The Blue Bell

The Blue Bell is York's smallest Public House. It is Grade II* Listed and its untouched Edwardian decor is the oldest in the city. Please don’t be offended!

Strict House Rules have been in place since 1903 and no groups are allowed. It's a proper pub, for proper pub people. Established in 1798, The Blue Bell is York’s smallest and most beautiful pub. Last decorated in 1903 and retaining all of it’s Edwardian charm, a drink in The Blue Bell is a step back in time. Our award-winning Master Cellarman takes great pride in the selection and quality of the

As is tradition, it's Alex's job to choose his first guest ale... and what a corker it is!
Brewed with what the brewery described as a "shed load" of proper ginger, Into The Valley doesn't look like it will last long!
Thank you Alex for stepping into difficult shoes to fill and bringing your gingerly flavours to The Blue Bell!

It's been a little while, but we can't tell you how happy we are to get our good friends at Brew York back on the bar again!
Florentine Milk Stout at 4.9% - it won't last long.

We try our best not to have two beers from the same brewery on the bar at the same time.
But when we do, it's always a great week!

23/10/2024

We've got Half Moon's Cinder Toffee on the bar but it's our last cask, so when it's gone, it's gone! It should last through the day, but we doubt there'll be much left tomorrow, when it will be replaced by Brass Castle's sublime Bad Kitty. Enjoy!

Our Story

The Blue Bell is York's only Grade II* Listed Edwardian décor pub with an unaltered 1903 interior. Also York's smallest Public House, the first pint was poured in 1798 and since then it has won dozens of CAMRA awards for the quality of its beer, service and atmosphere. More recently it is York CAMRA's Pub of the Season for Winter 2016/17, Visit York’s Pub of the Year finalist, Yorkshire Post’s Pub of the Week and CAMRA Pub of the Year finalist 2018.
Recently the pub has vastly improved its non-cask ale drinks range and now boasts extensive gin, whisky, fine wine and bottled beer menus, meaning you can enjoy the atmosphere and history of the pub whilst enjoying their favourite drink (but we still recommend you try at least one pint of ale!) For those not in the mood for alcohol there is also an extensive soft and hot drink selection.

Although we’re the smallest pub in York our choice of seven cask ales means we have something for every taste. In celebration of winning a major legal battle to keep the pub from falling into the clutches of corporate madness we asked the wonderful guys at Brew York to create our House IPA. Brewed only yards away it is gaining traction as one of the best pints available in the city. It’s expertly kept by our very own Master Cellarman and brewed especially for us so you won’t find it anywhere else – even the brewery tap!

We believe in the simple things in life: a quality drink served by lovely staff in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. For this reason we have strict House Rules such as no swearing, no noisy groups and no stag or hen parties. We have no TVs, music or games machines and we kindly ask that all mobile phone conversations are held outside the public rooms. As modern society races ever onwards you can rest assured that inside these four walls not much has changed in centuries.
