CEREBRAL PALSY & OSTEOPOROSIS :

Osteoporosis is a secondary complication of cerebral palsy. But it can be prevented by regular inclusion of exercises such as weight bearing exercises and strength training.

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses can cause a fracture.

🔹Symptoms:

There typically are no symptoms in the early stages of bone loss. But once your bones have been weakened by osteoporosis, you might have signs and symptoms that include:

▪️Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
▪️Loss of height over time
▪️A stooped posture
▪️A bone that breaks much more easily than expected

🔹Causes:

Your bones are in a constant state of renewal — new bone is made and old bone is broken down.
When you're young, your body makes new bone faster than it breaks down old bone and your bone mass increases.
After the early 20s this process slows, and most people reach their peak bone mass by age 30. As people age, bone mass is lost faster than it's created.

How likely you are to develop osteoporosis depends partly on how much bone mass you attained in your youth. Peak bone mass is somewhat inherited and varies also by ethnic group. The higher your peak bone mass, the less likely you are to develop osteoporosis as you age.

🔹 Risk Factors:

Non-modifiable:

Some risk factors for osteoporosis are out of your control, including:
▪️Gender: Women are much more likely to develop osteoporosis than are men.
▪️Age: The older you get, the greater your risk of osteoporosis.
▪️Race: You're at greatest risk of osteoporosis if you're white or of Asian descent.
▪️Family history: Having a parent or sibling with osteoporosis puts you at greater risk, especially if your mother or father fractured a hip.
▪️Body frame size: Men and women who have small body frames tend to have a higher risk because they might have less bone mass to draw from as they age.

Modifiable:

▪️ Hyperthyroidism
▪️ Low Calcium intake
▪️ Long term use of some medications such as steroids and anticonvulsant
▪️ Sedentary lifestyle
▪️ Excessive alcohol consumption
▪️ To***co use
▪️ Less exposure to Sunlight

🔹 Prevention:

Good nutrition and regular exercise are essential for keeping your bones healthy throughout your life.

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which can lead to increased risk of fracture.

Known as the “silent thief”, bone deterioration can occur over a number of years without any symptoms.

Unfortunately, by the time affected bones break or fracture, the disease is already fairly advanced and less treatable. The most common fractures associated with osteoporosis are in the hip, spine, wrist, and shoulder.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)?

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease, which means that your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake, causing inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected parts of the body.

RA mainly attacks the joints, usually many joints at once. RA commonly affects joints in the hands, wrists, and knees. In a joint with RA, the lining of the joint becomes inflamed, causing damage to joint tissue. This tissue damage can cause long-lasting or chronic pain, unsteadiness (lack of balance), and deformity.

RA can also affect other tissues throughout the body and cause problems in organs such as the lungs, heart, and eyes.

What are the signs and symptoms of RA?

With RA, there are times when symptoms get worse, known as flares, and times when symptoms get better, known as remission.

Signs and symptoms of RA include:

🔹Pain or aching in more than one joint
🔹Stiffness in more than one joint
🔹Tenderness and swelling in more than one joint
🔹The same symptoms on both sides of the body (such as in both hands or both knees)
🔹Weight loss
🔹Fever
🔹Fatigue or tiredness
🔹Weakness

While you may worry that exercising with osteoarthritis (OA) could harm your joints and cause more pain, research shows that people can and should exercise when they have osteoarthritis.

In fact, exercise is considered the most effective, non-drug treatment for reducing pain and improving movement and overall function in patients with osteoarthritis. And it also delays the progression of arthritis into next stage.

For more details DM.

Arthritis is very common but is not well understood. Actually, “arthritis” is not a single disease; it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease.

There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. People of all ages, sexes and races can and do have arthritis, and it is the leading cause of disability. More than 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some type of arthritis.

It is most common among women and occurs more frequently as people get older.

Common arthritis joint symptoms include :
swelling,
pain,
stiffness and
decreased range of motion.
Symptoms may come and go. They can be mild, moderate or severe. They may stay about the same for years but can progress or get worse over time.
Severe arthritis can result in chronic pain, inability to do daily activities and make it difficult to walk or climb stairs.

Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes. These changes may be visible, such as knobby finger joints, but often the damage can only be seen on X-ray.

Some types of arthritis also affect the heart, eyes, lungs, kidneys and skin as well as the joints.
