【Cloud Chamber】Prior to Art Labor’s upcoming exhibition ‘Cloud Chamber’ at Para Site, the project was developed through intensive field research and ongoing exchanges in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, which culminated in a series of activations in July 2024 that took place across various locations. In the Central Highlands, the Jrai community and Art Labor (Thao Nguyen Phan, Truong Cong Tung and Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran) engaged in a series of public gatherings, open air exhibitions, and events that included sculpture displays, film screenings, live musical performances, and outdoor installations.

The activations, titled ‘Cloud Chamber: Central Highlands Journey’, are commissioned by Para Site, Hong Kong and T:> Works, Singapore. Among other works on view in ‘Cloud Chamber’ at Para Site will be wood-carved sculptures by Jrai artists Puih Gloh, Puih Han, Rahlan Loh, Rcham Jeh, Romah Aleo, Siu Huel, Siu Kin and Siu Lon, as well as two musical instruments by Jrai musical artist R Cham Tih, all commissioned by Para Site and T:> Works.

【魂霧跡】藝術勞工即將在Para Site開幕的展覽「魂霧跡」衍生自團體在越南中部高原的長期田野研究，以及與當地社群的持續對話。2024年7月，藝術勞工（成員包括潘濤阮、張公松與陳瓊安）在當地與嘉萊社群進行了一系列的公眾聚會、露天展覽與活動，其中包括雕塑展覽、放映會、現場音樂演出以及戶外裝置作品。

這一系列名為「魂霧跡：中部高原旅程」的活動由香港Para Site藝術空間及新加坡T:> Works共同委託。「魂霧跡」的參展作品亦包括嘉萊族藝術家Puih Gloh、Puih Han、Rahlan Loh、Rcham Jeh、Romah Aleo、Siu Huel、Siu Kin與Siu Lon的木雕，以及嘉萊族樂手R Cham Tih製作的樂器，均由Para Site與T:> Works共同委託創作。

Rehearsal: Notes for a Future Project

Artists Michele Chu, Florence Lam, Monique Yim will host a public programme ‘Rehearsal: Notes for a Future Project’ as part of their research residency at Para Site’s tenth-floor annex. The event features work-in-progress materials shared by the artists and a range of participatory happenings. Visitors are invited to engage in a creative exchange with the artists, with all contributions anonymously documented to inspire the artists' upcoming project at Para Site. Since July 2024, the three artists have been conducting field research in and around the space in preparation for an upcoming exhibition curated by Assistant Curator Jessie Kwok.

The exhibition will unpack and reframe the role of the host—whether of a body, a relationship, a home, or a place. During 'Rehearsal', Michele Chu will explore her notion of gastronomic grieving with visitors through tools and writing; Florence Lam invites people of all genders and ages to share their personal stories and reflections on the topic of fertility; Monique Yim will create a series of instruction-based performances that invite visitors to enact individually or collectively.

【Soft breath】On 20 Jun, to celebrate Trevor Yeung’s solo exhibition ‘Soft breath’ which closes this weekend, the artist and collaborators gathered with members of the public within the intimate setting of the exhibition for an evening of happenings, which cohered around the imagery of trees and the role of narrative.

The evening featured soundscape and yehu improvisation by Longman Luk. The soundscape was generated and translated from field recordings of natural sounds, whereas the yehu, a string instrument made from coconut shells, also appropriates nature in its materiality.

Elsewhere, Jaime Chu read from her text ‘Camera Eats First: Before All This’ that reflected upon interplay among amnesia, remembering, and bearing witness, musing on the role memory plays in our perception of time and agency, as well as the ways in which public and private memories intersect.

Wong Sin also gave a reading of her poem ‘Trees of Desires’, allegorically imagining entanglements of desires and loss in a woodland. Beginning her reading by lying down, Wong eventually transitioned into an upright position to signal the trajectory from rest to rebirth.

Audio excerpts from Nicholas Wong’s ‘Gen X Odes’, co-translated by Chen Poyu, stages cruising in a multispecies parkland, disrupting the mundane yet alienated setting, with intimacies at times invisible and conflicted.

【微息】6月20日，在展覽「微息」閉幕前夕，楊沛鏗與客席藝術家、創作者​​邀請了觀眾於展場內相聚。活動包括了一系列演出，圍繞敘事以及樹木的意象展開。

陸朗文為該晚製作了由田野錄音轉化生成的聲景。他亦即興演奏了椰胡，一種以椰殼製成的弦樂器，借用大自然的物質而生成沉厚的音色。

Jaime Chu誦讀了其寫作《相機食先之在此之前》​​。文字穿梭於記憶、遺忘以及見證之間，叩問記憶如何影響時間的流逝以及人的自主性，並窺探公共與私密記憶之間的交匯。

Relationships, systems, and entanglements are among the common themes inquired by 'Soft breath' and 'Sounding Lines', on view simultaneously at Para Site. Both exhibitions stage constellations of works, with imagery q***r and more-than-human at times, for navigations and associations.

