Stainless or High-Carbon Steel in Hand-made Knives — Green Man Knives How do you choose between high-carbon and stainless steel knives.
Just arrived at our cottage for the week in Kilninver 15 minutes south of Oban. This is the view down to Loch Feochan. Bliss
A travelling Santoku chef’s knife just forged, shaped and polished in the workshop today. This will have one of my hand-made leather belt sheathes to live in.
Some delicate work going on today in the workshop. I’m fitting together the third edition of my small penknife design - The Cutty Wren.
The word Cutty here is an old Scots/northern English word for short, as in the famous tall ship The Cutty Sark. It’s the smallest of my penknife designs with a total closed length of 85mm.
Two new handmade and hand-forged paring knives of my Classic Petty design are now for sale on my website fresh for 2023.
Happy New Year folks 🙏

This is my latest custom-made ’Warrener’ with a Damascus steel blade and African Blackwood handle. You can order your own, choose your own combination of blade material, handle material, sheath colour and detailing colour. I can also hand-stamp an inscription on the blade or you can choose from some common symbols such as yin-yang.
Everything is completely hand made by me at my workshop in Suffolk, England.
Hubble, bubble,
Toil and trouble….
A bit of bladesmiths’ alchemy going on in the workshop today. One of my Warrener design neck knives made in damascus steel is being etched in sulphuric acid to accentuate the pattern 🧙♂️⚔️
Getting the 18th century Grundisburgh Smithy at The Food Museum lit to forge some chefs knives today. Very welcome when it’s only 6 degrees C outside
Now the bellows are fixed got a nice charcoal forging fire going at The Grundisburgh Forge at The Food Museum yesterday.
Super-excited to be starting a new project. This is the old smithy from Grundisburgh and was re-erected at The Food Museum in Stowmarket. I’ll be firing it up as soon as I get it tidied up and the bellows fixed. It has plenty of work to produce to enable other areas of the museum to function, as well as period cutlery (and some Green Man Knives cutlery) that will be for sale in the museum shop.
My recently finished Carving Knife Set made in high-carbon blade steel with curly birch handle, nickel bolsters and oak protective sheathes. They are inscribed on the back of the blades with a dedication.
This was a specially commissioned set, not from my stock. To discuss your special commission send me an email.
This edition number 35 of my popular Bushman design is made with L3 (52100) high carbon steel with a distally tapered blade and tang.

Today I have been preparing some knives to go in the kiln for heat treatment.
Here I’m stamping in the unique serial number that identifies every knife that I make.
Starting to see glimmers of recovery from COVID now after 8 weeks.
So this morning the fires at Green Man Knives were lit and I remembered what my hammer feels like in my hand. Huzzah 😃⚒ To see some finished knives take a look at my website

It seems that folks have been confusing my business with Greenman Forge of Otley, Birmingham.
We are not linked in any way.
Thank you 👍🏻
This beautiful billet of Vinland pattern Damasteel arrived yesterday; now profiled into a Nakiri-shaped lump ready for some bladesmithing wizardry to render it most useful 😁
Some new knives back in stock now and available on my website.
These are my Sloyd knives for green woodworking, wood carving and whittling. They are available in two sizes and in either RWL34 stainless steel or L3 (52100) high carbon steel and have a wooden slip sheath to keep them, and you, safe when they’re not in use.

Not as hot as some parts here in UK but don’t think I’ll light the forge today 😅
