Whitwell FC Juniors
Whitwell FC is a FA Charter Standard Junior Football Club with 1 age group, U12’s
Yesterday we hosted Sheffield Steelers in a game that had everything. Dogs on the pitch, every season of weather and goals galore.
Steelers started the game well and looked comfortable passing the ball about with little 1-2’s to use the ball to good effect, and true to fashion playing downhill in the first half, it took us time to settle. With the Steelers keeper in good form it took until late into the first half to register our first goal. 2 more then followed in quick succession to take us into a 3-0 halftime lead.
At halftime the team were so keen to get back out there that we only had chance to warn about the Steelers No.12 picking up space in the pocket behind our central midfield, then the Oranges and Jaffa’s were snaffled in double quick time 😋😋 and we’re off again.
Playing in our preferred uphill direction in the second half it was full steam ahead. We went from strength to strength maintaining the high energy levels ending the game with 6 more goals.
We couldn’t have asked for a better result to take us into this coming Sunday’s top of the table clash against Bramley. Fingers crossed we have no more injuries or illness 🤞🏻🙏😁
Final score 9-1
Goal scorers: Jack 3, Reuben 3, Conor 1, Dylan 1, Henry 1
Our 2 PotM winners were Jack and Eden. Jack took onboard what was asked of him for the game. He battled well to win the ball back and intercept well. He linked up well in the final 3rd and got his rewards with a great hat trick. Eden is getting back to what we all know she can do. She was a physical presence at the back but took the time to control and distribute well without panicking. She also has a great throw on her. 🏆🏆

To all our supporters out there, we’re asking for your help to raise funds for the team.
One of our player’s stepdads (pictured) is taking on the task of running the Leeds Marathon this coming May to help us raise much needed funds for equipment, grounds maintenance and kit.
Jean-Louis is a keen runner and can regularly be seen in his running gear at our home games and training sessions, as he sets off around the villages to keep up his training.
Jean recently approached us to offer to raise as much money as he could to go towards the team as he is an avid fan. We jumped at the chance and so this post is to spread the word in the hope that both us and all our fantastic supporters may help in contributing via Jean’s Just Giving page, attached to this post.
You will see from the Just Giving page that Jean will be posting updates on his preparation via his Strava page so we can all see the hard work that he puts in to get ready for the day.
Please, if anyone is able to donate towards this just click on the link below which will take you to the just giving page. Jean, us coaches and all our players would be extremely grateful for any donations.
We would like to wish Jean good luck for the Marathon and all his preparations 🏃♂️🙌🏻

A slightly earlier kickoff time for this coming Sunday’s home game against Sheffield Steelers. We had a great turnout for last weeks away game at Worksop and we hope to see as many of you there as possible up at Sandy Lane on home turf.
WAWAW 🔵⚫️🟡⚫️⚽️
Yesterday’s away game saw us take the short trip up the A60 to play local opponents SJR Worksop. We knew that since the last time we played this team they had a few new players and it was evident with the way they played and the increase in physicality and determination.
The SJR pitch was in great condition and it gave us chance to try and play the passes to build the attacks. With SJR in good form and their keeper alert to any danger we had to dig in and really push to create the opportunities and score the goals. What made that a more achievable task was how well our defence played. I think that’s as good a defensive performance as we’ve had all season. For the majority we were able to push one of our fullbacks high up the pitch leaving us just 2 at the back. Add into that the energy in centre mid and link up play from our wingers, it was a solid display.
The momentum that the team are picking up is just at the right time as we will soon play both Bramley Sunnyside and Rawmarsh back to back in 2 top of the table clashes. Keeping those determination and energy levels in games and training will be key, and we hope the grassroots weather gods are kind to us throughout February.
Final score 7-0
Goal scorers: Reuben 4, Henry 2, Conor 1
PotM winners were Henry and Reuben. Henry took a fair few rough challenges and kicks but it didn’t stop him. If anything that fuels his determination. His assists and goals are a constant boost to the team and he has a never say die attitude. Reuben made sure he took his chances today to take him past the 50 goal mark, and even when he had hit the 50th he didn’t ease off keeping up those energy levels. He played some great balls across the face of goal, and turned assister to Conor with selfless play. 🏆🏆
Yesterday’s home encounter turned out to be a bit of a boggy one with most of the team coming away looking like they’d had a mud bath (especially Hunter!)
