La Grande Illusion | Brian Maguire at Hugh Lane Gallery: ,

03/10/2024 - 23/03/2025 -

Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square, Dublin 1

Entitled “La Grande Illusion” the exhibition is structured and distilled in ways that reveal how the artist has represented the fragility of human rights and how he has persistently responded to societal injustices and their legacies. Focusing on a period of intense productivity for the artist, 2007–2024, it appraises his activism in human rights and his efforts to document the shape-shifting nature of war with its far-reaching impact on the poor and our environment.

Maguire presents an expanded view of war- seen as a constant cycle of corrupted power and death – it encompasses capital, class, gender, and post-colonial legacies. Intimate and uncompromising, his paintings form a demand for social justice and are an act of solidarity with families and communities. The exhibition will draw on seven pioneering and interconnected bodies of work, with works from Hugh Lane Gallery and Crawford art Gallery collections alongside works from private collections including the Tia Collection, Santa Fe. These include paintings from projects in Juárez, Mexico (2012–15), the Mediterranean (2016), Aleppo (2017), South Sudan (2018), the Amazon (2022), Arizona (2022) and Brazil (2022-23)

Testimony is integral to understanding violence, human rights violations and state abuse.

In turning towards the plight of those erased by media or state institutions, the artist reminds us why painting matters. “In painting, ‘the invisible becomes visible’, he explains. It is a transformative frame, placing the experiences you encounter on the doorstep of power and in a continuum with history, mythology and the tragedies of existence.” Like education for Paulo Freire, art for Maguire is a radical process of passion and indignation, which carries the potential of alternative futures. “the image carries the present, the medium carries the hope” says Maguire and expands by referring to the domains of loss as ‘the perpetrators of the injustice are worldwide and singular and that’s what makes the stories the same’.

This exhibition is co-curated by Michael Dempsey, Head of Exhibitions and Barbara Dawson Director, Hugh Lane Gallery.

La Grande Illusion will be accompanied by a catalogue featuring illuminating essays by Lucy Cotter, Michael Dempsey, Marc Donnadieu and Christian Viveros Faune, that contextualise the exhibition and the environment in which it is created.

Admission Free. All Welcome.

The exhibition opens in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square, Dublin on 3 October 2024 and will run until 23 March 2025.

Bounce Arts Festival 2024 | Belfast and Derry~Londonderry: ,

04/10/2024 - 06/10/2024 -

Various, Belfast, & Derry~Londonderry

Bounce Arts Festival is testament to the bold belief in our artists with disabilities, d/Deaf artists and neurodivergent artists as uniquely creative, enriching and diverse. All our artists self declare as d/Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent; we’re disabled-led, and while that may go without saying—I think it still needs to be proudly stated. This is a festival created by and for disabled, d/Deaf and neurodivergent people.

Transcending barriers, celebrating ability and disability; disturbing myths and illuminating the creative practice of disabled artists on a professional platform: Bounce is our showcase where every aspect of diverse identity is celebrated.

This year Bounce is happening in Belfast and Derry~Londonderry. As for many in the arts sector, our budgets remain tight. While we don’t compromise on quality or on accessibility, we have scaled back to provide the best festival in a more focused way. This year we have a range of ticket prices for events, gorgeous merchandise, and new donation stations. If you like what we do, we hope you will support us in whatever way you can.

Fieldwork with Mainie and Albrecht | Yanny Petters at Olivier Cornet Gallery: ,

06/10/2024 - 10/11/2024 -

Olivier Cornet Gallery, 3 Great Denmark Street, Dublin 1

'Fieldwork with Mainie and Albrecht'
Twelve Irish habitats in homage to the artists who have inspired me.

A solo exhibition by YANNY PETTERS

6 October to 10 November 2024
Official opening: Sunday 6 October 2024, 3:00pm

Guest speaker: Dr Éimear O'Connor (RHA, HRUA, BA, MBA, PhD), Director of Collections and Access at the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by Dr Hilary Pyle.

The show will run in our main exhibition space until 10 November 2024.
The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present Yanny Petters's new solo exhibition.

The artist's work has joined important public collections in recent years such as the National Gallery of Ireland with the work The Plants We Played With, the National Museum of Ireland with Hand Fan for Habitats and the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art in Kew with the work Three trees; Blackthorn, Rowan, Hawthorn. The illustrious London gallery boasts 6 works by the artist in their collection.

