Introducing our fantastic Director Ruth Evans and our Musical Director Robert Guy!

Ruth Evans

Mae Ruth yn gynhyrchydd creadigol, gyfarwyddwr a cherddor corawl. Yn wreiddiol o Lanarmon-yn-Iâl ger Rhuthun, astudiodd ym Mhrifysgol Rhydychen gydag ysgoloriaeth gorawl cyn ennill gradd Meistr o Brifysgol Cymru mewn cerddoleg a pherfformio. Cynhyrchydd Gweithredol gyda Chôr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Prydain yw ei rôl rheoli artistig bresennol. Ymhlith y sefydliadau blaenorol mae Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru, Glyndebourne ac Ensemble Cymru. Yn ddiweddar mae hi wedi cyfarwyddo cynyrchiadau yn y Royal Albert Hall, Snape Maltings a’r Canolfan VOCES8 yn Llundain. Cynhyrchodd/comisiynodd yr operâu newydd Gair ar Gnawd gan Pwyll ap Siôn i Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru a Thalu’r Pibydd yn Glyndebourne.

Ruth is a creative producer, director and choral musician. Originally from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl near Ruthin, she studied at Oxford University with a choral scholarship then gained a Masters from the University of Wales in musicology and performance. Her current artistic management role is at National Youth Choir of Great Britain as Executive Producer. Previous organisations include Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne and Ensemble Cymru. She has recently directed productions at the Royal Albert Hall, Snape Maltings and the VOCES8 Centre in London. Ruth has been the producer/commissioner for new operas Gair ar Gnawd by Pwyll ap Siôn for Welsh National Opera and Pay the Piper at Glyndebourne.

Robert Guy - Conductor

Cafodd yr Arweinydd Robert Guy ei eni a’i fagu yn Wrecsam ac erbyn hyn maent yn Prif Arweinydd Cerddorfa Ieuenctid Ffilharmonig Lerpwl a Chyd-gyfarwyddwr Artistig i NEW Sinfonia. Mae uchafbwyntiau’r tymor i ddod 2024/25 yn cynnwys ei ymddangosiad cyntaf ar y West End yn y theatr eiconig sy’n eiddo i Andrew Lloyd Webber, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, mewn cyngerdd gyda’r gantores Lucy Thomas. Ymhlith ei ymrwymiadau arwain diweddar derbyniodd gwahoddiad i arwain at yr Ŵyl Biano Chopin a gynhaliwyd yn Pristina gyda Cherddorfa Ffilharmonig Kosovo a Peter Donohoe. Wrexham-born conductor Robert Guy is Principal Conductor to the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Co-Artistic Director to NEW Sinfonia. Forthcoming 2024/25 season highlights include making his West End concert debut at the Andrew Lloyd Webber-owned iconic Theatre Royal Drury Lane in a concert with singer Lucy Thomas. Recent conducting engagements include being invited to conduct at the Chopin Piano Festival held in Pristina with the Kosovo Philharmonic Orchestra and Peter Donohoe. Robert has made debuts with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, The Orchestra of Opera North, Huddersfield Choral Society, and has acted as Assistant Conductor to Simon Halsey for the BBC Proms Youth Choir at the BBC Proms.

Our brand new opera with music by Jon Guy and a libretto by Grahame Davies was commissioned by NEW Sinfonia and the North Wales International Music Festival.

Jonathan Guy - Cyfansoddwr / Composer

Creawdwr cerddoriaeth o Wrecsam yw Jon Guy gydag ymlyniad cryf i Ogledd Cymru lle cafodd ei fagu a lle maent yn parhau i gynhyrchu a pherfformio cerddoriaeth. Yn ogystal â bod yn Gyd-gyfarwyddwr Artistig i NEW Sinfonia maent wedi creu casgliad cynyddol o gyfansoddiadau a threfniadau ar gyfer ystod o ddigwyddiadau a pherfformiadau'r gerddorfa. O greu’r stori a’r gerddoriaeth ar gyfer Slumbersaurus, antur gerddorol i blant ifanc, i drawsgroesiadau diwylliannol o ganeuon gwerin Bosniaidd a Chymreig yn Eisteddfod Gerddorol Ryngwladol Llangollen, a chynyrchiadau aml-gelfyddyd fel Where Light Meets Dark. Jon Guy is a music creator from Wrexham with a strong attachment to North Wales where he grew up and continues to produce and perform music. In addition to his role as Co-artistic Director of NEW Sinfonia, Jon has created an ever expanding trove of compositions and arrangements for a range of NEW Sinfonia events and performances. From creating the story and music for Slumbersaurus, a musical adventure for young children, to cultural crossovers of Bosnian and Welsh folk songs at the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod, and multi art form productions such as Where Light Meets Dark. Jon continues to produce innovative musical works that connect NEW Sinfonia to its audiences and communities. Gresford: Up From Underground will be his latest and most ambitious work to date.

Grahame Davies

Awdur o Gymru yw Grahame Davies, sydd wedi ennill nifer o wobrau, gan gynnwys Gwobr Llyfr y Flwyddyn. Fel libretydd y mae galw mawr amdano, mae’n cydweithio’n helaeth â chyfansoddwyr ac fe ysgrifennodd y geiriau ar gyfer y gân ‘Sacred Fire’, gan y cyfansoddwr Sarah Class, a berfformiwyd gan y soprano o Dde Affrica Pretty Yende, fel un o uchafbwyntiau cerddorol seremoni Coroni'r Brenin Charles III ym mis Mai 2023, cân a ddisgrifwyd gan Andrew Lloyd Webber fel un oedd yn ‘mesmereiddio’, a chan y sylwebydd Robert Hardman fel un ‘orwych’. Grahame Davies is a Welsh author, who has won numerous prizes, including the Wales Book of the Year Award. As a much-sought-after lyricist, he collaborates extensively with composers and wrote the words for the song 'Sacred Fire', by composer Sarah Class, which, performed by South African soprano Pretty Yende, was one of the musical highlights of the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023, and was described by Andrew Lloyd Webber as 'mesmerising', and by commentator Robert Hardman as 'exquisite'. A native of Coedpoeth near Wrexham, he has a degree in English from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, and a PhD from Cardiff University, honorary D.Litts from Anglia Ruskin University, and Aberdeen University, an honorary fellowship of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the title of Honorary Professor of Practice from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. In 2023, The KIng made him a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) for his work in organising the music for the Coronation.

