Magic of the cup 🏆

Reserves get the win, great game for the neutral and both sides battled hard but reserves get the win against opponents from league above 💥⚽️💙

30/10/2023

No game for either Wyvern side this weekend

However a chance to reflect back on our matches last time out!!

Firsts were up against highly rated opposition Mariners in county cup action, despite playing the better football for large parts of the game Mariners came out 2-1 winners

MOTM - Ashton Norie

Reserves faced Northwalls at home and came into the game after a difficult few matches and results but worked hard and through some difficult spells to get the win.

Gary Shier showed his quality tearing up the away team throughout the game creating chances for the side and this is how the deadlock was broken with Jack Shier timing his run perfectly and smashing home to add to his impressive tally

Gary Mckiernan took 2mins to make it 2-0 following his introduction to the side following great pressing work. The changes continued to flow but Gary Shier continued to dominate the left flank and finally found his O button and smashed a ferocious effort from down town into the top stanch for 3-0

North did battle back into the side and after a contentious penalty and good team goal it was 3-2

Wyvern changed formation and instantly was rewarded with great football flowing and Gary Shier again in the right place to fire home and restore two goal cushion, Mckiernan now flowing and dancing past defenders also added his second to make it 5-2 and ensure victory

MOTM - Gary Mckiernan

Both sides in cup action this week 💙⚽️

Panthers turned into P***y cats 💙

A beautiful Sunday morning at Fort Wyvern with the sun beating down over a majestic dewy pitch was the scene for Wyvern firsts to finally get their season underway

And boy did they do that….

A slight change in formation to wash away the blues from the first two games of the season was what doctor Sydenham ordered

A ferocious start from Wyvern saw Jamie Girton unlock the Panthers after just 5 minutes with the assist from Lewis Ahmet

5 minutes later though and Panthers had their first venture into the hosts box and unbelievably won a penalty that was slotted home to make it 1-1

The Panthers offside flag looked like it was being hung out to dry in the now quite hot sun ☀️ and when Nick Izzard seemingly put Wyvern into the lead there it was again to rule the goal out, and like the drama of VAR The week before the visitors went up the other end and scored!! Unbelievable…. Could it be happening again?

Just before the stroke of half time Lewis Ahmet made it 2-2 when Jamie Girton returned the favour before Aaron Merry found the net only for the offside flag to be at it again! The game heating up and an altercation on the sidelines saw Wyvern Physio Alec Jones nearly see red 👀

A good first half from Wyvern and something to build on for sure.. and that happened just after the break when Jamie Girton scored again assisted by Nick Izzard who was now everywhere in the number 10 role

Aaron Merry made it 4-2 again assist from Izzard before Girton completed his hatrick with a beautifully weighted through ball from captain fantastic Cozens… 5-2, Panthers still a threat going forward and Smithy in goal now bandaged up was on fire 🔥

Quick fire goals all assisted by the leagues best number 10 Nick ‘KDB’ Izzard… from Chai Pearce, Lewis Ahmet and Jamie Girton adding his 4th of the day saw Wyvern clinch the victory 8-2 a true testimony to the hunger and attitude the lads turned up with on the day…… UTW

Wyvern travelled with a strong squad despite missing a couple key players, rotation continued to take place. The sun was out in full force making it a beautiful morning to play, Miller won toss and decided to go uphill first half and get the hard bit out the way.

Wyvern found themselves defending for large parts of the game as expected but Titans were 100% up for the occasion and determined to cause upset, they had several early chances but were unable to alter the scoreline.

Wyvern had not played anywhere near previous weeks and struggled to break Titans down, with the half ticking down a moment of brilliance opened the Titans up, Cleverly played the ball to Miller who has clearly been watching the Beckham documentary as he whipped an outrageous ball around the Titans defence for Horler to thunder a header home 0-1

This gave Wyvern life and just as everyone thought the half was over Maddocks decided he had other plans, Miller played the ball to Maddocks who danced round several defender before chipping the keeper with an audacious finish 0-2

Out of nowhere Wyvern had a 2-0 lead and it wasn’t deserved, with the second half down hill confidence of a result was high but Titans had other plans.

