This pastel, which was bequeathed to Hugh Lane Gallery in 2021, is a rare survivor of William Butler Yeats’ paintings and drawings. While Yeats devoted himself to poetry, he had studied art at the Metropolitan School of Art and the Royal Hibernian Academy School in Dublin. The scene shows the flooded lake at Coole, County Galway, the home of Lady Gregory.

Today marks a 100 years since William Butler Yeats was honoured with a Nobel Prize in Literature, ‘for his always inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation’.

Hugh Lane’s inner circle of artists and writers friends, which William Yeats was part of, was of great support and inspiration for Lane to build a collection of modern art. His close connections to Hugh Lane are reflected in the poem September 1913 in which Yeats expresses his disappointment at the lack of support that Lane was given for the proposed gallery.

In his notable poem The Municipal Gallery Revisited (1937), Yeats recalls intimate memories of his and Lane’s close friends, including Hazel Lavery and Lady Gregory.

Sir Hugh Percy Lane was born on this day in Cork in 1875 to Frances Adelaide (Persse) Lane and to James William Lane. He was brought up in Cornwall, England where he did an apprenticeship in painting restoration and then worked as an art dealer.

Lane became one of the first dealers to collect French Impressionist paintings. His ambition to establish a gallery of modern art was realised in 1908 with the opening of the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, now called Hugh Lane Gallery. The collection has continued to grow and evolve to preserve the ambition that Sir Hugh Lane had for his gallery, that of being a leading city art gallery for Dublin’s citizens and visitors.

Today marks the 114th birthday of Francis Bacon who was born in Dublin on this day in 1909. Hugh Lane Gallery is proud to house the remarkable Bacon studio and his unique collection of works, including the last unfinished painting, Self-Portrait, which he was working on when he died.

Now Installing... Andy Warhol Three Times Out.
Part 2: Hanging the artworks

The hanging process takes surgeon-like precision from our team of art handlers. It is only possible through meticulous planning by our curators, measuring (twice), very carefully positioning the artwork and hanging in difficult-to-reach heights while ensuring everything is level to the millimeter - all with laser precision.

Irish artist Sarah Henrietta Purser passed away on this day in 1943. Purser played a very important role in the development of modern art in Ireland, her activism in the arts is noteworthy.

In 1901, she organised an exhibition by Irish artists Nathanial Hone and John Butler Yeats which was the initial motivation for Sir Hugh Lane establishing the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin. She also founded the An Túr Gloine stained glass studio in 1903 and the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland in 1924. Hugh Lane Gallery is proud to have nine drawings and paintings by Purser in its collection.

Hugh Lane Gallery invites you to visit ‘Bown + Bacon’, a new display of photographs of Francis Bacon that have been acquired recently and are now part of the permanent collection. The English photographer Jane Bown worked for The Observer newspaper for 60 years and is renowned for her black and white portraits of famous figures, including Samuel Beckett, Queen Elizabeth II, Björk, and Lucian Freud.

Francis Bacon was photographed by Bown in 1980 for an interview in The Observer and he later used one of these portraits as the frontispiece to his 1985 Tate retrospective exhibition catalogue. The gallery wishes to thank the Jane Bown Estate for this wonderful donation.

This display is available to view until 5th November 2023.

Through the architect Daniel Chester French, O'Connor was awarded the commission about 1900 or earlier for a pair of bronze doors for the Church of Saint Bartholomew, New York. Mrs Vanderbilt had restored the church as a memorial to her husband Cornelius and O'Connor's bronze doors were part of his memorial. Subsequently, the sculptor was commissioned to execute a relief for the tympanum above the door and two friezes which would link the central portico with subsidiary doors on either side.
