🦖Residents and visitors to York were treated to a roarsome day out with The Dinosaur Experience in the city centre at the weekend!🦖

Our family-friendly project was based on Parliament Street, where crowds gathered to meet Betsy the Triceratops and Roxy the T-Rex, along with a selection of adorable baby dinosaurs and their dinosaur rangers to keep them in order…

There was also representatives from the police and fire services on site, with the opportunity to check out the emergency vehicles!

This is one of many projects that supports our Purple Flag accreditation in the city, meaning York reaches a standard of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy.

Purple Flag status is administered by York BID and strengthened through BID projects that help make York a safe and welcoming destination for all.

Each week, many people travel by train to get to the heart of the city.

🍷 While we want everyone to have a great time, it's worth remembering that rail companies can refuse travel if they believe you're inebriated 🍺

📢 Help us rejuvenate York city centre 📢

✨ Over six rejuvenation days earlier in the year, we worked with 100 volunteers to clean and re-paint around 450 pieces of street furniture.

📆 Due to fantastic feedback on the project, we have now scheduled three more rejuvenation days on 10th, 12th & 18th September.

🖌️ We’ll be working on Lendal, Museum Street, George Hudson Street, Dame Judi Dench Walk and the surrounding areas to paint up bike racks, benches, bollards, and other street furniture - everything will be taped up beforehand, so no artistic skills are necessary!

Selkie Ray & Beneath Usa

📍 20 Foss Islands Road

🦦 This 23m long mural brightens up the wall running alongside Foss Walk. The area was previously a target for graffiti but now the high footfall area celebrates York’s rivers and wetlands.

🌊 This project was delivered as part of York Cares Big Community Challenge 2023. In partnership with St Nicks and the City of York Council Environment and Communities Team, the challenge focused on the maintenance and restoration of river and wetland habitats in York, supporting multiple different sites and culminating in improving this section of the Foss Walk.

🍃 The 'Beneath Usa' mural ('usa' meaning 'water' in Celtic) was created by Yorkshire-based artist Selkie Ray, who specialises in large-scale installations and has a particular interest in nature.

ATM & The Tansy Beetle

📍 11 Queen Street

🚆 This mural can be found on Queen Street; a short walk from the train station and city walls. This piece was commissioned by environmental charity New Networks for Nature and supported by York BID to raise awareness of the decline of the insect.

♻️ The Tansy Beetle mural was created by street artist ATM, who specialises in painting endangered species on urban walls to draw attention to the environmental crisis. There are purposefully no name tags on ATM’s murals, as he wants people to appreciate wildlife for what it is.

STATIC & Coney Street

📍 43 Coney Street

💡 This vibrant mural spruced up the little-used alleyway between Boots and WHSmith on Coney Street that needed some TLC. York BID also provided street lighting as part of this project, which has been successful in reducing anti-social behaviour in this area.

🤝 This project was in collaboration with local urban arts organisation, Art of Protest Projects. It took Yorkshire-born, internationally renowned artist duo STATIC three days to complete the mural; their first solo piece created within their home county.

SledOne & Ey Up York

📍 Back Swinegate

🧠 The mural was created as part of the York Festival of Ideas. The theme of the 2024 festival was ‘The Power Of’ – and the mural is themed on ‘The Power of Place’.

🌎 The 20m² mural was designed and painted by SledOne, who has worked in Amsterdam and Hanover, as well as London, Cardiff and Glasgow.

🦅 SledOne’s trademark vibrant, layered style can be seen in the mural’s striking typography, and large-scale portrait of a peregrine falcon, which now famously nest at York Minster, and symbolises York's heritage and endurance.

York BID and partners have recently launched their latest campaign ‘Choose Respect, Not Regrets’, a Purple Flag initiative, which highlights the importance of respectful behaviour in the city.

The campaign was devised after increased reports of hate crime towards hospitality staff and highlights a need for behavioural change through key messaging. It urges those enjoying York for one night to consider the impact of their actions on residents, businesses and those visiting for longer, and enforces this through repetition of key messaging, graphics and colours throughout the city.

Leah Pendleton & Make History Every Day

📍 2 St Mary's Square

⛏️ The phrase ‘Make History Every Day’ is taken from the York Narrative; the characters dotted around the mural highlight the importance of individual action, while the artefacts represent the deposits unearthed during the 1970s excavation.

🎨 This mural has been created by York-born artist Leah Pendleton Designs, who creates bold designs featuring typography and playful illustrations.

🦴 Leah was inspired by the Coppergate dig that took place in the 1970s, which unearthed 9m of archaeological layers. Her design shows how each small story contributes to a layer of history, which in turn provides solid foundations for the future.