Wrexham: Gresford Colliery disaster opera gets world premiere The anniversary of the tragedy which killed 266 people will be marked with a new opera.

As part of our ‘Remembering Gresford’ project we were pleased to have two of our musicians Bethan and Charlotte perform for our friends at Bryn Bella & Highfield homes. They played the hymn tune for Gresford ‘Out of the Depths’ which many residents knew and sang along to. Live music inspires everyone and its positive effect on wellbeing can be long lasting and profound.

Felicity Cliffe

Felicity began conducting whilst still an undergraduate student, on a course for female beginners with Alice Farnham in 2015. She is now studying for a master's degree at the Royal Northern College of Music with Mark Heron and Clark Rundell supported by the D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust. She was a finalist in this year’s National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain’s Young Conductor Competition. Before moving to Manchester, Felicity held appointments with the Hayes Symphony Orchestra, Beckenham Concert Band and also became assistant conductor to Philip Mackenzie at the Amadeus Academy with the Mozart Symphony Orchestra. She has worked with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Salford Symphony Orchestra, Leeds Haydn Players and is due to conduct the Blackpool Symphony Orchestra.

Alec Frank-Gemmill

Alec is well-known among audiences in the UK and beyond as a horn player. He has performed extensively as as an orchestral player, a chamber musician and also as a soloist, the latter most recently in Ligeti's Hamburg Concerto in the Philharmonie in Berlin. He has acted as assistant to various conductors, including Ryan Bancroft at the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He had his first concert as director in 2022 with the Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra and makes debuts with orchestras in Finland and Italy next season. Alec is the founder and director of Odin Ensemble, a Gothenburg-based group which performs on instruments from the early 20th century. In recognition of "an artistry in constant development and deepening", he received the 2023 Sten A. Olsson scholarship for culture from Sweden's Stena Foundation.

Trevor Naughton

Trevor Naughton (1st year masters) joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 1997, studying trumpet and violin at the Royal Marines School of Music. Throughout a career as a performer with the Royal Marines, he quickly developed a passion for conducting, arranging and composing. This saw him complete both a BMus(Hons) degree and the yearlong Royal Marines Bandmasters’ course in 2013, in the process gaining an LRSM in Wind Band Direction. As an arranger Trevor has supplied large scale works for the annual Mountbatten Festival of Music at the Royal Albert Hall for the past 10 years, as a conductor and leader he has held the position of Warrant Officer Bandmaster of two royal Marines Band and finished his career within the non commissioned ranks as Bandmaster of Training at the Royal Marines School of Music. After commissioning as a Royal Marines Officer and a Director of Music in 2022, Trevor now looks forward to learning new skills and developing as a conductor on the RNCM Masters Conducting programme.

Harry Lai

Originally from Hong Kong, Harry Lai is currently pursuing an Orchestral Conducting Masters under the tutelage of Mark Heron and Clark Rundell at the RNCM. Harry has collaborated with orchestras including the Hallé, Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchestra Pforzheim (SWDKO), English Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, and Opera Plovdiv Orchestra as well as frequently assisting the BBC Philharmonic and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras. His studies are generously supported by the Waverley Trust and Dorothy Smith Scholarship. Currently, Harry is working as the assistant conductor at Birmingham Opera Company, with the CBSO and Alpesh Chauhan for their upcoming project of Sir Michael Tippett’s last opera ‘New Year’.

Benjamin Voce

Benjamin Voce is the Music Director of the Devon Philharmonic Orchestra, one of South-West England’s leading symphony orchestras. Since 2022 he has worked as assistant conductor to Thomas Adès with orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, London Philharmonic and the Hallé. Having first completed a degree in Mathematics, and subsequently studying music at Daniel Barenboim’s prestigious Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin, Benjamin enjoys incorporating his mathematical mindset to his musicianship and exploring the relationship between the two disciplines.

Hannah Trudgeon

Hannah is a conductor, composer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked as Musical Director and Bandmaster for some of the country’s most prestigious bands. After joining the Royal Marines Band Service in 2002 to study piano and clarinet, Hannah enjoyed drafts to the Portsmouth, Dartmouth, Collingwood and and Scotland. As current Director of Music and previous Bandmaster at RM Band Collingwood, she has conducted at many prestigious events and concerts. After achieving a Masters degree in composition she was delighted that the band of RNCM with Royal Marines Band members premiered her work ‘Winter Portrait’ in 2022. She lives in Portsmouth with her husband Phil and three lively sons aged 7, 5 and 3.

Connor Lyster

Conductor and percussionist Connor Lyster gained an honours degree from the Royal College of Music in percussion and timpani before embarking on a conducting career that has already seen him working with festivals and orchestras across the nation. Most recently he was a guest conductor for the Burnley orchestra and the Todmorden Orchestra. In 2018 he was invited to become the principal conductor of the Lasham Music Festival and in 2022 he founded Concord Sinfonia. He has since had the opportunity to work with the BBC Philharmonic, The Hallé and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and The Hallé.