Playing with only 1 sub again the team had to keep their energy levels for the full 60 minutes, and they did that with some top football thrown in throughout the match. Abbey Lane proved to be a difficult opponent playing 4 at the back and add that to the boggy pitch we worked well to get the ball out wide and away from the congestion.
In a frantic first 5 minutes it was a bit ping pong as both sides struggled to put the passes together. Then came the first goal of the game with Callum firing from close range only for an Abbey Lane defender to turn it into his own net. The next goal was around the 20 minute mark as the game had started to settle. Conor with a well weighted through ball on the edge of the box for Reuben to round the keeper. Our 3rd started with a goal kick from Rufus out to Eden at left back, she then played a ball up the line for Cal to run onto and sprint away from the Abbey Lane defender and fire into the far bottom corner. 3-0 at halftime and feeling comfortable in the game.
Refuelled from the halftime Oranges and Jaffa cakes, it was only 2 minutes after the restart that we got our 4th goal. Henry laying off to Hunter at centre back, he controlled and step out from the back to play a pass through to Dylan for him to tuck it into the bottom corner. Our 5th was a hard low shot across the keeper into the far corner from Henry after driving to the edge of the 6yd box.
Abbey Lane didn’t sit back though and soon after scored the 6th of the game and their first to lift their spirits. Those lifted spirits looked to work as they then went on to score their 2nd to make it 5-2.
Back came Whitwell, determined not to let Abbey Lane back in it. Reuben grabbed our 6th after weaving in the box and scoring at the 2nd attempt after an initial block from the defender. Callum got our 7th at the back post as Henry’s strong right wing run, delivered into the box and after a bit of a ricochet stabbed home. Finishing off the scoring was Reuben hitting 2 more goals in the last 4 minutes to cap a very strong second half.
Final score 9-2.
Goal scorers: Reuben 4, Callum 2, Dylan 1, Henry 1, OG 1.
Our 2 PotM winners went to Callum and Caleb. Callum is flying this season in that left wing role. His pace has really increased and he breaks up play well to gets us on the attack. He’s found his rhythm with regular assists and goals as well as wicked corner taking. Caleb’s injury set him back a little from the start of the season but now he’s got his fitness back he’s showing that calm head at the back, a neat trick to beat his man and reads the game well. He’s also great at organising his back line. 🏆🏆
Get well soon to Callum. He managed to get a compound wrist fracture yesterday and will now be out for at least 6 weeks 🙈👎🏻 you will definitely be missed ⚽️
Looking at the weather forecast the pitch should just about soften up in time for our 3rd home fixture on the trot. This coming Sunday we look forward to hosting Abbey Lane. Although It’s due to be a tad windy (and that’s just the coaches in the dugout 💨🙈) we’re sure the game will be a cracker.
If you’ve ever wondered whether to come and cheer on the team, think no more. Get yourselves to Sandy Lane. It’s a very friendly atmosphere and our legendary snack hut has all your needs on a cold grassroots football morning 🥓☕️🍫 😋

Yesterday’s home game was a bit if a slow burner from us in the first half as it took us a good 10 minutes to get into the game. We had so many chances, and on another day could’ve easily been 5-1 up in the first half. It just wouldn’t go in, but credit to the team, they didn’t let their heads drop and kept playing the right way with energy and teamwork.
Stocksbridge were well up for the battle, proving to be the better of the 2 sides for the first 10-15 minutes and took the lead through a top bins free kick. We then started to get to grips with the game matching the battling efforts and coming in at halftime with a deserved goal to make it 1-1.
You could see at halftime that it had been a tough battle with a few red faces and heavy breathing. We were confident that if we could keep going and take the game to Stocksbridge from the kickoff, it wouldn’t be long before the goals started to flow.
In a goal fest of a second half we were treated to 8 more!
