Two trees and two houses. Not the actual title but it’ll do for now. Just one of many proofs I made of this.
First plate for a recently completed etching 12x13cm. I spattered bitumen from a paintbrush which kept the white dots. For those of you who haven’t seen the finished print how do you think this one is going to turn out?
“Gas Lights” Aquatint and carborundum. 26x20cm, €220. Was trying to get the colours right for the road part.
“Violet Light”, colour etching, 12x13cm, €150. A simple image of a view from my window at night.
I was delighted today to see that my print “Border Kontrol” is displayed in the front window of HALFTONE at the Library Project, Temple Bar, Dublin. I’m not sure if people passing realise that everything inside on the walls is actually for sale? Tickled pink so I am!

Printing “Homework” one plate after another.
I got my piece “Burgas Park” into the Royal Ulster Academy summer (annual) show this year. Lots of other people from Graphic Studio Dublin got in too.
A fingerprint will affect how an aquatint performs in the acid. You don’t want the acid getting under your aquatint and biting in unwanted areas. That’s why good degreasing is crucial.
Here is a short video of the things needed to degrease a plate before putting an aquatint on. This time I’m going to use “Elbow Grease” which the the former print technician (Colette)in NCAD told me about. I got this stuff in the Euro shop for €1.50. I was advised to use a household paintbrush.
“Homework” the first plate going through the press. A light lilac in the corner and a warm orange in the middle. Their faces are burnished out here so that this orange doesn’t come through the next two plate colours.
“Homework” three plate colour etching. Not quite finished yet. Made for the upcoming exhibition “Returning Home” in collaboration with the Simon community at CHQ Dublin from Oct 27 to Nov 5.
“Homework” this is after I scratched the two figures Miro and Dilyana onto the plate and printed it in just black.
“The Way Home” Etching
“Parallel lines” Etching
“Frontlines” colour etching
“In the air” colour etching
“Safe House” Etching. Image 12x13cm
“Border Kontrol” Etching. Image size 25x37cm
“Homework” here is the key plate with Miro and Dilyana scratched into the copper. Around it are an assortment of tools used for the etching process. Scribe, burnishes, a thread counter (magnifier), roulettes.
“Homework” I just transferred a drawing of Miro onto the copper plate so that I can scratch this image on the plate, also referred to as “Drypoint”. The word “dry” refers to the fact that nothing wet (like acid) is used to make the marks. Later I will add Dilyana to the plate as well.
“Homework” 1st, 2nd and 3rd proofs lined up. Guess which colours I went with?
“Homework” And this is the last plate with colours I didn’t end up using in the final print. Bit more to go.
