Bantry Walking Festival is coming up fast! Only 2 weeks to go!

Remember: All walks depart from Bantry Community Tourist Office where you register and sign in!
A & B Walks will be departing at 10am sharp, with busses provided to and from the walks!
Whiddy Walks leave from the Main Pier (by Maxol and Bantry Marina) on the 11am Ferry.
You must sign in at the Tourist Office before making your way down!

Bantry Walking Festival is returning this June Bank Holiday Weekend 2023 from Fri 2nd-Sun 4th June. With a launch on Friday in Bantry Community Tourist Office, including a Historical Walk of Bantry Town!

This year’s festival will follow the same format as last year with an A walk Saturday, B walk Sunday and Whiddy Island C walks on both days! All walks leave from Bantry Community Tourist Office on Wolfe Tone Square (plenty of parking in the Town Centre) and buses are provided to and from the A & B walks.

Pre-booking is essential as places are limited and can be booked via EventBrite. Proper footwear (Boots only) and weather gear is essential, our safety officers will be checking before setting off!

Due to the demand for this walk last year we will be visiting Gougane Barra once again with a 5 hour hike, taking us up to 566m in elevation on Saturday. Our B walk will take in Cahergal on The Sheep’s Head Peninsula on Sunday

Fri 3rd June – Historical Walk of Bantry Town @6:30pm

Saturday A Walk – Gougane Barra – Leaving 10am Sharp
Starting at the church in Gougane Barra we hike along the Beara/Brefini Way as far as Lough Fada. We take in the breathtaking views of Gougane valley and Lake. We hike to Conigar mountain 566 m. with panoramic views over Bantry Bay, West Cork and close by the Borlin Valley and Cnoc Bui. From Conigar we loop around to Bealisk Mt 537 m. before descending to the forest track in Gougane Valley and back to the Church
Difficulty: Moderate to high level of fitness.
Duration: 4.5-5 hrs.
Equipment: hiking boots and rain gear essential.

Sunday B Walk – Sheeps Head Peninsula – Leaving 10am Sharp
Our Sheep Head Walk is starting off from the Black Gate on the south side of the peninsula. We will travel up and over the ridge to the north side over looking Bantry Bay. Making our way out west to the lighthouse. We will return east along the ridge overlooking Dunmanus Bay towards the Mizen Peninsula. Optional endings at the Café Cupan Tae or you can continue back to The Black Gate completing the loop.
Difficulty: Moderate to high level of fitness.
Approx Time: 4.5-5 hrs
Equipment: hiking boots and rain gear essential.

Sat & Sun – Whiddy Walks – Leaving 11am
Take a boat trip out to one of West Cork’s islands! On Whiddy, we’ll explore historical sites from the ruin of O’Sullivan Bere’s castle, to deserted English gun batteries, and a World War One seaplane base, on an absorbing and informative tour. The walk encompasses a variety of terrains from soft fields to rocky beaches and appropriate footwear is required to prevent discomfort.
The island, which currently has a population of around 20 people during the winter months, is about 5.6km long and 2.4km wide, and the walk takes about 3 hrs in total. Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes if the weather takes a turn and you wish to remain on the island after the walk!
The cost of this walk includes ferry transfers to and from the island, courtesy of Whiddy Island Ferries.

Registration will open on Monday 11th April at 10am.

Those who deferred their 2020 entry are automatically entered into this years event.
