This next week I’ll be diving into pattern books, beautiful fabrics, textures with multiple colour ways on a mission to curate a scheme that enlightens my clients personality in their new home!

Knowing what to ask clients and getting to the heart of what they really need is the key to any successful design.

On this project my client needs focus on the function of each room, considering; noise, lighting and practical separate spaces. The outcome being that each member of the family can feel comfortable within each room.
(I’ll report on these points as I progress through the project via stories, in time… )

Zellige tiles 🧑‍🎨

I’ve got a thing for colourful zellige tiles! Especially tonal collections! I could stare at the depth of colour all day! In fact swimming pools can look mesmerising in zellige tiles. When the sun light and water ripples distort the shapes, the colours all run into each other and It reminds me of staring into the depths of a seabed (see picture 3)

When designing this outdoor table, I chose my favourite emerald green zellige tiles. Each tile is glazed and fired, resulting in a surface with various irregularities, ranging in different depths of green.

This checkerboard pattern with a bold green border keeps the table looking contemporary. The garden could do with a statement piece.

There’s so much work involved as every individual tile needs to be chipped down to size.
The artisan yard is sprinkled with natural clay and multicoloured enamel glaze chippings from all the years of hand craft!

👩‍🎨The decor is made by local artisans!

It’s such a treat to have such talented and creative artisans on our doorstep! And what better way to keep traditions alive and bring character and beauty into the property!

The bedside tables - have been carved by hand and have a raw feel to them, rustic but chic!

The lampshades - were sourced from Marrakech. They were made by specialist artisans working with brass sheets, hand beaten into shape and laser cut to perfection.

The rugs - 100% wool and hand woven and cut by the ladies in the countryside here.

The long bolster cushion - is an Indian bloc printed fabric, found in a little boutique in the souk. The border pattern was the perfect size to run it through the sewing machine and make a bolster cushion from it.
The gold leaf Mandala mural and the gold threads on the cushion, glisten in unison as the sun sets ✨

Breathe out 😌…

with calm vibes, airy spaces and light colours, not to detract from the high wooden beams that bring so much character into this space.

The patterned tiles help anchor the composition and draw your eyes downwards grounding the space.

Wood/granite/wicker and stone are natural elements we have combined to make an earthy textured scheme.

✨Styling with thought✨

This table set is designed to connect to the rusic aesthetic inside this home. We want the guest to feel thought about and have a warm welcome as they enter the space!

🌳Hand picked olive branches connect the outside in, rather nice In front of the big window overlooking the olive tree garden.

🕯️lighting an oil burner is great for first impressions, setting the scent. It is one of the first things that is recognised by our bodies when we enter a space! (Orange blossom oil is our favourite!)

🔖Hand written name tags on the napkins add a personal touch and make the guests feel thought about.

Villa Zitoun 🫒- Morocco

I love taking on guest house design projects because I like to really study and understand the guests needs. Really imagine how they might use the space and think about how they want to feel in it.

Curating a balance between character and function, whilst appealing to a wide range of tastes is the desired outcome for this project.

The villa is made from its surrounding natural materials such as the stone walls and the ‘Beldi’ wood beam infrastructure (tough wood found only in the Moroccan countryside).

Complimenting the earthy, organic vibes in the decor and presentation of the villa was a must. I wanted to elevate this neutral colour pallet.
I wanted to navigate a juxtaposition between all the different African patterns; the tiles, the hanging plates and the Bogolon textiles. By doing this we escaped bland! And elevated the living room to a more jazzy vibe.

Sunday means Jutier rummaging! 👗👕⚱️

As I cast my eye across the colourful bundles in front of me, I see bright fuchsia and tangerine silks, the deepest of navy blues and purple velvets. I lean in and get fixated on the colours and details in the embroidery patterns I see on the sleeves, hems and pockets of the djallabas.

In this moment, everything looks stunning, beading and diamonte twinkle at me as they catch the sunlight. I feel happy, really happy. There's nothing like the feeling of being inspired! . Ideas flood in and I can't look through the fabrics fast enough!

I'm excited about my growing collection of Moroccan vibrant fabrics, crochet tape, embroidery finishes, vintage fabrics and so much more. ... Imagine bowls full of beautiful coloured fabrics and beads ready to rummage through and amalgamate into a personalised vision board. Does walking the souks together and getting inspired sound fun?

I went to my favourite shop in the medina today, actually its a cute little hut

The textiles are hung from floor the ceiling in here, no walls to be seen! It's abundant with vintage fabrics and fluffy rugs, ones you just have to reach out and touch.

The small blemishes and tiny areas of wear on these vintage fabrics I love because each one has it's own character, telling a unique story.

My other favourite shop owned by Mastifa has an array of colourful beads, tribal necklaces, silver vintage jewelry and some wonderful oversized hamsa hands!

Mastifa showed me a book of photographs taken of Amazigh tribes making their hand made crafts which have been passed on from. He be ration to generation. He sells the long lengths of colourful woven belts in the picture of this page in the book featured.

"This house has white walls and no soul" said my client.

I've always had a strong interest behind what we, as individuals, are drawn to in environments. Seeking the essence to ones needs, aesthetics and fulfillments. It is essential to my design work, otherwise it's meaningless design, right?.

What makes your home special to you?

I love to work with pattern on pattern; making ones eyes soak in the juxtaposition of what's going on. I like using this technique in schemes when i'm seeking excitement and playfulness. This kitchen dinning room (as featured) is an example of playing with cool and warm tones, pattern with pattern and bringing abstract and geometric artwork together in one space.

Heirlooms enhance the energetic and emotional personal value to the whole house design, connecting meaning to each room. It's a real honour to be trusted with my clients precious possessions that have so much sentimental value. With these treasures I can study and enhance the design from a holistic perspective. They are like the clues to the missing parts of a puzzle. My clients personal style is developed with my guided vision. It's a fun and joyful process . Everything is signed off at each stage for natural progression, working in unison with each other.

This home is now playful. It is full of character and my client was thrilled with the outcome.

✨ A body of creative work ✨

I guess I could sum up this retreat as a body of creative work, combining my fondest experiences. I have travelled here, to Essaouira for the last eight years.

This place is special. Often described as a spiritual portal or the Brighton of Morocco! 😆.

Theres something really special about being surrounded by the local artisans of a morning, whilst they set up their shops, busy, believing in their handmade creations.
I have a similar relationship with the waves that greet me on the sea shore. Whether they ripple up into the sand or crash down in full force, they are always here in their full beauty.

The community of wonderful people keep me coming back...

My best friend Azeddine has a wonderful rug shop and we go on buying trips together around rural Morocco.

I cook tagine and incredible flavoursome traditional moroccan foods with Amine, in his home. I have an insiders perspective of what Moroccan houses/riads/apartments look like inside and how they support each other. Everything is deceivingly modest on the outside of these buildings!

Hassan, my Senegalese friend has opened a shop making african waxed fabric clothes - a post for another time!.

I eat Msimen with honey and amlo 😍 (a type of moroccan bread) in the square at sunset most days, accompanied with green tea. I love to watch the birds swoop around and the tide rush in. The orange sun melts down into the sea and everything becomes very quiet and peaceful.
