A little bit on Block printing
Block printing has been prevalent in the country for centuries now. It is probably the oldest form of fabric printing and with the advent of technology block printing would probably be the slowest. That being said, no machine can take the place of these skilled artisans who create each fabric with their sweat and toil.
The designs are at first engraved on pieces of wood. These are then dipped in mustard oil and left untouched for a week at least. This is done so that the wood doesn't crack and it lengthens the life of the blocks. The blocks may vary in size but will always be 2 to 3 inches in thickness.Small holes are drilled into the blocks to enable the wood to breathe. This process too helps in extending the life of the wooden blocks.

At the outset the cloth is washed thoroughly to remove the starch. Once the fabric is ready the wooden blocks are dipped in colours, made from nature from pomegranate, turmeric, indigo or madder. These coloured blocks are then painstakingly pressed onto the fabric for the entire length of the cloth and this laborious process brings the cloth to life.

Block printing is seen in its various forms in many parts of the country. Bagru, Dabu, Sanganeri and Barmer prints in Rajasthan, Ajrakh in Gujrat, Serampore in West Bengal and Bagh in Madhya Pradesh. Although they all use more or less the same technique, one can identify each print by their motifs which we shall leave for a later date:)
