🇭🇰 Kazy Chan │ The Twist Of A Halo

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at the opening reception! Your presence made the event memorable, and we’re incredibly grateful for your support.

This exhibition will showcase a diverse range of Kazy’s works, including his largest ceramic sculptures to date, never-seen-before paintings on wood in halo-shaped frames, and his innovative ceramic-on-canvas pieces. In recent years, Kazy has been challenging the limitations imposed on artistic expression by integrating his ceramic sculptures onto the canvas of his paintings. This exhibition offers viewers the chance to experience a wide variety of art forms, each contributing to Kazy’s passionate pursuit of questioning the boundaries we impose on ourselves and the unique responses each medium evokes.

Exhibition Period: 19 July - 18 August, 2024

Location: JPS Gallery Hong Kong

🇭🇰 Kazy Chan │ The Twist Of A Halo

As depicted by a myriad of artists, halos are products of imagination, and their true form remains unknown, allowing for endless interpretations ranging from a simple representation of radiance in the form of a circle to evolving into a symbol of the Trinity in the shape of a cross. All of the halos in Kazy’s works exhibit the artist’s unrestricted flow and adhere to spontaneity. This creative motion holds significant importance to him as only until the beams of light converge and close into a ring can the ultimate form be ascertained. It is precisely because of its boundless potential that the halo remains malleable, welcoming constant exploration and deliberate distortions.

🇭🇰 Kazy Chan │ The Twist Of A Halo

A halo, a symbol of holiness, traditionally depicted as a circular or arched manifestation of light encircling the head of a revered figure, takes on a fresh representation in Hong Kong artist Kazy Chan’s upcoming solo exhibition, The Twist Of A Halo. By challenging the fixed preconceptions that often stifle our creativity and understanding, Kazy distorts and reimagines this ethereal symbol through various mediums in hopes that viewers can reflect on the ever-changing nature of their perceptions and knowledge of the world.

As the Paris Olympics 2024 captivates the world, is pleased to present “Off-Piste”, a group exhibition offering a parallel exploration of themes that extend beyond traditional sports. Set against this global event, "Off-Piste" leverages the dual meaning of its title – a skiing term also signifying defying norms – to present a collection of thought-provoking and transformative artworks. Reflecting the Olympics' celebration of diversity and inclusivity, the exhibition aims to be an inclusive art showcase featuring a wide range of mediums, including painting, installation art, and mixed media.

This exhibition gathers works from three artists hailing from different countries: Anouchka Gérard .gerard, Dourone and Mao Yu Qiu , each contributing unique viewpoints on competition, sustainability, and the human condition. Together, these pieces invite viewers to reflect on environmental responsibilities, societal values, and the boundaries we impose on ourselves and others.

The exhibition takes its name from the old Catalan word “Saó,” signifying maturity, perfection, and the essence of opportune moments. Through her art, the artist warmly invites viewers to embark on a personal journey of self-reflection and contemplation, urging them to find beauty and meaning in the ordinary and to embrace the transformative power of acceptance.

Ivy MA King Chu〡Ascending and Descending
Curated by

Now on view at  is Hong Kong artist Ivy MA King Chu’s first solo exhibition in Paris.

Compared to the first floor, the underground exhibition space offers a more intimate feel: a series of works are quietly gathered in various corners, along with letters from the curator, awaiting the audience to open and read them. A group of emotionally intense works about Hong Kong is also hidden here, reminding viewers to feel the omnipresent homesickness in the artist's seemingly romantic and unrestrained journey—not just a sentimental response to a specific city and its turbulent current events, but also a universal contemplation on "how people truly connect with places.”

"A Study of an Episode in The Passion of Joan of Arc," is a new work specially created for this exhibition, inspired by Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer's film "La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc" (the bird imagery that continually appears in Ivy's work initially came from this film). It borrows the close-up of Joan's feet descending the spiral staircase to her death, responding to the unique design of the gallery space and serving as a distinctive counterpoint to the many ascending bird images in the exhibition. Keep walking—ascending, descending, historical, future— they ultimately merge into one through accidental encounters.

