This week, David McGovern, current Six in the Attic artist and lecturer at University of Arts London, gave a Moving Images Workshop with his colleagues, with facilitator Lian Bell.
David explained the process and aims of this workshop, 'Moving image is a powerful tool for self-inquiry. Much like sketching, poetry, or simply pacing the room, we can use this discipline for ideation and expression.
We begin by using the camera to simply observe and notice - the essence of documentary making. Following this, we will become more reflective and experimental with our approach. We will discuss pace, framing and problem solving.'
This session was certainly a journey of self-discovery and everyone got so much out of the experience!
Thank you to David for so generously sharing this workshop with your colleagues.

Irish Theatre Institute is extremely proud and privileged to launch the new research report AMPLIFY: A Call For Transformative Action, as part of the Safe to Create programme, on Wednesday 3 July at Project Arts Centre, joined by an incredible line-up of artists: Emma Dabiri, Alan James Burns, Shane Michael Byrne (supported by Caroline Loughman), Oein DeBhairduin, Farah Elle, FELISPEAKS, Iarlaith Ní Fheorais, Oonagh Murphy, Lianne Quigley and Amahra Spence. The launch event was excellently hosted by Chandrika Narayanan-Mohan and ISL interpreted by Caoimhe Coburn Gray and Shelley Gibson.
The research findings were presented by the Director of Irish Theatre Institute, Niamh O’Donnell, and Dr Ciara L Murphy, who led the research project with indefatigable commitment, forensic attention to detail, and care (supported by the AMPLIFY Research Team; Rachel Parry, Dr Sarah Hoover, Conall Ó Duibhir and Dr Michael Lydon, with support from Gráinne Pollak, Olwen Dawe, Keishia Taylor, and Dr Brenda Donohue).
We would like to thank everyone who joined us on the day and engaged with the findings presented.
More importantly though, the research wouldn't have been possible without the 58 disabled, ethnically & racially minoritised, and LGBTQIA+ artists and arts workers, and 16 consulting organisations, who generously gave of their time, openness, honesty, expertise and trust, to ensure that this research was created and undertaken with marginalised voices at the forefront of each stage of the work. We look forward to continuing with many of these brilliant, wise, and talented artists and arts workers to propel the recommendations forward into the transformative action needed now.
Finally, we want to thank Alphabet Soup’s Siobhan Griffin who created our stunning AMPLIFY design.
AMPLIFY is a call to action for everyone in the arts and creative sectors to work together to create meaningful change, ensuring all artists and arts workers can thrive in an inclusive, vibrant and equitable environment.

The launch of the research findings of AMPLIFY: A Call for Transformative Action, Wed 3 July 2024.
Findings from the recently released research report AMPLIFY: A Call for Transformative Action, commissioned by Irish Theatre Institute as part of the Safe to Create programme, has highlighted that the burden of labour to improve conditions for minoritised artists and arts workers is falling on the artists and arts workers themselves, whereas across all categories the power to enact meaningful change is in the hands of employers and organisations.