We will convene an intertextual dialogue with writer-critic Samwai Lam and writer-scholar Kwai-cheung Lo, moderated by Jessie Kwok, Assistant Curator. Both Lam and Lo are invited to share a text from their oeuvre to read in parallel with each other and against the two exhibitions, in order to further open up thematic discussions around the exhibitions from different perspectives.

Kwai-cheung Lo has written a new piece for the session: taking inspiration from his invitation to Para Site, he reflects upon the myriad ways in which organisms intervene into their surroundings. Samwai Lam has selected an excerpt from her novel about dance, juxtaposing the tension between bodies and minds.

The event will be in Cantonese. No RSVP required. Excerpts of text in Chinese are pictured above.

【Sounding Lines】This Fri (28 Jun) and Sun (30 Jun), join us for the last two sessions of the Replay, Pause, Echo: Sensory Workshops created by Rolly Yang.

The Workshops are a series of guided engagements with Para Site’s current exhibitions, ‘Soft breath’ and ‘Sounding Lines’, inspecting entanglements and interrelations in various means. The sessions inside the exhibition space of ‘Sounding Lines’ focus on improvised body movement. Through acts of navigating, marking, and measuring, we contemplate our habit of setting boundaries and the connections within our interpersonal relationships.

【Offerings for Escalante】Debuted last fall at Para Site, Enzo Camacho and Ami Lien's solo exhibition 'Offerings for Escalante' is currently touring and on view at CCA Berlin until 29 Jun.

Centered on the experimental documentary film 'Langit Lupa (Heaven and Earth)', the exhibition tends to different modes of commemoration and defiance in the wake of a violent massacre befallen the town of Escalante in 1985. The material-based approach employed in the film also extends to other works in the exhibition, including a 16mm animation, a kinetic light installation, as well as a series of drawings on handmade paper. The artists make use of tactile play with foraged botanical materials as a central part of their research process, drawing knowledge from experimentation, out of which a kaleidoscopic aesthetics emerges.

'Offerings for Escalante' emerges from a cross-institutional collaboration among Para Site, Hong Kong; CCA Berlin; Glasgow International; and MoMA PS1.

【獻給Escalante】繼去年秋季於Para Site首度展出，藝術家雙人組Enzo Camacho與連潔的個展「獻給Escalante」現於柏林當代藝術中心巡迴展出至6月29日。

展覽圍繞實驗性紀錄片《天 地》展開，對1985年埃斯卡蘭特大屠殺過後的紀念及抗爭模式發出致意。展覽內的其他作品，包括十六毫米膠片動畫、動態燈光裝置以及一系列手工紙本繪畫，呼應紀錄片內的物料運用與處理手法。藝術家以尋獲的植物原料作為其實踐的重要元素，透過認識物料的觸感及對其作出試驗，形成令人眼花撩亂的美學。

「獻給Escalante」為Para Site與柏林當代藝術中心、格拉斯哥國際雙年展以及MoMA PS1跨機構合作的成果。

【Sounding Lines】The exhibition catalogue of 'Sounding Lines', the first major solo exhibition of Aki Sasamoto in Hong Kong, includes excerpts of correspondence between the artist and curator Billy Tang leading up to the exhibition opening. The musings and dialogue serve as paratext in an experimental way to document the exhibition. Graphic design elements by Fibi Kung include intentionally offset letters and characters that mirror the waves traveling through metal springs inside the exhibition space.

The Workshops are a series of guided engagements with Para Site’s current exhibitions, ‘Soft breath’ and ‘Sounding Lines’, inspecting entanglements and interrelations in various means. Participants are invited to reflect on their personal experiences, take a moment to reset, and interact with the constellations of works using one’s own system of senses. The workshops unfold a unique dialogue with each exhibition.

This session will be conducted in English.

《光明卻沒有背離黑暗》的主題說穿了，其實是描述在追求「臣服」間的掙扎，又或，在自我審問中頃刻出現的澄明之境。不求超脫，就讓時間流逝，一個階段終結，又再日以繼夜、夜以繼日延續開去。隨書附送《飛行備忘》 及《光明卻沒有背離黑暗》兩個影像作品的文本，以及由藝術家簽名的限量版收藏級印相。

勞麗麗生於香港，現為香港城市大學創意媒體學院博士候選人。她是一位「退役」旅遊記者，現專注於大自然生態相關藝術創作。主要研究課題跟食物、農耕、醞釀、監視、冥想等相關。作品獲希克藏品及美國三藩市亞洲藝術博物館收藏。

【New release】Lo Lai Lai Natalie, 'As Shards of Dawn Shot Through the Dark', 2024

'As Shards of Dawn Shot Though the Dark' meditates on the journey towards 'surrender' and the momentary emergence of clarity therein. Without seeking transcendence, let time pass, as one phase comes to an end, and another continues day and night, night and day. The catalogue comes with a limited edition print signed by the artist, and two booklets featuring scripts of 'A Messenger - Passerby in Our Battlefields' and 'As Shards of Dawn Shot Through the Dark'.

