Client testimonial from Luke.
"I have been training with Jay for about 4 months now, and I can honestly say it's been one of the best decisions I have made.
Jay has really got me understanding that working out and dieting doesn't have to be this big deal, and that both can easily be added to anyone's lifestyle, and that you just need to find what's right for you. Great trainer that really wants what best for the client."
- Luke, Waterford
Client testimonial from Joyce.
"Jason is an amazing Personal Trainer. He took the time to listen to what my goals were then, with a plan in place to work from. Every session was tailored to meet my goals with fun and laughs included.
Jason is so encouraging and motivating, and in a few weeks I felt great and I could notice the results, I was stronger and toned. I loved the sessions every week." - Joyce, Wexford.
Client testimonial from Clodagh.
"Thank you so much Jason. I really enjoyed the personal training with you and can really see the results of your workouts. Your Personal training has greatly improved my balance and strength as you tailored my training plan so it suited me and my level of fitness. A testimonial from a long term client. Donals positive attitude to exercise and enthusiasm to achieve his goals has no doubt been a huge influence on his success. It is very rewarding as a Personal Trainer seeing Donal go from strength to strength as he achieves his goals and continues to exceed each milestone we have set.
Nutrition or Exercise – What is most important to get healthier?
The simplest answer is, they are both important, and both serve unique purposes. If you want to know why this is and how they both factor into health and fitness, have a read below.
-
A question I hear a lot is, what is best for achieving weight loss, eating healthier or exercising? Another question I come across is, if I want to build muscle does food intake really matter? The answer to whether food intake or exercise is the most important is highlighted by these two questions.
-
First let’s look at nutrition, to lose weight you have to be eating less than your body needs, otherwise known as a calorie deficit, while providing it with all the essential nutrients necessary to remain healthy. While to build muscle, you’re going to have the best results when eating more than your body needs to maintain weight while increasing protein intake to stimulate muscle growth and maximise recovery.
-
Then there’s exercise, when your goal is weight loss, exercise helps increase the number of calories (energy) expended each day therefore making it easier to be in a calorie deficit without the need to reduce your food intake to the extend you would with diet alone. While when it comes to muscle growth, exercise provides the essential stimulus (or simply put, it gives your body the reason) to begin to build muscle and get stronger.
-
So, when you consider how food and exercise can play a role in weight loss or muscle growth, it all depends on your goal. For weight loss a combination of reducing caloric intake while exercising to increase the deficit in energy daily will yield the greatest and most sustainable weight loss method. This is because you are using two avenues to achieve that deficit. While with muscle growth combining the two is essential to achieve meaningful strength and muscle gain, through muscle growth stimulation from exercise and optimal recovery via adequate nutritional intake.
-
Aside from achieving your goals, when combined, a healthy diet and regular exercise will open the door to all the health benefits associated with this lifestyle as well. These can include higher daily energy levels, better sleep, improved mental health and clarity, and personal confidence. This is especially true when considering that diet alone without exercise may keep you at a desired weight, but your fitness and mobility may be suffering while exercise alone may get you fitter, but a poor diet can result in a range of health issues that exercise alone can not totally prevent. Exercise and nutrition exist in harmony with each other to help keep you healthy, physically and mentally.
-
Combining a diet that sets you up for success in achieving your fitness goals while taking part in regular exercise will be the optimal position to be in to invest in yourself and reach your personal health and fitness goals. If you would like any more information or if you want to work together to begin achieving your health and fitness goals, reach out via my WhatsApp on my page and I would be happy to schedule a free consultation with you.
While weights are a great tool to use while exercising, weight training is not the only way to get fit. The idea that high intensity weight training or having a fully kitted out home gym is the only way to get healthier is not a helpful one.
-
I always aim to provide a healthy dose of realism to fitness expectations, resistance training, that is working out with some form of weights applied to the body, is definitely a very effective way to get stronger and has many other reported benefits such as better posture and improved bone health. However, it is not the only way to increase your fitness and can be a barrier for some who just want to start getting a bit healthier but are afraid they have to lift heavy weights to get going. If this sounds familiar to you, or if you are interested in this topic have a quick read, maybe this will help give you an idea of some alternatives.
-
If you are a beginner, the good news is that you have a wide variety of methods to choose from to get fitter. If you’re simply just looking to lose some body fat or want to improve your strength to feel a bit more energetic, whatever your initial goals are, there certainly is something that works for you. Even those more familiar to exercise can benefit from alternate forms of training.
