Hi there! The RCSI Debating Society has been invited to represent RCSI at the Annual Student Representative meeting with the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO). The IMO is the representative union of doctors in Ireland and they would like student input on how to strengthen the relationship between the IMO and students, as well as reform of intern induction and pay. If there's anything you'd like to contribute or for us to bring up, please drop me a message.
We're so proud of our speaker Kevin for his amazing speech on Friday, and for winning the IMO Student debate! Here he is receiving the Student Debate Medal from the President of the IMO, Dr. Peader Gilligan.
Don't forget! The IMO Student Debate will be taking place this Friday at 6PM, where representatives from the 6 medical schools in Ireland will be battling it out for the beautiful Student Debate Medal!

Dear All,
The Irish Times Debate is Ireland's longest-running debating competition and is now in its 58th year. All debates are pre-prepared, so motions will be sent out in advance, making the competition a great environment for novices and experienced speakers alike. Former winners include Marian Finucane, Dara O'Briain and Mr. Justice Adrian Hardiman.
The prize for the winning team and winning individual is an all-expenses paid three week debating tour the United States next March and April, organised by the Irish Times and their US partners. The winners will be hosted by universities across the US and previous tours have included visits to New York, Denver, and Alaska. We will also have goodie bags for all first round participants and draws for spot prizes throughout the year that everyone who competes in a first round will be entered into.
Further information on the format and what to expect from the competition can be found in the following article - please feel free to share this around your society to help new speakers familiarise themselves with the competition: http://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/guide-for-speakers-entering-the-competition-1.1706760
If you wanna sign up, please message us on our page, so we can put your name up.
Many thanks,
RCSI debatesoc

The Irish Mace debates are coming up! These debates will start at the end of October, the winners progressing to the next round. You and a partner will debate against university students for the chance to represent Ireland at the John Smith Memorial Mace against England, Scotland and Wales! This competition is great for novice speakers and even features rounds exclusively for novice debaters.
You'll get your motion a week (at least) in advance so we can give you all the help and training you need and the organisers of the competition will gladly host a workshop at RCSI for our debaters.
Reg closes Saturday so drop us an email or message us on Facebook if you want to compete!
Excellent, witty speeches at Debate Society's very own Life Raft Debate! As expected, Professor Ronan Conroy the Epidemiologist, Professor Jane Holland the Anatomist, and SU's Malak AlQubaisi the Cultural Officer did not disappoint at all!
Just over an hour left before the final debate of the year! "That This House Believes Religion does more good than harm" 6:30pm, TR2/3.
We'll be hosting our AGM after the debate in order to elect the new committee for 2016/2017 so come down if you want to take part.