Curated by

Now on view at  is Hong Kong artist Ivy MA King Chu’s first solo exhibition in Paris.

Upon entering the first-floor exhibition space, visitors will see over a hundred new works from the "Bird Of Shape: Cities" series arranged chronologically, providing an archival panoramic record. During her long journey, Ivy began capturing images of birds in different cities. She set her camera to take two consecutive frames in rapid succession, printed the captured photos on paper, and then used cutting, collage, and painting to destruct and reorganise them.

As a result, distance and space are rearranged, and the concrete and abstract are intricately juxtaposed. The ascending birds transform into ingenious and witty images that seem to endlessly vary in metaphor.

"THE WEALTH OF FRIENDSHIP" is an installation featuring an abstract Chinese character sculpture, "財" (COI), which means wealth in Chinese, accompanied by three small traditional Chinese stools. The concept of "wealth" can encompass various interpretations, from material wealth to emotional and spiritual richness. For the artist, Cynthia, true wealth lies in the value of the people around you; no amount of material possessions can replace the joy and comfort of genuine friendship. Cynthia conveys this idea through the simplicity of chairs, symbolising a place where people gather to share their experiences, both good and bad. The installation is painted in Cynthia's signature vibrant colours, celebrating the joy of friendship that can truly enrich a person's life.

Ivy MA King Chu〡Ascending and Descending

Curated by , Hong Kong artist Ivy MA King Chu’s first solo exhibition with the gallery “Ascending and Descending” will be presented at in June. Ivy has been exploring painting, photography, and installation art for over twenty years. Her work has entered a unique new phase in recent years.

The exhibition title "Ascending and Descending" includes "Ascending," which encompasses the recurrent bird imagery in the artist's new phase, the metaphysical exploration of abstract art, and the transcendence and spirituality they jointly point to. "Descending" corresponds to the continual repetition and extension of daily life, the sudden interruption of events, and the theme of death, which is closely tied to transcendence.

The exhibition unfolds in three stages, each a pivotal phase in the artist’s journey to bringing this unique experience to life. The final room will feature the artist’s personal home videos and newly painted large-scale paintings, including one that spans over eight meters wide, a monumental piece that stands as the largest painting the gallery has ever exhibited. These large-scale paintings beautifully capture the multifaceted nature of life, from moments of pure joy to trials and tribulations. They serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between public facade and private authenticity in family life. Through his art, Speagle invites viewers to cherish family bonds and embrace the hope for brighter moments, even in the face of adversity.

Exhibition Period: 3 May - 1 June, 2024

Reborn from the Ashes examines identity and the challenges of diaspora, in particular through The Burden, an installation that questions migration, memories, and the burdens of heritage. The work encourages us to reflect on what we take with us and what we leave behind in life’s movements.

🇭🇰 Paul Hunter Speagle │ The Speagle’s

By examining his relationship with the world around him, be it religion, politics, or family, every inch of every painting in this exhibition serves as an honest window into the Speagle family’s daily life. These relatable moments between family members, from intriguing conversations with their daughter to moments of passion between husband and wife, these paintings are a canvas of introspection, personal catharsis, and a testament to the artist’s effort to become a better parent.

Exhibition Period: 3 May - 1 June, 2024

Location: JPS Gallery Hong Kong

🇭🇰 Paul Hunter Speagle │ The Speagle’s

Inspired by his wife’s advice to “paint your life and us,” this exhibition will feature a newly painted large-scale painting spanning over eight meters wide, a monumental piece that stands as the largest painting the gallery has ever exhibited. Every inch of every painting serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between public facade and private authenticity in family life. Through his art, Speagle invites viewers to cherish family bonds and embrace the hope for brighter moments, even in the face of adversity.

Opening Reception: Thursday, 2 May, 2024, 5 - 8 pm

Exhibition Period: 3 May - 1 June, 2024

Location: JPS Gallery Hong Kong
