The city streets were flooded with a million people from all over the country and other countries to listen to the bands parade this morning. Several schools in the metropolitan area participated in one of the best parades in the country celebrating the 203 years of Independence from Spain. The tour began in front of the Benito Juarez park and ended at the Tecún Umán monument.

Hiking trip from Quetzaltenango to Lake Atitlan (San Pedro).

Hike from Xela, Quetzaltenango to Lake Atitlan This hike will take 21/2 days. During the hike hikkers will be able to see the sunrise from Lake Atitlan, more than 15 volcanoes, the national bird, Quetzal. Amazing walking.

Sadly after three weeks of intensive study, we have to say adios to our friends from Wisconsin, WI and Minnesota, MN. During the farewell party, the students enjoyed Guatemalan food Quichom.

A group of nine middle school educators from Wisconsin, WI and Minnesota, MN visited beautiful Lake Atitlan (Panajachel) in Sololá. The other place they visited was Chichicastenango in Quiché, the largest indigenous market in Central America.

Educators from Wisconsin and Minneapolis visited the municipality of salcaja in quetzaltenango where they could see La Hermita de la Concepción considered as the first church that was built in Central America also the Iglesia de San Andrés It is a colorful church work of descendant Mayan population.

The educators learned about the indigenous dress of Guatemala. They also learned about regional differences of weaving designs, ceramics and traditional cooking over wood stoves.

The Educators visited Trama Textiles, a Women`s Weaving Cooperative, had the opportunity to see a documentary about textiles, then they observed the demonstrations to participate in the process of elaboration of the different types of embroidery that exist and in the end they bought some textiles.

A group of nine middle school educators from Western WI visited el Instituto de Educacion Basica con Orientacion Comercial in the town of San Felipe, Reu with the purpose of observing and learning how the educators in Guatemala run the classes and how the students interact with the classes. This unique opportunity allowed the educators to understand the culture of education the latino students bring with them to the US. Before leaving, the school principal and the educators exchanged ideas about teaching comparing and contrasting the two systems of education.

While visiting Hugo's farm, we saw over ten different types of tropical fruits and plants and were able to taste some picked right from the trees. They harvest their crops for both personal consumption and to sell at the local market.
