Karen Kenny Tutoring Services
Private KS1 & KS2 tutor with first-hand sen experience I offer face-to-face tuition in KS1 & KS2 English, reading and maths at my home in Whitstable.
I tailor lessons to child's needs, interests and work at their pace. I have first-hand sen experience. I was a former primary teaching assistant and have a level 3 diploma in support teaching, as well as a BA Honours English degree. Prior to this, I was a business journalist in London for more than 10 years. I am DBS registered.
It's great seeing my students grow in confidence and skills. I'm so proud of all of them. This particular student joined me last autumn. Well done.
My students chose the games they wanted to play for their last session before the summer holidays. They have all worked so hard and it was great to see how much their confidence has grown.
Reading, writing and crafting around special interests.
My math students have been decomposing numbers. They enjoyed crunching up pieces of paper with a single digit on it, selecting it at random from a box I was shaking and then made a 3 or 4-digit number to decompose.
Another fun week of arts & crafts, sensory play and puzzles.
We kept cool this week with some times table indoor bowling, phonics crafting, as well as recapping different ways to represent numbers.
It's been a busy few weeks, so here's just a quick look at some of the things my students have been working on.
I made this fun game to help my students practise their times tables.
My year 4's have been working hard in readiness for the school times table check.
I had a go at dying some rice this week ready for some fun, sensory phonics learning after half term!
My readers had fun swatting sight words after their reading intervention and comprehension quiz.
This week, my phonics students had fun playing with modelling clay and sorting items into the correct ai and ay spelling hoops, while my maths students practised their time table facts.
Some of my students have been using tens frames, cubes, base ten blocks and whole-part models to compare numbers and spot patterns in order to improve their mental maths.
As it was someone's birthday, we played a few party phonics games and used small chocolate coloured sweets for sound buttons, instead of counters. Yum!
I hope you all enjoyed the Easter half term. It's been a busy first week back. Here are just a few photos of what we've been up to.
My different year-group students had great fun this week hunting for Easter eggs, solving the problems hidden inside and even got to enjoy a delicious chocolate prize at the end!
These last few weeks, I've been busy making some fun resources around a specific interest. My student has certainly enjoyed these lessons and is racing through them!
Memorising spellings doesn't work for everyone and can be boring, which is why I like using letter tiles and card games. They are not only visual and tactile, but great fun. Hangman is also another great game for learning spellings.
Found these great Sentence a Day worksheets on Twinkl with visual images and word banks to help fire the imagination and expand vocabulary. We also used Language Through Colour prompts to highlight word classes.
Who doesn't like a feely bag?
I use mine for all sorts of maths and spelling games.
What's great is that my students seem to enjoy them just as much!
For those of you who don't know me, I'm always reading new SEN articles and watching webinars, so I can further support my students and adapt accordingly. This book is making for some interesting reading!
I hope the publishing company and authors don't mind a bit of free advertising!
Roll on Place Value is a great visual dice game for understanding the numerical system, as well as decomposing numbers. We took the game a step further and recapped rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.

Can you guess the number of objects in jar A, B and C?
This is a great game for developing problem solving & reasoning. It certainly got my students talking!
Anyone for curling?
My students had great fun getting to grips with factors.
They really did sweep the floor with me! 😀
This is a great little game to practise sight words with KS1 students. You can print out the game at Twinkl. I just made my own fishing rod and added real shells to make it a bit more tactile.
Alphabet lego is a fun way to help children learn the alphabet, practice their phonics and spellings. A great all-rounder!
My students built lego walls and towers.
An introduction to Venn diagrams using hula hoops!
Today's students sorted multiples of 6's and 7's into the correct circles. They were also quick to spot cards that were not in the 6 or 7 times tables!
I currently have some availability, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. facebook.com/karenkennytutoringservices
I love making resources for my students! This is my version of pass the Christmas pudding. It's basically times table catch and helps with quick recall of the times tables - especially when you tell the children they have to pass it quickly because it's a 'hot' Christmas pud!
This game also works well for learning spellings.
