Why New Year resolutions don’t work:

Like Monday morning diets, New Year resolutions carry that quality of Ground Hog Day. As the New Year progresses and our will power wanes, the desire to indulge becomes too intense to withstand. Again we find ourselves trapped by habits we swore we would not repeat.

Can this ‘so called’ lack of will power be explained psychologically?

Yes.

For example, you’re at work and are having an interaction with your boss. This interaction elicits anger or fear but because of the power dynamic, you cannot express it. Afterwards you find yourself standing outside the office having that cigarette you swore you’d never touch again. Or, you find yourself in the canteen eating cake, ignoring your resolve to lose weight.
The emotions triggered by your boss are obviously stronger than your will power. Why? Because these emotions of fear or anger are unconsciously connecting with other deep seated emotions of fear or anger that you are (possibly unconsciously) holding onto.

Perhaps growing up, you had controlling parents, or you lived in a very rigid environment where there was no room for freedom of expression. You could not vent your anger or name your fear. So you cut off or suppressed these feelings. But still they remain, dormant, waiting to be felt and released. The interaction with your boss brings these unconscious feelings to the surface and you start to feel them again, alongside your current feelings. You may sense that you are overreacting, but you don’t know why.

Why does the craving for a cigarette win out? Because these feelings seem unbearable and smoking helps to suppress them. But, after a time, all feelings naturally subside. And when they do, the realization occurs that once again you’ve not managed to hold onto your New Years’ resolve.

This can lead to self defeating and self blaming thoughts, such as ‘I have no will power’ or ‘I’m not strong enough’. Then you either affirm to continue with your resolution or else you give up. It’s likely, that whatever decision you choose, is also a recurring pattern in your life.

What is missing in all of this is your Awareness. Awareness is that quality where you have the ability to observe yourself as you go about your day. The more aware you become, the more you can step back from your automatic and habitual behaviour and reactions. Most people tend to observe and react to others - just like you did with your boss - but the trick is to observe yourself, not the other person. This is where your real power lies.

Therapy works to help raise awareness, to begin to take notice of your habitual thoughts patterns and emotional reactions. The more aware you become, the more you can choose how you want to behave. Awareness also helps to heal. When deep seated emotions such as anger, rage or hurt arise, they do so in order to alert you to some unfinished business in yourself. If you listen, pay attention and stay with these emotions, you can heal the old wounds.

Repeating patterns of behaviour from year to year is akin to Albert Einstein’s quotation.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.”

Therapy: a different approach to our New Year Resolutions.