Lo Lai Lai Natalie was born in Hong Kong. She is currently a PhD candidate at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. Lai Lai is a former travel journalist. She finds her interests in food, farming, fermentation, surveillance, and meditation. Her artworks are part of collector Dr Uli Sigg's private collection and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.

【Sounding Lines】On 28 Mar, Aki Sasamoto staged the second of her performances commissioned for the exhibition 'Sounding Lines' for an audience of over 400, in a VIP brunch co-hosted by Para Site, ArtReview and Shanghai Tang. The performance serves to activate and mobilise the large-scale site-specific installation in Para Site's 22/F space.

We're excited to share that Trevor Yeung's solo exhibition 'Soft breath' will now have an extended run on Para Site's 10/F annex through 30 Jun 2024.

Co-commissioned in partnership with Gasworks, London, and Aranya Art Center, Qinhuangdao, the exhibition takes q***r experiences that have shaped multi-species entanglements as a starting point to evoke the fluid interplay between night and day, public and private life, and hidden and visible desires.

「作為移民工，我們說的告別話有很多種。我們告別家人、告別家園、告別我們曾經生活過的生活，有時甚至包括我們現在居住的地方。在這種情況下，我們通常會說一句祝福的說話，希望對方保重，身心安康。這個字詞『Ingat』為他加祿語（Tagalog），中文可以解作『保重』，或者是『注意身體』。『Ingat』的意義在於我們對他人的祝福和關懷。」

【Sounding Lines】Walking through 'Sounding Lines', Aki Sasamoto's first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, the visitor will notice various traces the artist has left in the exhibition space from her commissioned performance. Among these, translucent window panes in various blue shades acted as literal drawing boards for the artist to delineate her reflections on proximity and distance, a dichotomy—or the blurring thereof—that animates various threads of the exhibition dialogue.

【測深線】觀眾在參觀笹本晃的首場香港個展「測深線」時，會留意到藝術家在展場中留下的種種蛛絲馬跡。其中，深淺各異的藍色半透明窗板在藝術家的委託行為演出內，成為了藝術家的畫板。藝術家在窗板上記下了其對親疏二元，以及其之間模糊的邊界作下的如意識流般的筆記、草圖。現時，這些即興的想法遺留於展場內，成為梳理展覽語彙的重要線索。

【Soft breath】A set of unassuming louvre closet doors guards one corner of Trevor Yeung's exhibition 'Soft breath'. The curious passerby who pauses to take a peek behind the slats likely won't glimpse anything—but they will smell something. For 'Silent Sweat (Closeted)' (2024), Yeung hid worn cotton shirts behind a closet. The worn shirts then discreetly diffuses their pheromone-laden scents into the exhibition, beckoning at the olfactively discerning visitor. Borrowing from the imagery of the closet, the installation is a subtle homage to the indelibility of suppressed desires.

【微息】在楊沛鏗個展「微息」的一角靜靜佇立着一扇百葉櫃門。好奇的觀眾假若嘗試透過櫃門的縫隙窺探，可能什麼都看不見，但會聞到櫃內發出的隱約氣味。在製作裝置《靜汗（櫃內）》（2024年）時，藝術家把穿着過的棉襯衫藏匿於櫃內，而這些襯衫則在展場內散播淡淡的汗味，挑逗嗅覺敏銳的觀眾。藉「衣櫃」的意涵，此裝置是對受遏止卻不可被扼殺慾望的含蓄致敬。

【New arrivals】She Told Me to Head to the Sea: A Children's Book (2024) by Vaevae Chan

Between 2018-2021, Vaevae Chan built a place to hide away. Seeking catharsis from grief and internal conflict as a result of personal and political circumstances, she decided to isolate herself in a self-made cave in a San Po Kong industrial building. The result of this period is an immersive installation and exhibition space that drew visitors into the artist’s space of inner transformation.

This book commemorates the excavation of the Juen Juen Gung Cave and its inaugural exhibition 'She Told Me to Head to the Sea'. The artist looks back and analyses how bereavement is overcome, retelling her episode of PTSD in the form of a naive children's tale.