-
For a start bodyweight training is a great way to improve your initial strength and stability when your new to exercise, often piling on the weights and trying to lift big will only lead to injury when not properly prepared first. The key is to start small and work your way up. Using your own bodyweight to do this is a good place to start, there is nothing wrong with just starting with some push ups from your knees or some bodyweight squats to get things moving. In fact, doing these exercises will allow you to become familiar with how your body moves and allow you to perform weighted exercises more safely later on.
-
If you do have access to some weights, or resistance bands and are excited to try them out, when using them in your exercise routines, the approach would be to start where your comfortable and work your way up as your strength and confidence with the movements improve. I will be posting about how resistance bands can improve your strength as an alternative to weights, but the main point here is this. To get fitter we have to place a bit of stress on the muscles of the body, but not too much. This can take many forms, bodyweight, resistance bands, and weights such as dumbbells or kettlebells are all forms of resistance.
-
Overall, when done correctly, you will see a benefit from any variation of resistance training, don’t be fooled by what you might read on fad websites, to get stronger or lose a couple pounds you do not have to lift 100kg of weight plates or huge kettlebells. If that sounds difficult, its because it is, it is unsurprisingly quite difficult to lift your entire equivalent weight on a bar or move even half that around for high intensity lifts. Though it’s entirely possible to do this, we all work toward our own individual strength goals and have to start somewhere unique to our own fitness level. The good news is we don’t need to lift heavy weights to make a start, and some might never need to. It all begins with small steady steps to build up to where you want to be later on.
-
Safety and sustainability are your friend, by starting where your comfortable it will be more enjoyable to start exercising and will fit more easily into your lifestyle. Are weights great? Yes. Are they a necessity? No. Give this post a share if you can so it can reach someone who might like to read this, if you have any questions on how to get started with your exercise goals or want some guidance on your weight training currently, send me a message or contact me by clicking the WhatsApp button on my page, I would be happy to help.
-
I will also be posting about taking on some more clients for online and potentially socially distanced training (following the updating guidelines) so if you would like to get in touch or know someone who might like to hear more, send them on my info or share my page with them so I can be of service, thank you, and all the best – Jay.
Fitness and Lifestyle – it’s not an all or nothing approach.
-
When it comes to healthy living, it can be easy when looking at something unfamiliar such as exercise or a new diet approach and think in absolutes. To see it as either, I do this perfectly or not at all, or even worse, putting it off for the right time. Truth be told, I have done this myself, however there is never a “perfect” time for anything, only giving it a shot, as best you can.
-
Take exercise or diet, the same logic applies. We can always put it off or if we don’t get a perfect start say to ourselves, sure I’ll start again in a week. The fact of this outlook is we limit our potential to what would happen if we just did a little and slowly built up from there, rather than resetting every time we hit an obstacle to healthier habits.
-
For example, aiming to get in three workouts a week and eliminating snacks entirely might seem like a good place to start, but it might not be. For some, one half hour workout a week is a better place to start while simply reducing snacking, not cut it entirely. Why? Because we must do something sustainably for it to be successful in the long term and something is better than nothing at all.
-
If all you can fit in is one day where you go for a 30-minute walk or even better, a dedicated single workout session a week, then that is one step closer to your health goals than yesterday. You would be surprised how many people end up progressing far beyond they ever thought possible at the beginning, by managing expectations and taking pride in the little steps, the first steps towards their goals.
-
Furthermore, once started, one missed workout or a day where you consumed foods not “allowed” in your diet does not undo all the good work done before. We might think in day-to-day terms, but the body does not. If we stray off our healthier living path for a day, maybe a week, just get back to it as best you can as soon as you can.
-
Over the long term it’s still positive change even with the addition of a dip here and there. Sometimes the break in our efforts or the cheat meal can give us more motivation and energy to get back to it going forward.
-
Everyone has their own goals unique to them, but by taking just a small step in the beginning, we pave the way for leaps and bounds later on.
-
Simply put, a small number of exercises done well and consistently over the long term or making one small positive change to your diet that you can stick to, is far better than overhauling your entire life through high intensity workout regimes and fad diets that you might not be able to maintain. Some unsustainable workout regimes and fad diets that ultimately may not fit your lifestyle can end up placing you back wondering “How could this possibly be feasible for me long term”?
-
If you’re finding it difficult to make these changes, the trick is to start small and dream big. Sounds a bit cliché but in my experience, it’s a great approach to getting the best footing for beginning your health journey. If you have any questions or are interested in getting started towards your goals, reach out to me and I would be happy to give you some more information or ideas on some steps that you can take to get moving toward yours.