Credit where it’s due the Titans side worked harder and wanted it more than us this weekend and punished us 4 times in the second half meaning we faced defeat for the first time.

Next week we face title favourites Black Swan and the boys know a response is expected 💙⚽️

Wyvern 6-0 Carrs Crusaders

Wyvern Reserves hit Carrs for SIX to keep cup dream alive!!

Who doesn’t love a cup run? Massive underdogs in the competition but Wyvern win again to keep the impressive run continuing.

CB - Jason HarrIs
CB - Paul Shier
CB - Danny Skyner
LWB - Khabib

CM - Terry Gibbs

Squad rotation continued and with the ressys missing some key players the boys knew they had a big morning ahead to beat well respected side Carrs Crusaders following our previous tough games.

The match started at blistering pace with Carrs cutting through a half asleep Wyvern only to be denied by an outstanding save from Bowden. The early wake up call Wyvern needed and we began to grow into the game with short sharp passing across the team.

With Gibbs dominating the arial battle in midfield and Hart/Dehaan combo slicing through the Carrs team the momentum began to swing in our favour.

Miller started to receive the ball in pockets and drive at the away side and it was one of these runs that resulted in the first goal, Miller hauled down outside the box and he dusted himself off stepped up and struck and unstoppable drive into the bottom left corner 1-0

Wyvern sensed panic in the Carrs defence as the pressure kept coming, a great cross into the box was handled by the away defender leaving J.Shier to smash home an unstoppable penalty for his 6th of the campaign 2-0

Wyvern continued dominating and Horler was soon into the mix offering flair in the middle of the park but it was a quick thinking set piece from the corner that found Hart back stick who cushioned an audacious header back across goal into the top right stanch 3-0

Wyverns football was flowing with Harris, Skyner & P.Shier looking confident and zipping the ball about and great supporting runs from Khabib / Ransom we looked dangerous on every attack. Another great run at the away side resulted in another freekick near the edge of the box and Miller had no problems dispatching another low drive past the keeper for his second of the game. 4-0

HT - Big Ange was impressed declaring it the best performance of the season so far, the changes will keep coming and the intensity is to remain

Mckiernan started to grow into the match and was creating a few chances following good link up play with Hutchings & J.Shier, whilst Cleverly looked at home in the back 3.

A couple chances came and went for both sides with Bowden making a few more top level saves and a couple clearances Wyvern stayed strong to deny the opposition.

Manager JD (Big Ange) decided enough was enough he had watched the boys in cruise control but wanted more goals and knowing that they only come when Ransom & Miller are on the pitch he deployed the deadly duo once more. He was quickly rewarded as a great Ransom run found J.Shier who lay the ball off to Miller who smashed home to complete his hatty 5-0

JD slotted into the side as the boys continued to whip it around like prime Barca 08, the fun didn’t stop for the boys in Claret and Blue as it was soon 6!! Gibbs decided to play an outrageous reverse lob through ball to Miller who timed his run perfect to dispatch for his 4th of the afternoon and complete an incredible victory for the reserves ⚽️💥💙

Two games ago we played in blistering sunshine and heatwaves, today we arrived to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms… beautiful England hey?

The weather wasn’t going to dampen spirits with the boys confident and excited for the challenge ahead, both teams come into the game unbeaten sitting 1st & 2nd

The game started at a fast pace as expected with the pitch zipping and tackles flying in, Carrs dominated the first 15-20 mins and Wyvern showed great defensive resilience with Bowden making some incredible catches and saves.

The defence continued to be under pressure but some goal line clearances and big tackles kept Carrs out. Wyvern slowly began to grow into the game with the midfield starting to dominate the strikers started to come into the match, J Shier had a couple half chances whistle just over and Miller denied by a couple good saves from the keeper but the signs were promising as Wyvern began to create.

Ransom & Horler who provided excellent cover at the back also began to create and threaten going forward and Wyvern started to become the better side.

The deadlock was broken by a moment of brilliance as Maddocks shifted past the Carrs midfield effortlessly before playing a killer chipped through ball to J Shier whose touch was exquisite and finish stunning on the angle. Wyvern take the lead 0-1

Second half began with Wyvern remaining confident but Carrs searching for an equaliser only to find the same outcome a rock solid defence and keeper in red hot form!!

