Good Evening All 😊

Here’s something you might not know!

Myth: A cataract must be ‘ripe’ before it can be removed.
Fact: A cataract can be removed as soon as your vision is compromised. Thanks to modern advances in cataract surgery, lenses cloudy enough to make reading difficult can now be easily removed!

Happy Monday! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🙏🏻

What is central serous retinopathy? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Central serous retinopathy (CSR), also known as central serous chorio-retinopathy (CSCR), is a retinal disorder that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp and detailed vision. It occurs when fluid accumulates underneath the macula, leading to temporary vision blurring and distortion. CSR mainly impacts people aged 20 to 50, and it tends to affect men more than women. It is a relatively common eye condition. It is often associated with using steroid medications, poor sleep or high levels of stress. It is usually self limiting but can recur and sometimes can permanently damage the central vision, but it is treatable.

Earlier this month… a patient had problems with her vision, in particular night vision and missing things around her, she also had lots of floaters. She was found to have Birdshot chorioretinopathy which is an unusual inflammatory condition affecting the retina and can be seen on these photos with pale white/cream splodges scattered throughout the retina. 👁️
Birdshot often starts with floaters and/or blurred vision. These are also symptoms of a number of other conditions as well which can make birdshot difficult to diagnose early on.
People with birdshot may go on to experience other symptoms including:
- Night blindness
Problems with colour vision
- Sensitivity to bright lights
- Seeing flashing lights
- Distortions in vision
- Pain in the eyes
- Loss of depth perception and/or peripheral (side) vision

✨ We hope you had a lovely weekend! ✨

Wet Macular Degeneration is a condition affecting the older age group which can result in a rapid loss of central vision due to abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina which can bleed, leak and cause scar tissue to form, destroying vision.

If identified quickly, it can be treated with injections of medications, such as Vabysmo, the latest medication which can result in huge improvements in the structure of the retina, and improve the vision also.

Patients can need injections every 16 weeks in the majority of cases…

Good Evening!

Here’s an interesting case for you all. The first image shows a patient with a Retinal Detachment; rapid vision deterioration can occur when the retina falls, or is pulled away from the blood vessels which provide it with oxygen and nutrients. Common symptoms include flashes of lights and new floating objects in vision.

Thankfully, we offer retinal detachment surgery at TWEC with our vitreoretinal surgeon, Mr Syed. 👨‍⚕️

Understanding Myopia ✨

Short-sightedness in the UK has risen by 46% over the past thirty years.

This significant increase in short-sightedness in the UK over the past three decades raises concerns about the impact of modern lifestyle habits on vision health. Factors such as excessive screen time, limited outdoor activities, and genetic predisposition may contribute to this rise. It is essential for individuals to be mindful of their eye health and take proactive steps to protect their vision, such as practicing good screen habits, taking regular breaks from screens, ensuring proper lighting, and scheduling regular eye exams.

By being proactive and making small adjustments to daily routines, it is possible to mitigate the effects of short-sightedness and prioritize long-term eye health.

Earlier this week… Pictures from the Toric Intraocular Lens Masterclass… teaching by Mr Damian Lake 💙

- Who would benefit from this course?

• The topic is aimed at all clinicians, as it is a common condition that is often poorly recognised at the mild end of the spectrum, and poorly treated at the more severe end of the spectrum.

Ocular allergy is not a condition to be taken lightly; it causes people distress and affects their quality of life.

If you are interested in attending the next session, please DM us to join the waiting list! 💯

Life Saving Surgery ✅💙

This lady had blurred vision and was found to have swollen blood vessels around the optic nerve, there were also some bleeds found in the retina. We advised this lady to get some blood tests as sometimes conditions such as anaemia can cause this appearance.

She was found to be very anaemic and this was investigated and a tumour was found and now has been removed.

Happy Saturday!

In the first image, this patient had a full thickness macular hole in the right eye. This will cause reduced central vision, due to a hole appearing in the macula (the part of the eye responsible for detailed vision) sometimes as a consequence of the jelly in the eye, the vitreous, pulling on the macula.

This can be repaired with an operation, which we carry out at TWEC! 👁️ 💙

Good Afternoon All! 👀

This young man had a cotton wool spot in the right eye. This is an area of damage to the circulation of the nerve fibres that cover the retina and can be the sign of early circulatory problems such as blood pressure or diabetes affecting the eye.

Usually they are self limiting but often indicate that the patient needs a check up with their GP!

On November 10, World Keratoconus Day is celebrated, a global campaign to increase awareness and education about this condition. Every year on November 10 we come together to raise awareness among the public, researchers, health professionals and policy makers about the impact keratoconus has on the lives of those affected, and their family and friends.

Imagine seeing the world through a distorted lens that makes everything blurry, hazy, and distorted. This is what many people with keratoconus experience every day. Keratoconus is an uncommon eye disease that alters the shape of the cornea, the clear window of the eye. It causes the cornea to thin and protrude into a cone-like shape that bends light rays and affects vision. Keratoconus can have a significant impact on one’s daily activities, emotional well-being, and social interactions.

Nutrition plays an important role in maintaining eye health. Foods rich in nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Some examples of such foods include leafy greens, fish, nuts, citrus fruits, and carrots.

Lyme disease is transmitted by a bite from Ticks found on deer. 🌳

Walking in the forests in the Weald of Kent or Surrey or Sussex may expose you to Tick bites. 🚶

As well as the characteristic rash shown , eye symptoms include floaters, blurred vision, double vision and flashing lights in the field of vision.

If these symptoms develop, a check up at Tunbridge Wells Eye Centre maybe worthwhile!

Watch out for any brown or black areas on your eyes! 👁️

Although rare, they can turn into melanoma and potentially be not just vision threatening but life threatening.

Any brown or black area or any area changing in appearance should get checked by an Ophthalmologist. 📝
