“SAMO is not dead” and “Tribute to Basquiat” by YAZ The star of the 80’s, Basquiat was one of the most renowned grafitti artists. As some may know, “SAMO” was his pseudonym as he started in graffiti. Soon he transitioned into painting and subsequently became known as Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both paintings by YAZ pays his tribute to the great artist who died young at 27. In “SAMO is not dead”, YAZ plays with wild colors and spontaneous paint strokes. This piece feels like a rebirth of Basquiat’s original “SAMO is not dead” artwork. YAZ uses bold white illustrative marks to reference Basquiat’s style of incorporating “free” figures. “Tribute to Basquiat” does exactly what is says. YAZ impressively uses a bold orange varied black textured marks to capture the dynamicity of the late artist. YAZ gives us a classic line painting, as seen many times in his other works. “I personally feel this is my best work is the series. And I learned again that patience is the key to getting a good photo. I noticed a brown cat sleeping on a pile of cable binders (the black type used for bamboo on scaffolding) and decided to wait until the cat would wake and sit. Then suddenly. A black cat appeared from the back of the store, jumping on to the stack of cable binders and posed for me.” by Marcel Heijnen.

“Times Square Multicolor” - by Yaz

The sky turned dark but New York is still glowing with red, orange, yellow and purple lights. Although the lights are so strong, they are only part of the city. To show the features of New York, YAZ outlined the skyscrapers, cars and advertising hoarding with white colour. There’s a sense of wonderment and mystery created through the various colours in contrast to the concrete city. In this sleepless city, it is difficult to keep up with the pace. So, now more than ever, you need to be world wise.

Hot water and foam, male long legs stretched and relaxing against the white black and white tiles that host a tie hanging, testifying that it is a part of a uniforme, the one which one wears to look professional to others. Sometimes we have to celebrate the afterwork like this, isolated, with a pink soap. Maybe there is a mermaid swimming somewhere not far from here.