Wyvern midfield rotation kept us fresh with all the players pressing and battling constantly and this really began to open Carrs up. Ransom made a gut busting run into the box and was hauled to the ground leaving the ref to point to the spot. Gibbs a man who doesn’t shy away from big pressure occasions stepped up and struck it well but was denied by the home team keeper.

Wyvern did not let this get to them, in fact it pushed us to battle more and make sure it wasn’t costly and we began to play our best football and Maddocks went close first with a thunderbolt from range the keeper stopped superbly.

The boys didn’t have to wait to long before the lead was doubled, Miller whipped in a corner that found Gibbs who held up superbly and set Maddocks on the edge who delivered another trademark R1 O right into the top bins sparking wild scenes from the sidelines and players alike.

Carrs sensing the game slipping away began to push more and more but Wyvern stayed strong and continued to punish creating some great chances from incredible build up play and with the clock ticking down hammered the final nail in the coffin with a slick move, Maddocks found Millers feet who held up well before finding Dehaan who produced an outrageous one two no look trivela pass putting Miller clean in who calmly slotted completing an incredible result and performance for the boys 💙⚽️🫡

Weekend complete, Ressys stay top 🥰

Ressy MOTM - Tommy Maddocks

Firstly what a game, what a team performance and what a result!!

Special mention to Calum Bowden who handled incredibly today in tough conditions, enjoy your clean sheets tonight sir 🫡

Ollie Ransom also outstanding covering 90% of the grass today with blistering pace

But only one man could win the award and it was unanimous Tommy Maddock has been outstanding since his move to cm but today was exceptional, dominated the middle of the pitch and scored an outrageous R1 O to put the boys 2-0 up ⚽️💙🤩

Westcott 1-5 Wyvern Res

The Ressy tour of somerset continued this weekend as the boys travelled to play new side Westcott, the 5* away facilities were a pleasant surprise and already had the lads excited for the shower to follow.

A strong 16 man squad selected but due to injury to star man Mark Blight only 15 travelled and we wish Blighty a speedy recovery.

Squad
Player/Manager – James Dungworth

GK – Cal Bowden
RWB – Ollie Ransom
CB – James Dungworth
CB – Danny Skyner
CB – Paul Shier ©
LWB – Josh Horler
CM – Jay Dehaan
CM – Tommy Maddocks
CM – Shaun Hart
ST – Jack Shier
ST – Gary Mckiernan

Subs
Jake Miller, Ryan Cleverly, Terry Gibbs & Jason Harris

The sides on paper couldn’t of looked any different and even a few Westcott players were licking their lips thinking this will be an easy afternoon but games aren’t played on paper and it was Wyvern who burst into an early lead, some good link up play between the strikers released Jack Shier who sent the keeper the wrong way with an insane use of the defender to show case this man’s high football IQ 0-1

Westcott grew into the game and started to have large spells of possession and finally broke the defensive line to score and level the game 1-1, Westcott knocking again and with Wyvern down to 10 temporarily it was hard but some brilliant tracking and covering all over the pitch kept them frustrated.

Wyvern were creating chances themselves but unable to provide the finish despite some insane build up play and touches it was just the goal lacking on a few occasions, Wyvern now back to 11 and back in front, J.Shier again the man to provide it this time showcasing more IQ knowing the keeper would expect a ferocious low shot he decided to out smart him and scuff one down the middle leaving the keeper helpless and wondering if he was facing Erling in disguise. 1-2

Goal of the game and early contender for goal of the season, up step Tommy Maddocks, Wyvern ressy poster boy. A great run combined with strength and skill from J.Shier could have resulted in a penalty but the advantage was played as the ball fell to Maddocks on the edge who stuck a first class stamp on the ball and whipped in top left stanch. 1-3

HT – changes made, Hard half to come going up the slope but the message was simple to keep battling on and work hard for each other.

A few more chances came and went with Mckiernan being denied by some great saves, but he wasn’t to blank all game that just doesn’t happen, a high press from Miller & Dehaan put the defence and keeper under pressure and his kick went straight to Mckiernan who this time slotted with ease 1-4

The final goal of the game came from the spot, Penalty won and dispatched by Erling Shier 1-5

A test we was excited for, a promising young side who will do well this season but today we stepped and performed, next week are on the road again when we face early title favourites Carrs Crusaders.

