“I feel comfortable coming back to the space by myself and even exploring new spaces. I love being outdoors but struggle with confidence and to get myself out, this has really helped me to work on that and to feel more human. I feel actually connected to the place I live as opposed to how I’ve been past few years.”
When people feel overwhelmed by personal challenges, it is common to feel isolated and disconnected from their local community. We have just come to the end of a project funded through the The National Lottery Heritage Fund which allowed us to further incorporate local heritage into our participants journey with Venture Trust, aiming to better connect them to their local communities and the spaces available to them which can be beneficial for their mental health and wellbeing.
We worked with partners across Scotland to deliver the project such as Historic Environment Scotland, National Trust for Scotland and SAMH, and used local heritage assets such as the Newhailes Estate, Holyrood Park and Pittencrief Park to deliver specific groupwork and one-to-one sessions designed to allow participants to connect with what is sometimes, right on their doorstep!
The project influenced our work right across our personal development, employability and therapeutic services and had a very positive impact on the participants involved - with over 81% reporting a better connection to their local community and 100% saying they would feel more likely to visit the place again and other Scottish heritage sites.
Thanks to the The National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting Venture Trust, this programme and the potential of our brilliant participants. We look forward to further developing these links in the future!

We love to read stories from our Wilderness Journeys.
This is what our team had to say about their recent 10-day trip in the Scottish Highlands:
“We focussed on the all-important safe space, building relationships, explored male socialisation and the ‘Taboo on Tenderness’, and honed-in on how we can meet our basic needs. The group delved into discussions on wellbeing, before reflecting on triggers, the relative merits of “reaction” or “response” and how we can understand our behaviour. The group linked sessions from day-to-day and their openness and honesty was amazing to see.
As one participant put it in our self-reflection session: “I feel like we came here as broken men. And piece by piece we’ve been put back together each day. We’re all going away with more tools in our toolbox to deal with things back at home.”
They left with renewed energy, increased self-worth and direction towards their path of choice.”
Venture Trust continues to work with people returning from Wilderness Journeys to support them in their progress. Learn more about our work or make a referral on our website: https://www.venturetrust.org.uk/

Our Story
Venture Trust helps people going through difficult circumstances to make positive changes in their lives.
We run intensive personal development programmes using wilderness settings and activities, designed to support participants to build their confidence, learn new skills, spend time with others from similar backgrounds, and think about the future.
Delivering impact-driven criminal justice and employability programmes.
Venture Trust helps people recognise what they need to change; then gives them the confidence, motivation and life tools they need to make those changes. Our programmes give participants time and space in a wilderness setting, far away from the pressures of home, in which they are set physical, emotional and social challenges. These challenges, combined with long term support from our outreach workers, help participants to develop the skills they need to find a job, go back into education, increase their stability and develop more positive relationships with those around them.
