The World Health Organization has declared the worldwide outbreak of the new coronavirus a pandemic, with more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries and 4,291 deaths.
Since our top priority has always been the health and safety of our patients and staff, we request that any patients that have a travel history from any country or have been in close contact with any persons from overseas recently, to please self-monitor and only attend for dental appointments after they have been in Hong Kong and symptom-free for two weeks. For our patients who reside in Hong Kong, we hope these pointers will be useful for you.

1. Delay any non-essential travel if possible, as travelling can spread the disease and also increases your likelihood of being quarantined due to the rapid spread in other countries.

2. Avoid socializing or going to work while sick, even if you have only mild symptoms such as a runny nose or mild fever.

3. If you really need to travel by public transport to work (and you have an understanding boss) request for flexible work hours to avoid large crowds and peak travel times.

4.. Practice good hand hygiene frequently (soap and water for 20 seconds when possible, otherwise alcohol hand rub) and avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes. Use tissue paper to press lift buttons or opening/closing doors and dispose of it appropriately.

5. Cover your cough. The most effective way to prevent transmission of viruses when coughing or sneezing is to use a tissue. Cough or sneeze into your elbow/clothes if no tissue is available.

6. Although the WHO has recommended that masks should only be worn by healthcare workers around sick people or by people that feel unwell themselves, it is the social norm in Hong Kong to see everyone wearing masks. Therefore, always keep a mask handy in your pocket as some buildings and shops require you to wear one before you can enter their premises. Remember to practice good hand hygiene when placing on and disposing your mask.

7.If you have any medical related problems, please contact your healthcare provider or the Department of Health Hotline at 2125 1122 and inform them of your travel history. Be aware that it has been made a criminal offense to provide false or misleading information about your travel history to a healthcare professional.

We all know the benefits of eating fatty fish and nuts are good for the heart, but did you know that it can also lower the risk of gum disease?

In a study published by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, researchers showed that increasing your polyunsaturated fatty acids intake (normally found in foods such as fatty fish and nuts) can help to lower the risk of gum disease and periodontitis -a severe form of gum disease that can lead to tooth and bone loss.

The British Dental Health Foundation Chief executive, Dr. Nigel Carter said: “This study shows that a small and relatively easy change in people’s diet can massively improve the condition of their teeth and gums, which in turn can improve their overall wellbeing.”

Your teeth's first line of defense against what you put in your mouth is something that's already there.

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria that feeds on sugars from food and drinks. That bacteria -- called -- can stick to your teeth, producing acids that eat through the enamel on your teeth. Saliva, that trusty old friend, helps rinse out your and neutralize that process.

👩‍🏫Dentin is made of living cells, which secrete a hard mineral substance.

👩‍🏫Pulp: The softer, living inner structure of teeth. Blood vessels and nerves run through the pulp of the teeth.

👩‍🏫Cementum: A layer of connective tissue that binds the roots of the teeth firmly to the and jawbone.

😮What Are the Different Parts of a ?

👩‍🏫Crown— the top part of the tooth, and the only part you can normally see. The shape of the crown determines the tooth's function. For example, front are sharp and chisel-shaped for cutting, while molars have flat surfaces for grinding.

👩‍🏫Gumline— where the tooth and the gums meet. Without proper brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can build up at the gumline, leading to gingivitis and gum disease.

👩‍🏫Root— the part of the tooth that is embedded in bone. The root makes up about two-thirds of the tooth and holds the tooth in place.

👩‍🏫Enamel— the outermost layer of the tooth. Enamel is the hardest, most mineralized tissue in the body — yet it can be damaged by decay if teeth are not cared for properly.

👩‍🏫Dentin— the layer of the tooth under the enamel. If decay is able to progress its way through the enamel, it next attacks the dentin — where millions of tiny tubes lead directly to the dental pulp.

👩‍🏫Pulp— the soft tissue found in the center of all teeth, where the nerve tissue and blood vessels are. If tooth decay reaches the pulp, you usually feel pain.

👩‍🏫The on the top surface on your is the hardest part of your entire body.

😁Teeth start to form even before you are born—milk teeth or baby teeth start to form when the baby is in the womb, but they come through when the child is between 6-12 months old.

🤗Humans use four different types of teeth (incisors, canine, premolars, and molars) to cut, tear and grind their food.

🤩Humans have only two sets of teeth in their entire lifetime—baby teeth and permanent teeth. Once you have your permanent teeth, make sure you take good care of them.

😅No two people have the same set of teeth—your teeth are as unique as your fingerprint, so be proud of your unique set of teeth.

😮Your mouth produces over 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime—that’s enough to fill two swimming pools. Saliva has many uses, including assisting you with your digestion and protects your teeth from bacteria in your mouth.

If you think your time for a has long passed, think again.

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, about one in five orthodontic patients is an adult & many patients are in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

That means kids, parents and grandparents can reap the benefits of a straighter smile through orthodontic treatment.

👨‍🔬All orthodontists are highly skilled and educated dentists, but only a small percentage of dentists are orthodontists. An orthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention and treatment of teeth irregularities, such as improper bite!

Did you know the first were actually twigs our ancestors chewed on, using the frayed ends to cleanse their teeth? Around 5,000 B.C., the Egyptians used crushed eggshells and ground animal hooves to clean and polish their teeth.

By the 1700s, a British inventor had adapted a design first seen in China – a bone handle with boar bristles inserted into small holes and secured with wire.

😁 might seem like the most modern branch of dentistry, but the "perfect smile" has been a project since Ancient Egypt. Through varied devices and techniques, orthodontics gradually developed to become the sophisticated practice it is today.

😫Poorly aligned teeth and jaws have always affected our ability to chew and speak; it isn't surprising that the history of orthodontics goes back thousands of years!
