Point the camera upstream!

Pointing the camera upstream generally gives you more of the river on the screen. The river is flowing down and towards you, therefore it is filling the lower part of the screen and providing the excitement of it coming closer to the eye, and the angler can read the water. 👏🐟

What's the best time to capture your time on the river? Depending on location, and if you’re a morning person, get up-and-at’em early! 📷 🌞

The golden hour is just as the morning sun is breaking the horizon for an hour or two, and before sunset it is repeated.

The blue hour is that cold light just before morning golden hour, or after evening golden hour - ideal for mysterious, misty/grey shots.

(1) Add Shadows: Avoid having everything in your shot at the same level of light, it will be fairly boring to look at! Instead introduce shadows by slightly changing the angle of your camera or your position to the sun.

(2) Add Layers: Adding layers can be a simple as having branches of a tree in the foreground or shooting over someone’s shoulder

(3) Add Focus: Combine different layers of focus in your focus in the foreground, mid and background of your shot.

The most important thing about river photography is composition. There are only a handful of times when having your subject 'slap-bang' in the middle of the frame is correct.

👉 That’s where the rule of thirds comes into play: Position your subjects slightly off-centre, ideally with one focus point on both the x and y axis.
