In London, 26-year-old Venetia Stanley – aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless – is having a love affair with the Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state. As Asquith reluctantly leads the country into war with Germany, a young intelligence officer is assigned to investigate a leak of top secret documents – and suddenly what was a sexual intrigue becomes a matter of national security that will alter the course of political history. Seamlessly weaving fact and fiction in a way that no writer does better, Precipice is the thrilling new novel from Robert Harris.

1461. Through blood and battle Edward has gained England’s throne – king by right and conquest – eighteen years old and unstoppable. Cecily has piloted his rise to power and stands at his shoulder now, first to claim the title King’s Mother.

But to win a throne is not to keep it and war is come again. As brother betrays brother, and trusted cousins turn treacherous, other mothers rise up to fight for other sons. Cecily must focus her will to defeat every challenge. Wherever they come from. Whatever the cost.

For there can be only one King, and only one King’s Mother.

Warwick, 1468. One drowsy summer afternoon, Sir Thomas Malory - politician, courtier, outlaw, renowned author of Le Morte D'Arthur - is seized from his garden and dragged to Newgate Prison for reasons unknown.

Shivering in his foul-smelling, filthy old cell, Malory mourns his misspent life as he awaits the ex*****on bell. But when the locking bar lifts, he is greeted by a boy of about twelve winters: the gaoler's son. Giddy with relief, Malory seizes the opportunity to recount his deeds to an audience.

So begins a prison confession of a perilously exciting life full of sieges, battles and court intrigue. A Good Deliverance is the captivating tale of a man at odds with his past and the events that inspired him to write the first great work of prose fiction in English.

From the author of the Kingmaker series, an epic and intimate tale of adventure, myth and the creation of one of literature's greatest stories. Join us, On the 16th of July!