HSG 1-6 Wyvern Reserves

The first official game of the reserve era took place today and it provided everything you could of wanted and ended with 16 happy players and some excited supporters as we went back for a drink with the home side who were a fantastic group on and off the pitch 💙☀️

Squad
Manager - James Dungworth

GK - Cal Bowden
RWB - Josh Horler
CB - Jason HarrIs
CB - Paul Shier (C)
CB - Danny Skyner
LWB - Danny Hutchibgs
CM - Jay Dehaan
CM - Terry Gibbs
CAM - Tommy Maddocks
ST - Gary Mckiernan
ST - Mark Blight

Subs
Jake Miller, Jack Shier, Ryan Cleverly, Art Mcalonan & Shaun Hart

Well with summer finally arriving on opening day of the season we started playing up the slope in blistering hot conditions but it was HSG who started the fastest with a real hunger in the early tackles and they took a 1-0 lead when there striker took a chance from range and was rewarded with a fine goal. 🫣

Wyvern did spark into life eventually and started to grow back into the game, they found the leveller after great work from Dehaan released Gibbs who took his opportunity well and slotted home with his feet…. Yes I said it his feet 🙊 1-1

The game took a turn when both Wyverns strikers took knocks and both had to come off for J.Shier & Miller but Shier provided an instant impact after a breathtaking run from Gibbs seen him hauled to the ground and he passed the ball to Shier who unleashed an unstoppable pen 1-2 ⚽️

HT - the changes continued to take place with all the subs featuring and legs being freshened up in the heat, the hard half done and the message was simple keep it simple and work for each other

Mckiernan was introduced back into the side and following an outrageous reverse pass from Hart he was set free and dispatched with ease 1-3 😎

It was soon 4 with Wyvern now creating plenty of chances but it was another set piece that added to the scoreline, a free kick on the edge of the box with Miller stood over it was only going to end one way, A lovely bit of whippage and the ball nestled into the far corner with claims of prime Beckham ringing around Hinton St George. 🫡

The 5th goal was easily the move of the game, Blight back on the pitch finished it but it started with great flowing football which resulted in Horler sending in a cross that Blight headed into the top corner 1-5 🤩

The game continued to offer chances to Wyvern but a few wrong choices mixed with good saves kept the score 1-5 until the last kick of the game, Gibbs met a corner with a towering powerful header that smashed in top corner simply unstoppable 🥳

With that the whistle blew, we learned a lot, we dug deep, we enjoyed ourselves and ultimately we stuck 3 points on the board. Now the focus turns to two more tough away days 💙💙

03/09/2023

Wyvern 1st - Match report

A tough first game in the cup for Wyvern started with the visitors (Panthers) winning the toss and making the home kick towards the famous KOP

A scrappy start from both teams, however panthers finally got the cut through after 11 minutes with an own goal, only for Aaron Merry to head the hosts level from a great cross by Chris McDougall

Panthers scrapped to then go 2-1 up after 25 minutes… again, only for Aaron Merry to square things up moments later from a corner taken by Jamie Girton

2-2 at the break and the hosts looking far from the pre season side we’ve seen so far

Just 5 minutes into the second half and Wyvern eventually took the lead and made it 3-2 with sub Lewis Ahmet scoring the rebound of what looked a certain Aaron Merry hat-rick

It was panthers time to equalise with a little help from the man in black to make it 3-3 before another just before time to make it 4-3 to panthers

The Wyvern spirit eventually came to fruition 3 minutes from time when Jamie Girton grabbed a last minute equaliser from a Gary shier free kick to send the game straight to penalties

3-3 after the first 5 spot kicks meant sudden death…. After 5 more faultless penalties eventually Wyvern missed and sent panthers through to the next round

Good luck Panthers 🐆

Wyvern 1st MOTM - Aaron Merry

2 well taken headers to keep wyvern in the game. A line bursting run to assist Lewis with the 3rd goal. Didn’t stop running all game

We go again next week 💙⚽️