Our 2nd goal, just a couple of minutes after the restart, was a bit bizarre. The Stocksbridge keeper saving well on his line to then put the ball down on his 6yd line as if to take a goal kick. Reuben spotted the error and pounced to make it 2-1. Reuben then bagged our 3rd from a through ball, out pacing the Stocksbridge defence to power through the keeper. Stocksbridge battled back and made it 3-2 only 5 minutes later. Our 4th was a belter! Cal swung in a corner for Henry to meet it with a bullet header on the 6yd line. Stocksbridge then pulled another one back through a very unfortunate bounce pass back to beat Rufus, 4-3.
Things were feeling a little bit twitchy in the dugout, but have no fear. Before we knew it Cal tucked one in at the back stick to give us a 2 goal cushion again, 5-3. Then with 5 minutes left to go, Reuben sealed it with 2 cool finishes after racing through the Stocksbridge defence yet again.
This team don’t know when to stop, and quitting just isn’t in their nature. Top teamwork and togetherness to get their reward. Loving the attitude and commitment. To think we only had one sub, Rufus was poorly and Hunter played with an injury. Add to that the knocks that Caleb and Dylan got, this was a fantastic performance. 🙌🏻👏🏻
PotM winners were Reuben and Henry. Reuben was clearly frustrated in the first half as it just wouldn’t go in for him but, he kept up his runs, energy and team play. He then got his rewards with 5 goals, terrorising the Stocksbridge defence. Henry looked to rise at every opportunity to help the team get back into the game and keep that goal lead. His drive and energy helped boss that midfield again. 🏆🏆
Final score 7-3
Goal scorers: Reuben 5, Callum 1, Henry 1
2nd fixture of 2024, and it’s another home game! This coming Sunday’s opponents are Stocksbridge Park Steels as we look to build on the great second half performance from last week. Our midweek training session was full of energy and we hope to take that into this game. The tea’s, coffee’s and bacon cobs will be flowing and we’re sure the game will be another entertaining one. See you all there ⚽️
We kicked off 2024 yesterday with a much welcomed home game. Having not played since November due to all the rain we’ve had it was great to finally get a game on.
Although the pitch was a bit heavy, both teams didn’t let it phase them as they put in an energetic performance. Whitwell showed a little rustiness in front of goal but as the first half went on we soon got into a rhythm and deserved to come in at halftime 2-0 up.
The usual frantic madness at halftime as the players fought to be the first to get a Cherry or Orange Jaffa, and orange piece, Eden out muscling them all to make sure she got an Orange Jaffa💪🏻😁
The second half was probably one of the most dominant of our season so far. Wave after wave of attacks but, what stood out was the way we went about it. Calm, determined and clever. The passing was some of our best in terms of not panicking and not being greedy. That helped to pin Ecclesfield back and made them resort to a back 4 to try and stop us. Credit to our team as they found a way, hitting 5 second half goals.
Great stuff Whitwell FC U12’s. It’s exciting to be back and watching you play the way you do. Let’s hope for a top second half of the season full of effort, determination and enjoyable football 💪🏻👊🏻⚽️
Our 2 PotM winners actually went to 3 players yesterday; Zak, Hunter & Henry. Zak got the rewards for his efforts today. He has good technical ability but we’ve been working on upping his effort, determination and energy levels to get him into the positions to help the team. That was there today topping it off with 2 goals and an assist. I couldn’t split Hunter and Henry, and for different reasons. Hunter was very calm again on the ball, happy to receive under pressure, play the passes and help the team go and build the attacks. Henry was as energetic as ever bossing that midfield. His range of pass was good and is showing an eye for an assist. He drives the team forward and when he needs to can pull off the skill to beat a player. 🏆 🏆
Final score 7-1
Goal scorers: Callum 2, Reuben 2, Zak 2, Henry 1
A quick reverse now sees us playing at home tomorrow. Hosting Ecclesfield Spartans, it will be our first game since November 🌧️🙈
It will be great to get a game on. Hope to see you all there WAWAW 🔵⚫️🟡⚫️
Wishing all our players, parents, spectators and sponsors a very Merry Christmas 🎅🏻🎄
We can’t wait to see you all in the New Year for our second half of the season

What an awesome morning paintballing for the team Christmas party🎅🏻🔫🎨😁
Loads of fun, and a fare few bruises to take home as well 😂
Well, with our last game of 2023 being called off due to the weather causing a waterlogged pitch, it’s good to end our footballing year on a more positive note!