'The Plants We Played With' currently features in a group show 'In Real Life' at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin'

About Fieldwork with Mainie and Albrecht at the Olivier Cornet Gallery:

In creating this body of work Yanny has immersed herself in the forms and colours which draw her eye to the many wild habitats of the Irish landscape. Her raison d'être is drawing our attention to the wonders and treasures around us.

While this new body of work is primarily about wild habitats, Yanny explores a common thread in her work over the last forty years with the inspiration she has drawn from the artists and creators she has admired since childhood.

Intrigued by the innate visual and emotional common ground between the elements of design and practice of these artists and the forms, colours and 'design' in nature Yanny has immersed herself in each artwork, discovering there a deeply familiar and fascinating link.

While researching each habitat from seashore to mountain bog, and musing over how the particular elements are reflected in the work of each old master, Yanny found that the plants' particular nature is reflected in the individual styles of masters such as Mainie Jellet, Albrecht Dürer, Harry Clarke, Gustav Klimt, William Morris and the Moghul artists of ancient India. It is as if there is a natural association between Yanny's perception of each habitat and the artist to whom she pays homage.

The exhibition includes twelve carefully considered artworks of habitats reflecting Yanny's own unique practice. All the pieces are reverse painted on glass in a technique known as Verre Eglomisé which Yanny has developed since she was introduced to it in the 1980s while training as a signwriter.

Her intention as ever is to make visible that which we are inclined to dismiss - by rendering it precious. Urbanisation has made us become more removed from our natural heritage, so Yanny endeavours to open our eyes to the wonders around us so we may become enthused to protect our environment in this time of climate change.

A TOTAL TRANSFORMATION IS NEEDED is a group show and a holler into the ether. In this exhibition of new and reconfigured work, three artists from across the Black Atlantic—Clodagh Boyce (Ireland/USA), Jordan/Martin Hell (UK/USA), and Isaac Harris (Scotland/USA)—meet in Dublin, to engage in a dialogue. This show brings focus to the practice of artists who write, suggesting that language creates its own intangible structures: foundations to build upon or frameworks to break down.

Artist Statements:

Clodagh Assata Boyce is a Trini-Irish curator and artist working between Belfast and Dublin. They employ gathering as artistic practice to explore nationhood and migration.

Isaac Harris is a writer and artist from Virginia whose practice interrogates cultural and historical narratives through fiction. Their work explores themes of memory, the absurdity of Black identity, and the fluidity of power, focusing on narratives set in and around Virginia and the greater Black diaspora in the Atlantic world. Isaac is the author of Blaxploitation Burner Tape (Waterwings Press, 2023) and Ghetty Gospel (Ethel Zine, 2021, US; Peanut Press, 2021, Scotland). Recent work has appeared in Deleuzine (2023) and in Francis Jones and Josie Perry’s The Thieves, Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow (2024). Isaac holds a degree in Linguistics and History from the University of Edinburgh and currently resides in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia.

Jordan/Martin Hell is a Black trans(2s) artist, writer, & scholar. They are the author of CONSTANT VIOLINS (Arcadia Missa, 2021) & AUTOLINGO DIDACTICA (Monitor Press, 2023) Their writing has been internationally published in interdisciplinary press, projects, & initiatives by Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim (DE), Arcadia Missa Gallery & Publishing (UK), Monitor Books (UK), Real Review (UK), Soft Opening (UK), Mousse Magazine (DE), 032c (DE), Rosie’s Disobedient Press (UK), Sticky Fingers Publishing (UK), The Bittersweet Review (UK), Pratt Institute’s The Felt (US), & others. He studied at Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule (DE) & Cooper Union School of Art (US). Currently, he is a doctoral candidate in the School of English & Drama at Queen Mary University of London. Her thesis project BLACK DEVIATIONS, ARCHIVAL SPECULATIVITIES: BLACK FEMINIST PRACTICE-LED RESEARCH IN MID-LATE 20TH CENTURY LITERATURE & PERFORMANCE is an interdisciplinary global archive of speculative research & practice across experimental painting, q***r/trans womanist theology, film, meditation/monasticism/q***r spiritual separatism, p**n, translation, transcription, music, archive, hybrid text & novellas, sculpture, fashion, & performance. Their work has been shown internationally at Soft Opening (UK), Tokyo Arts & Space (JP), Sadie Coles (UK), Emanuel Layr, (EU), Wexner Center for the Arts (US), Goethe Institut Irland (EU), Performance Space NY (US), Sophiensæle (DE), Callie’s (DE), La MaMa Theater & Galleria (US), Ars Nova (US) & more.

