đ Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness â the stuff weâre all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didnât find what I was looking for.â

Welcome to the world of Sam and Charlie in Breaking, a groundbreaking first play by Amy Kidd.
Fishambleâs world premiere of Breaking asks fascinating and profound questions about how we navigate a world without any simple answers.
Only two characters appear â Sam and Charlie â played by an ensemble cast. When scenes are replayed in different combinations, do we interpret them differently?
Does gender, sexuality, age or ethnicity alter our perception? What does that say about how we perceive the world? How do we find solid ground to judge?

âRelationships are complicated. Even the happiest and healthiest relationships have their hard moments and our partners, like our parents, are privy to the best and worst parts of us.
Sadly, statistics show us that abuse in relationships is on the rise - or, at least, the number of people reporting to charities and helplines is rising annually - and it can affect us all.
Unhealthy or abusive behaviours can creep into relationships regardless of our age, gender, race, class or sexual-orientation and these behaviours can cover a wide spectrum; financial, emotional, physical, sexual and more.
Yes, abuse is a big word. Itâs a hard word. âAbusedâ or âabuserâ are words that we donât want attached to ourselves or our relationships.
Looking on from the outside, it might feel easy to ask âwhy would you stay?â, from the inside another question might be âhow did we get here?â. This was one of my central questions when I began to write âBreakingâ.
Patterns emerge in retrospect and moments that might seem insignificant at the time, micro-acceptances of behaviours, comments or dynamics, might eventually pave the way towards one accepting the unacceptable.
I am beyond grateful to Fishamble for producing âBreakingâ and to Jim, Gavin, Laura, the actors, the designers and the whole team for breathing life into this play and going on this journey with me. I couldnât wish for a better team of collaborators to explore these big questions with and hopefully, together, we are making a meaningful contribution to this conversation.â