These last 12 months have seen the team improve massively, both in terms of performances and their enjoyment of the game. Moving from U11’s into competitive U12’s the team has seen some changes but the one constant is their commitment and determination to do their best in the game they love. Finishing off U11’s 2022/23 season as double cup winners 🏆🏆 then going through the first half of their U12’s 2023/24 season winning all their league and cup games. Both teams, U11’s and U12’s were and are a pleasure to be around and coach, and watching their games is a real treat for any spectator. Well done to all players. One last training session and a Christmas party to go, then we’ll all enjoy the break ready to blast out of the blocks in January ⚽️🙌🏻 WAWAW 🔵⚫️🟡⚫️
Update: this is now cancelled due to waterlogging! 🌧️👎🏻
We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this still goes ahead due to the rain we’ve had and is forecast for tomorrow 🤞🏻
This will be our last game of 2023 so we’ll do our best with the pitch to keep it on. Come and cheer the team on against Greasbrough Youth before the Christmas break kicks in. Grab yourselves a tea/coffee and even a bacon cob 😋
☕️🥓⚽️
A huge shout out to our Fantastic 4!!!! These 4 players started with the team on day 1 back in September 2017. 6 years, stacks of amazing memories and appearances later, and they’re still going, stronger than ever. Well done Henry, Fraser, Callum, Zak. Keep it up boys ⚽️🙌🏻 WAWAW 🔵⚫️🟡⚫️
Last Sundays home game saw the team extend their great run of games this season. As has been the case when previously playing against Maltby, they had some great outfield players and their keeper pulled off some fantastic saves. Whitwell had to make sure the energy levels were there to compete for every ball and they did that throughout the game.
Whitwell flew out of the blocks scoring the first goal within a minute of the kickoff. Things then settled as the first half went on although Whitwell had several chances in the first half but were unable to beat the Maltby keeper or they found the side netting. The first half finished with Whitwell 2-1 up and ready for an orange and Jaffa cake 😃
The second half turned a little bit scrappy at times but Whitwell still found a rhythm to try and keep the attacks going, finding the back of the net a further 4 times.
Final score 6-1
Goal scorers: Reuben 4, Conor 1, Henry 1
Our 2 PotM winners were Henry and Jack. Henry took quite a bit of stick throughout the game, on the end of some very dirty challenges but, he kept a cool head, let his football do the talking and grabbed a well deserved goal for his energetic all round play. Jack put in his best display of the season so far. His covering at the back is well thought out and his aggression is increasing each week as he gets used to a new league. Jack always looked to control the ball and then get his head up to look for the pass, supporting his winger down that left hand side with good distribution. 🏆🏆
Only 1 game played in the last 5 weeks due to continued rain 🌧️😩 has been frustrating to say the least. We now have a home game to look forward to though this coming Sunday! Hosting Maltby Juniors who in the past have been a really tough team to play against, we hope to see as many of you there as possible to cheer us on. With only 3 games left of 2023 we hope the grassroots weather gods are in our favour ☀️🤞🏻
WAWAW 🔵⚫️🟡⚫️
Coming off the back of not having a game for the last 3 weeks it was smiles all round to be playing again. On a foggy Remembrance Sunday morning, the team were on it from the first whistle. They’d put in a top training session in midweek and they continued that into their game, hitting the back of the net 5 times in the first half, and from 5 different scorers.
During the first half we pinned Hallam in their own half for the majority and that was mainly thanks to our back 3 defending on the front foot and not giving Hallam the chance to break.
Throughout the game our central midfielders battled well to retain possession and at every opportunity played out wide for our wingers to get at the Hallam fullbacks and provide the crosses into the box.