Beulah Ezeugo is an artist & curator who works with others against the rapid tightening and regularisation of borders. Her practice engages with postcolonial geographies & memory and expands outwards through exhibition-making, programming, & publication. As an independent curator, she is interested in supporting collaborative & research-led artists’ practices. Beulah is currently a research associate at CCA Derry~Londonderry, and one-half of the collective Éireann & I Archive, a migrant memory project.

Acoustics of Resistance | Mikhail Karikis at Void Art Centre: ,

05/10/2024 - 07/12/2024 - 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Void Art Centre, 10 Waterloo Place, Derry

The team at Void Art Centre are delighted to welcome Mikhail Karikis to exhibit his project Acoustics of Resistance.

What artistic responses can we invent in the face of climate collapse to inspire alternative visions to the dominant apocalyptic climate discourse? How can we collectively tune into the sonorities of socio-political change and ecology? Acoustics of Resistance is a multi-media project comprising of works that collectively tune into the sonorities of socio-political change and ecology. It rejoices in the transformative and healing powers of listening and sound-making while declaring that changing the course of climate change is in our hands and lies on humans learning the language of nature.

Surging Seas and The Weather Orchestra are two installations that approach the theme of climate change from the perspectives of scientific data, collective and individual emotional response, speculative thinking and sounding. They are an ode to the elements, expressing our deep relationship and entanglement with the weather and celebrating our connection to the atmosphere and the earth. Surging Seas comprises video, a textile work references thermal maps and a display of placards with futurological flood maps. The Weather Orchestra was created with diverse performers from different climes and takes the form of multi-channel video installation with surround sound. The installation transforms the gallery space into an indoor weather system generated through sound vibration and singing. Three projections feature Iberian female musicians performing on instruments and analogue noise machines designed to imitate the sounds of natural phenomena. From the old wind machine to the ancient Latin American ceremonial rain stick, ocean drums, aqua-phones and thunder sheets generate sounds that allude to the forces and magnificence of nature. In the middle of this soundscape and swept up by the noise, human voices burst with folk songs from different cultures as a reservoir of knowledge and connection with nature, expressing joy, respect, fear and wonder toward all elements surrounding us. In his mourning song, a Syrian refugee asks the rain to become 'mute' in his dedication to friends and family he lost at sea on their way to Greece. A Danish folk singer recalls an ancient nordic song asking the sun to come and warm the seeds to sprout. A Madeiran islander begs the fog to clear because it threatens his life. A Portuguese singer sings an ancient pagan-christian prayer to Santa Barbara requesting her to calm the tempest at sea.

Biography

Mikhail Karikis is a Greek-British artist working with moving image, sound, performance and other media. Through collaborations with individuals and/or communities located beyond the circles of contemporary art, and in recent years with children, refugees, support workers and people with disabilities, he develops socially embedded projects that prompt an activist imaginary and rouse the potential to invent hopeful and sustainable futures. Focusing on listening as an artistic methodology, and the voice as a socio-political agent he centers on themes of environmental and social justice. His projects highlight alternative modes of action and solidarity, while nurturing critical attention, dignity and care.

Karikis exhibits internationally. In his most recent work for the stage, ‘Universe of Solutions’, he was artistic director for UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network inaugural cultural event for which he created a performance with 150 young people. Group exhibitions include 54th Venice Biennale, (2011), IT; Manifesta 9, Ghenk, (2012); 19th Biennale of Sydney, (2014); Kochi-Muziris Biennale, IN, (2016); MediaCity Seoul, KR (2015); British Art Show 8 (2016-7); 2nd Riga International Biennale of Contemporary Art, LV (2020), 2nd Saitama Triennale (2024), JP and others.

Crossing the Park | Michael Hanna at CCA Derry~Lononderry: ,

05/10/2024 - 21/12/2024 -

CCA Derry~Londonderry, 10–12 Artillery St, Derry-Londonderry

CCA Derry~Londonderry is delighted to present a solo exhibition of artist Michael Hanna’s long term project Crossing the Park.

