Huge thanks to everyone who took part in our psychology survey before Christmas. the survey aimed to assess the effects our five personality types have on our levels of life satisfaction and optimism and I wanted to let you all know the results. The five established personality traits are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. 656 people completed the survey, 64.7% were Irish followed by citizens from the UK (6.4%) and Europe (3.5%). 56.4% of the participants were female. The results demonstrated that in a predominantly Irish sample, our personality traits predict 31.79% of our life satisfaction and a whopping 55% of our sense of optimism. More specifically, being a low on neuroticism accounts for 18.5% of our sense of having a good life satisfaction and 30% of how optimistic we feel. Further, being an extravert accounts for 6.15% of our life satisfaction and 14% of our optimism. and finally, optimism accounts for 27% of our feeling of having good life satisfaction. So what does this all mean really? Well, essentially, those of us who are low on the personality trait neuroticism (ie, we are calm, don’t worry, don’t stress, don’t sweat the small stuff) have better feelings of life satisfaction than someone who is high on neuroticism, (stressed, angry, worried). Secondly, those who are high on extraversion also have better feelings of optimism and life satisfaction than those who low on extraversion (ie being outgoing and sociable have greater benefits than staying home and spending time alone. the great news is we can cultivate and enhance being more extroverted or low on neuroticism (ie emotionally stable).
