Every year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) marks October 10 as World Mental Health Day with an overall objective to raise awareness about mental health issues across the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.

Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of public health. According to studies, nearly 1 billion people are living with a mental disorder, 3 million people die every year from the harmful use of alcohol and one person dies every 40 seconds by su***de.

Every year, the day is marked with a particular theme, and this year the World Mental Health Day 2021 theme is ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’ that focuses on reducing the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’. A gap that is growing wider with time and there is continuing unmet need in the care of people with mental health problems.

People should look out for the following as possible signs of a mental health disorder:

* withdrawing from friends, family, and colleagues
* avoiding activities that they would normally enjoy
* sleeping too much or too little
* eating too much or too little
* feeling hopeless
* having consistently low energy
* using mood-altering substances, including alcohol and ni****ne, more frequently
* displaying negative emotions
* being confused
* being unable to complete daily tasks, such as getting to work or cooking a meal
* having persistent thoughts or memories that reappear regularly
* thinking of causing physical harm to themselves or others
* hearing voices
* experiencing delusions

"Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan"

Lal Bahadur Shastri has several achievements to his credit. Known for his acumen and planning skills, Shastri promoted the White Revolution and Green Revolution in India, boosting food production in the country.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, a key figure in the Indian Independence movement, and India’s second Prime Minister. He succeeded Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, after the latter’s sudden demise. He is remembered for leading India through the Indo-Pakistan War in 1965, being relatively new to the high office. He realised the need for self-sustenance and self-reliance in India and raised the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ which he is remembered for even today.

Shastri’s thoughts and philosophy reflect the influence of personalities like Swami Vivekananda, Annie Besant, and Mahatma Gandhi. Right from 1920. Shastri was widely known for his role in India’s freedom struggle. Interestingly, Lal Bahadur Shastri shares his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi. Shastri was born on 2nd October 1904.

Gandhi once said, "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver"

Gandhi led a simple, disciplined life and followed a routine that included daily exercise, a vegetarian diet and stayed away from to***co and alcohol. He walked around 18kms, or 22,500 steps, every day for over 40 years, and covered a total of 79,000kms for his campaigns between 1913 and 1948. That is equivalent to walking around the Earth twice.

The World Health Organisation recommends walking 8,000-10,000 steps a day to stay healthy.

"Just like Gandhi ji, we at WHO believe that health is multi-sectoral and needs to focus not just on health care delivery but also on sanitation, water, and nutrition. India is making an effort through programmes, such as the Swacch Bharat Mission", said Poonam Khetrapal Singh, regional director, WHO South-East Asia.

Dr Rajni Kant, the senior scientist, ICMR, said "He(Gandhi) was a simple man, and his simple solutions such as walking and eating natural foods to keep fit could serve as a reminder for us, given the rising burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease".

Today, on the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Father of the Nation, let us recall and inculcate his simple solutions to lead a healthy life.

World Heart is celebrated on 29 September.

In May 2012, world leaders committed to reducing global mortality from non-communicable diseases(NCDs) by 25% by 2025. Cardiovascular disease(CVD) is accountable for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the world's No. 1 killer.

Heart disease and stroke claims 18.6 million lives each year. Individuals of working age(35-65 years) are the most affected by lifestyle diseases.

Keep an eye out for:

- Pain or pressure in the chest
- Arm weakness/numbness
- Slurred or garbled speech
- Visual impairment
- Severe headache
- Dizziness

Lifestyle habits such as not smoking, not being obese, engaging in regular physical activity, and eating a healthy diet lowers heart disease risk by nearly 50%.