In Crossing the Park, Michael Hanna takes himself as the subject in a project that sees the artist attempt to change his deep-set allegiance from Everton Football Club to their arch rivals, Liverpool. This process, which has taken place across the past three years, highlights the strong negative social pressures against such a change, as historically Northern Irish football fans choose an English team to support for life when they're young. By swapping allegiances, Michael explores urgent questions surrounding loyalism, tribalism, empathy and identity, and investigates the psychology of group behaviour.

The project has developed over the years and the exhibition includes filmed conversations with the artist. Michael talks with a psychologist about group behaviours and how to change, and also with Liverpool taxi drivers on friends, family and football fandom. Central to the exhibition is a text outlining seven activities based on social psychological theory and research which will help to promote affinity with Liverpool Football Club and reduce affinity with Everton developed by Professor Rhiannon Turner from Queen’s University Belfast. These activities have informed the actions and works in the rest of the exhibition as he continues his pursuit of becoming a Liverpool Football Club supporter.

Crossing the Park is commissioned by CCA Derry~Londonderry, Centre Culturel Irlandais and F.E. McWilliam Gallery. It is supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's Commissioning Programme, Derry City & Strabane District Council, An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and the Elephant Trust.

REHEARSING BODIES | Group Exhibition at CCA Derry~Lononderry: ,

05/10/2024 - 05/11/2024 -

CCA Derry~Londonderry, 10–12 Artillery St, Derry-Londonderry

REHEARSING BODIES is an exhibition curated by Lucy Grubb taking over CCA’s bathroom with artworks by Lucie McLaughlin, Ebun Sodipo and Francis Whorrall-Campbell. The exhibition reimagines the WC as a space for remaking, practising and rehearsing. Bringing together collage, drawing, and writing, this exhibition interrogates ideas of spatial justice while exploring how we continuously practise existing through rehearsing movement, reclaiming autonomy, and navigating the politics of visibility.

The starting point for REHEARSING BODIES draws from José Esteban Muñoz's concept of the stage as a “space of potentiality”, considering how we can rehearse, fail, and practise our future selves. In the context of social and political change, this exhibition aims to highlight how systems have historically denied affordable housing, jobs, and pleasure to marginalised bodies while suggesting ways we might remake ourselves in response.

The works by the artists inhabit the bathroom in fragmented, layered forms, echoing the disjointed, nonlinear experience of q***r life and navigating how we approach the city. By drawing parallels between the hidden, transient nature of q***r bodies in urban spaces, the works occupy and reimagine the toilet as a site of both visibility and resistance. This space becomes a site where q***rness can be pieced together, claimed, and reimagined.

This project has been supported by Centre for Contemporary Art, Derry~Lononderry, Eastside Projects, Birmingham, and Jerwood Foundation.

Closing Saturday Oct 26th
Two Person exhibition by Kathryn Maguire & Karen Webster
A collection of artwork created during the Primary Colours Art Education Residency 2024
The exhibition is run and funded by Sligo County Council Arts Service and the Arts Council of Ireland

Artists bio
Kathryn Maguire is a visual artist and educator whose practice incorporates socially engaged projects and environmental awareness projects. She creates sculptural installations and interventions, using a diverse range of materials and weaving her visual arts practice with educational facilitation methods, to explore ideas with communities and within the gallery space. Currently, her work is focused on geomythology and geology and landscape myths.
https://www.kathrynmaguire.net/

Karen Webster is an artist and educator working in the field (literally!) of art and ecology since the early 2000's.
Her practice is a combination of time spent wandering and wondering in the company of the more than human world, research, play and making. She is driven by curiosity and sees art making as a way of bringing back to life our intimate and innate relationship with the rest of the living world.
This body of work has been inspired by the story of Giolla Bríd and the Seaweed and is a varied collection of paintings, seaweed charcoal and ink drawings, seaweed papers and sculptural pieces.
It explores how creating with natural materials can nurture a sense of reverence towards the living world, moving us away from viewing nature as a resource and restoring a way of seeing nature not for what it can produce but to celebrate it for what it is.