I’ve said this many times already this season and I’ll say it again. This team work so hard for each other, pass the ball well to each other and have a togetherness on the pitch that is seeing them reap the benefits. Another 3pts, but just as, if not more important, a performance to back it up. The coaches aren’t too bad either 😜
Well done Whitwell FC. Keep it up 👍🏻
Final score 6-0
Goal scorers - Reuben 2, Callum 1, Conor 1, Dylan 1, Henry 1
Our 2 PotM winners were Hunter and Fraser. I think yesterday was Hunter’s best performance of the season so far. Settling into that centre back position he brings a calmness to the back line. He attacked the ball well to turnover possession. He always looked to control the ball, dribbling out of defence really well and played the passes to keep the ball moving and keep possession. Fraser, playing in his usual right back position is rarely beaten whether it be physically or for speed and that was the case again yesterday. What he’s now doing on a regular basis is providing end product as an attacking fullback. He linked up well down that right hand side with his winger, providing crosses into the box and a goal threat from distance. 🏆 🏆
Whitwell FC and Hallam Rangers, paying their respects before today’s game. Lest we forget.
No game for the last 3 Sundays thanks to back to back storms 🌧️🌧️👎🏻 but now we’re back! A home game awaits us this coming Sunday 12th November as we look forward to hosting Hallam Rangers. The forecast looks promising, and the team are buzzing to get a game after what seems forever without one. One thing is for sure, there won’t be a controversial VAR decision in sight. The only decision you’ll need to make is whether you’ll have a tea or a coffee with your bacon cob from our legendary snack hut! Grassroots is where it’s at with nonstop football entertainment ⚽️🙌🏻
WAWAW 🔵⚫️🟡⚫️
An outstanding performance from the team in yesterdays away cup quarterfinal. Playing against a team who are a division above, they really turned it on to outplay and outfight Swinton to put us through to the semifinals.
We’ve not had as good a balance to the team this season, as our central midfielders took on board what was asked of them before the game. It made a huge difference when in transition. Add that to the quality of goals created and scored, and the solid defence and keeper, we looked like a team on a mission.
From the kickoff right to the final whistle we never stopped working, with probably our most energetic showing so far. Leading 4-0 at half time the team were absolutely buzzing as they had their oranges and Jaffa cakes during the break 😋
Then, with the continued effort and determination, they struck 5 more in the second half. Now onto the Semifinal next March 🏆🙏
Final score 9-1
Goal scorers: Reuben 4, Henry 2, Callum 1, Conor 1, Fraser 1
Our 2 PotM winners were Conor and Henry. Conor looks to be really enjoying his role in central midfield. He has great feet and range of pass. He’s becoming more physical this season which is helping him and the team to retain possession of the ball as well as transitioning to attack. He showed all of that today, scored a really well taken first time goal and provided a top assist. Henry dominated the midfield battle yesterday. Swinton couldn’t cope with his physicality but also the skill he’s added to his game, changing direction with ease. He setup our first goal, and his 2 goals were great including a bullet header from a corner. 🏆🏆
Awesome football, Whitwell FC!!

Goals galore for the team yesterday. In summer style weather conditions the team really turned it on to produce our biggest win of the season so far. 7 different scorers, and 6 different players who added the assists. This will definitely do the goal difference good and it served as a great game to keep the momentum going.
