On the celebratory occasion of the soft opening of our brand new space in Aberdeen, Alisan Fine Arts is pleased to present A Brush with Nature, our third solo exhibition for the award-winning landscape photographer Stephen King. King‘s work has been described as painterly, a style he cultivates through his use of light, colour and composition. Featuring his recent photographs taken during his travels in Scotland, Iceland, the US and Japan, most of which have never been shown before, this exhibition examines nature’s varied patterns through King’s lens that verge on abstraction and evoke the Chinese ink brush stroke.

Alisan Fine Arts is proud to present our fifth solo exhibition by the late Chinese American artist Chinyee (b. 1929 Nanjing, China). This will be the first solo exhibition of her work since she passed away last June. Chinyee’s work, often been described as “Lyrical Abstraction”, is permeated with influences from both East and West. Her loose, unformulated brushstrokes reflect both Asian brush techniques and years of careful study of modern abstraction. The symphonic, colourful, and optimistic aura of her works is edged with dynamism.

As the Paris Olympics 🏟️ are in full swing, the athletes‘ physical strength, speed and agility, as well as their resilience, are at the center of the global visual culture.

Perhaps it’s the best time to introduce Mak, Hin-yeung Antonio, a celebrated Hong Kong sculptor who offers a unique perspective on the ”human body“ 🧠🤸‍♀️.

Mak Hin-yeung (1951-1994) is best known for his figurative cast bronze sculptures in the hybrid forms of human bodies, horses, tigers and everyday objects. His works challenge traditional artistic narratives with sharp wit and explore the interaction of opposites and contradictory coexistence.

Drawing from classical forms - solemn and grandiose, yet exuding airs of irony, humor and irreverence, Mak‘s oeuvre cannot simply be attributed to the confluence of Eastern and Western cultures, but rather to Hong Kong’s unique culture: a kind of witty, self-deprecating, humorous, rational, practical and cynical identity.

As seen in the works ”Standing, Sitting, Sleeping“, ”Body of a Book“, and ”Dreaming“, Mak Hin-yeung‘s sculptures articulate a return to humanism through the human body, and the particular socio-political situation of colonial Hong Kong. An ingenious fusion of movements, blending reality and dreams, full of tension and room for reverie.

Mak, Hin-yeung Antonio, studied painting and sculpture in England in the 1970s before returning home to teach and create art. He passed away prematurely of cancer in the early 1990s, leaving behind a legacy of captivating, thought-provoking works 🎨.

“Hollis Taggart is pleased to present Asian-American Abstraction: Historic to Contemporary, a group exhibition of 47 historic and contemporary American artists whose oeuvres have been influenced by East Asian artistic traditions. Featuring the work of both Asian-American and American Abstract Expressionist artists, the exhibition traces how the artistic traditions of East Asia have made an indelible mark on American art history. Ranging from 1950s Abstract Expressionist works by artists including Franz Kline, Sam Francis, and Dusti Bongé to recent works by contemporary artists including Ivy Wu, Gwen Yen Chiu, and Hayoon Jay Lee, the exhibition presents an intergenerational dialogue about the lasting international influence of East Asian artistic techniques and philosophies”.

Check out ‘s recent Cathay Stories featuring our artist .

“Watching Wai Pong Yu create his work is like watching a silent ballet. With the grace of a principal dancer, his hand guides a ballpoint pen across a vast sheet of paper. His movements fluid and his focus unwavering, he pauses to punctuate his strokes with deliberate dots before continuing. Wai transforms the act of drawing into an enchanting performance, inviting viewers to join him and witness his artistic vision unfold.”

Our Story

Gallery Hours: Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00. Open to public, Closed Sun & public holidays.

Co-founded in the 1980s by Alice King, Alisan Fine Arts is one of the first professionally run galleries in Hong Kong and has been a pioneer in the field of Chinese contemporary art and New Ink Art. In particular, the gallery focuses on promoting Chinese diaspora artists, mainland Chinese artists and established Hong Kong artists. In 1996 Daphne King joined the gallery and in 2005 was appointed Director, formally taking over operations in 2011. Currently the gallery runs two premises, one in Central, Hong Kong’s business district and the other in Aberdeen, an up and coming art neighborhood. Over the years, the gallery has organised over 100 exhibitions in Hong Kong and abroad.

In 1987 the gallery organised one of the first exhibitions in Hong Kong to showcase contemporary mainland Chinese artists. The landmark exhibition “A State of Transition: Contemporary Paintings from Shanghai” included fourteen artists such as Chen Jialing and Li Shan. Subsequently, in 1989 the gallery presented “Modern Chinese Paintings: A Selection from Beijing, Hangzhou, Sichuan” introducing the works of Peng Xiancheng, Zeng Mi, Nie Ou, Jia Youfu and Jiang Baolin. In 1993, the gallery was the first to organise a commercial exhibition of Zao Wou-ki’s works in Hong Kong and since then has held five more solo exhibitions for the acclaimed artist. Alisan has also organised numerous solo exhibitions for internationally recognised artists Chao Chung-hsiang, Chu Teh-chun, Lui Shou-kwan and Walasse Ting. In 2008, Mrs King guest curated “New Ink Art: Innovation and Beyond” at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, bringing “New Ink Art” to the forefront of the contemporary art world.

A strong believer in cross cultural exchange, Mrs King has made a concerted effort to introduce contemporary Chinese art to the West through art fairs and collaborations with galleries in Europe and the United States, as well as staging exhibitions for Western artists in the East. In 1995, Mrs King was instrumental in bringing French sculptor, Bernar Venet to the Shanghai Museum. The gallery has also been a strong supporter of Le French May since its inception in 1993, an annual arts festival in Hong Kong that brings French culture to the community. For the occasion, the gallery has organised exhibitions for French Chinese artists, including Chu Teh-chun, Gao Xingjian, T’ang Haywen, Yang Jiechang, Zao Wou-ki as well as French artists Marc Chagall, Richard Texier and Fabienne Verdier.

Continued effort has been made for gallery artists to be included in museum collections, such as: The British Museum, London; The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; The Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts; The Hong Kong Museum of Art; M+ of Visual Culture Collection, West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong; The National Art Museum of China, Beijing; The Shanghai Art Museum; The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Shanghai; The China Academy of Art, Hangzhou; The Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung; The Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei; The Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Aarhus, Denmark; The Malmo Konsthall, Sweden. Corporate clients include the Hong Kong MTR, Hong Kong’s Peninsula Hotel, JP Morgan and Beijing’s Oriental Plaza to name a few.