Tipperary Landscapes | David Flood at and 7s Gallery: ,

05/10/2024 - 12/10/2024 - 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

& 7s Gallery, 6 Davis Street, Tipperary Town

Tipperary Landscapes: David Flood's Photography Exhibition Explores the Essence of Landscape

"Tipperary Landscapes", a captivating photography exhibition by Tipperary native David Flood, opens at the & 7s Gallery on Saturday, October 5th. Running from October 5th to 12th at 6 Davis St., Tipperary Town, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the intricate relationship between landscape, memory, and identity.

In this thought-provoking showcase, Flood explores the concept of landscape as a phenomenon constructed both physically and immaterially. He delves into how our collective and personal experiences shape the way we perceive the lands we inhabit. Drawing from the term's origins in the late 16th century, when "landscape" referred to a painting of the land, Flood examines its evolution into an everyday experience that transcends mere representation.

The exhibition is made possible through the support of the Tipperary Artists’ Award, Creative Places Tipperary Town, and & 7s Gallery.

Mirage | Vincent Sheridan at SO Fine Art Editions: ,

05/10/2024 - 26/10/2024 - 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

SO Fine Art Editions, 2nd Floor Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, 59 South William Street

SO Fine Art Editions are delighted to present Mirage, a solo exhibition by Vincent Sheridan.
Birds, particularly crows and starlings, continue to be a central focus in Vincent Sheridan ‘s art practice. Their complex social behaviour, mesmerizing flight dynamics, and the intricate, almost subliminal 'brushstroke' patterns they create in the sky offer a profound source of inspiration. These avian subjects are not mere depictions of wildlife but serve as a mirror to human group dynamics, modes of communication, and social interactions.
Through his work, he strives to explore and reflect the intricate dance of connection, coordination, and communal effort seen in both avian and human societies.

Sheridan’s images aim to capture the essence of these birds in flight, transforming their movements into a visual symphony that speaks to the core of social existence. The way crows and starlings interact—whether in tight-knit flocks or through their intricate vocal communications—reveals a world of cooperation and conflict, order and chaos, much like our own human experiences. By observing these birds, he finds parallels to our own social structures, seeing in their aerial formations a reflection of our community gatherings, dispersals, and the ebb and flow of collective behaviour.

In this new series of work, Sheridan has expanded his exploration of these themes by employing a blend of traditional printmaking techniques combined with technological methods. This approach allows him to form new, dynamic series that push the boundaries of how we perceive both art and nature. Traditional techniques combined with technological innovations enable him to delve deeper into the patterns and rhythms of flight, using tools like digital mapping and motion capture to reveal the hidden structures within their movements.
This fusion of methodologies not only enhances the visual impact of his work but also opens up new avenues for understanding and interpreting the behaviours of crows, starlings, and, by extension, ourselves. The resulting pieces are not static representations but living, breathing portrayals of motion and interaction, inviting viewers to see the world through a different lens. They challenge us to consider the parallels between avian and human societies, prompting a reflection on our own communal behaviours and the invisible threads that bind us together.
Sheridan seeks to celebrate the beauty and complexity of birds in flight, while simultaneously offering a commentary on the nature of social interaction. Through this ongoing exploration, his hope is to inspire a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of life, encouraging a more mindful and empathetic engagement with the world around us.

Our Story

Visual Artists Ireland is the current trading name of the Sculptors’ Society of Ireland. The Sculptors’ Society of Ireland was established in 1980. It was initially set up to improve the professional standing of sculptors, raise the profile of sculpture and develop the quality and scope of commissioning procedures and opportunities. As one founding member succinctly described it – “to make the country see sculpture as part of everyday living”.

In addressing these needs the Society initiated sculpture symposia and thus provided opportunities for sculptors to work with new materials, new contexts and fundamentally, to engage in dialogue with their peers. Exhibitions and conferences likewise provided much needed platforms for contemporary Irish sculpture, offering to critically appraise and encourage the development of the art form in Ireland. The SSI ‘Newsletter’ offered artists access to information and a forum for discussion around their practice.

The Society was also instrumental in facilitating the 1988 implementation of Percent for Art legislation in the Ireland, developed codes of practice for the commissioning of public art and led by example by taking on the management of commissions.

Since its inception the Sculptors’ Society encouraged the broadest possible definition of sculptural practice encompassing object making, lens-based media, digital arts, installation and performance. This open and inclusive policy as well as an enhanced programme of services and resources led to a significant increase in membership in the years following the demise of the Artists Association of Ireland in 2002.