We had a brilliant turnout for the game, it was great to see so many of you come to support the team. You were certainly treated to a fare few goals. ⚽️
Final score 14-2
Goal scorers: Reuben 7, Henry 2, Callum 1, Dylan 1, Fraser 1, Hunter 1, Jack 1
We gave out 3 PotM awards yesterday to Eden, Reuben and Rufus. We couldn’t split Eden and Reuben so gave it them both. Eden’s game has really improved this season from a maturity point of view. She is trying to read the game, get into the right positions, and take time to control and play out from the back. We know she is always a physical presence on the pitch but to add the other side to her game is great to see. Reuben’s energy up top puts us on the front foot with pressing the ball high up the pitch. He never stops, and thoroughly deserves the amount goals he’s scoring. He’s adding passing to his game and is working on playing with his back to goal which should add another dimension to our game. Rufus was out injured last week but was desperate to play today. Luckily he came through the warmup fine and then went on to assert himself on the game by playing sweeper keeper at every opportunity. We’re sure at one point he was in centre midfield clearing the danger. His confidence is great to see and can be seen comfortably playing out from the back. 🏆🏆🏆
A huge thank you to our little superstars running the bake sale yesterday. Thank you so much to all who baked and all who bought something 🙌🏻🙌🏻
When is our next home game I hear you say? It’s here! This Sunday 8th we host SJR Worksop in the league. The team were buzzing in training this week and can’t wait for kickoff. To all our supporters, new and old, we’re looking forward to seeing you at the game. As ever, our top notch snack hut will be open for supporters to purchase refreshments including bacon cobs 🥓 ☕️ 🍫
There will also be a bake sale to raise funds towards the grounds maintenance. Roll on Sunday!! ⚽️🙌🏻
Away days, and a pretty eventful one at that! Playing away against Abbey Lane on their 3G pitch we were optimistic that the surface would help us play the passes, but then we remembered the 3G pitches are tiny 🙈 (any excuse I hear you say 😂)
We were unfortunately down to the bare 9 and with no keeper due to injuries and Illness, so were up against it. Couple that with having to play with 8 for the last 10 minutes of the first half after another injury, stress levels were high 🤪
In true Whitwell FC style, the team were bullish and determined to push through and give it their all to try and get their rewards. 2-1 down at half time and down to 8 players it was tough going. In an energy fuelled second half and back up to 9 players, we attacked in waves and came away with a deserved win 💪🏻👏🏻🙌🏻 A team performance to remember, including a goal of the season contender from our flying right back Fraser.
Final score 4-2
Goal scorers: Reuben 2, Hunter 1, Fraser 1
Our 2 PotM winners were Hunter and Henry. Hunter stepped up to help his team by volunteering to be one of our stand in keepers. Then when playing out he brought a calmness to our back line and was brave to put his body in the way to stop the Abbey Lane attacks. Slotting into midfield in the second half his calmness continued as he controlled the ball and looked to play the passes. He then got his reward with a well taken left foot volley to get us to 3-1. Henry’s high energy levels were on display yet again again today, driving his team forward but also making sure he transitioned to get back in to help defend. He showed good feet in and around the box and was unselfish to try and pass to a teammate on the edge of the 6 yard box as we were looking to take the lead. His never say die attitude is great to see as well as his increased passing range this season. 🏆🏆
A big shoutout to our 4 stand in keepers: Hunter, Fraser, Callum, Dylan 🧤🧤🧤🧤
Wishing a speedy recovery to our injured and poorly players 🙏

Yesterdays home cup match against AFC Pogmoor, who play in a division above us, saw us put in a top team display with no doubt it was our best performance of the season so far.
We looked dangerous with almost every attack and us coaches were left baffled how we weren’t 5 or 6 up in the first half as we had great shots saved by the brilliant AFC Pogmoor keeper, and we hit the post on more than one occasion.
We made a slight change in formation playing 2 centre mid’s rather than a CDM and CAM and it seemed to suit us better, allowing us to get a hold of the ball in central areas and play on from there. Our defenders were solid throughout and at every opportunity played out from the back with confidence. Our wing play was strong in providing crosses into and across the box and our keeper display was top notch!
We’re all immensely proud of the whole team and the way they played for each other, encouraged each other and celebrated with each other for the goals! 🙌🏻
Final score 6-3
Goal scorers - Reuben 5, Conor 1
Our 2 PotM winners were Conor and Fraser. Conor looked to thrive on the switch into centre midfield. His skills were on point and so was his passing range. He worked hard for his team, was unlucky to see his first half effort saved down to the bottom corner but then went on to score a well taken goal at the far post in the second half. Fraser put in a proper attacking fullbacks performance. He went about his defensive duties with strength and composure and as soon as the opportunities came, he attacked down that right wing with speed and energy getting a well deserved assist for our best goal of the game. 🏆🏆
