We are delighted to announce that PEPP graduate Md. Almagir Hossain, together with PEPP professors Mohammad Abdul Malek, and Zhengfei Yu, have had a joint research paper published in the prestigious Asian Development Bank’s “Asian Development Review”*.

We are thrilled to announce that one of our faculty members of PEPP, Professor Fukai, recently had his research published in one of the most prestigious academic medical journals, JAMA Pediatrics (IF 26.8 ). This research delves into the impact of COVID-19 on early childhood development. The study, which involved 887 Japanese children, revealed that children exposed to the pandemic experienced a developmental delay of 4.39 months by the age of 5. These variations in development were even more pronounced during the pandemic, underscoring the need for support in areas such as learning, socialization, and overall well-being.

Congratulations to Professor Fukai on this remarkable achievement!
We are delighted to announce that, this year, one of our students, Ms. Isurun Gamage, received the 2nd best thesis award in the field of human development from ADB.

Isurun, congratulations! It is a wonderful achievement!
The following information is about the process of screening from ADB:
The ADB-JSP Secretariat received 21 nominations from 11 partner institutions. The nominated theses were distributed for evaluation by ten committee members headed by the Chair. The screening committee members reviewed the blinded theses (i.e., without the authors’ names, their universities, and their nationalities) using standard evaluation criteria set by ADB–JSP. The Government of Japan has endorsed the result of the screening.
ADB-Japan Scholarship Program Secretariat is pleased to announce the winners of the ADB-JSP Thesis of the Year Award 2023 after stringent evaluation by a screening committee chaired by Dr Peter Morgan, Advisor to the Dean, ADB Institute. Members of the committee included ADBI research fellows, and ADB specialists. The winners will be recognized during the Graduation Gathering in August and will present their theses at the TOYA Workshop in September.
Congratulations to all the winners!
A big thank you to Associate Professor Ishise Hirokazu of Osaka University for giving the latest PEPP Special Seminar: 'Nominal Exchange Rate Variability, Industry-level Nominal Wage Rigidity, and the Pattern of Trade'.
Congratulations to our 17th Cohort new graduates! The graduation party was so much fun that we genuinely forgot to focus on the eating/conversing photos! Hopefully these give a taste of the celebrations though, with 18th Cohort students and professors coming together for an evening of great conversation and delicious halal-friendly food (special thanks to Café Marhaban)!

Before the pandemic, PEPP used to have a coffee/tea hour every semester where professors and students came together, chatted, and discussed research, classes, economics, culture, and other issues.
Yesterday, we re-started this tradition. It was fun to chat with students while having good tea. We want to continue this kind of tea/coffee hour on a regular basis. If you missed yesterday's tea hour, please attend it the next time.
PEPP was pleased to be able to put on another Career Development Seminar this Tuesday, December 13th. Dr. Astghik Mavisakalyan was kind enough to share her 'Thoughts on Succeeding in Academia', before giving a Special Seminar on 'Mining and Mistrust in Government' later in the day. A graduate of PEPP (5th Cohort), and currently Associate Professor in Curtin University's Faculty of Business and Law (Australia), Dr.Mavisakalyan's interactive sessions served as a great inspiration to current students and other participants alike.
We are delighted to announce that Mr. Amarsanaa, an 8th cohort PEPP scholar, has published a joint paper in Comparative Economic Studies in collaboration with PEPP's faculty member, Professor Kurokawa.
Mr. Amarsanaa and Professor Kurokawa used several structural changes and trade liberalization episodes to investigate whether the variety of traded goods, which is the extensive margin of trade, has changed in Mongolia, as predicted by recent theoretical models.
Their paper concludes that the timing of growth in the extensive margin of trade coincides with policy measures taken by the government during the period of structural reforms and trade liberalizations.
Congratulations Mr. Amarsanaa and Professor Kurokowa for this excellent achievement!

A mini study trip in Tsukuba.
Due to COVID, 17th cohort scholars and I had a mini daily study trip at Tsukuba in this September. We visited JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, and the National Geological Museum. All three places are located in Tsukuba. It was pretty fun! We are hoping that we can go to Nagoya as a field trip in February!
Always seeking to push the boundaries of Public Policy and Economics, PEPP is proud to welcome two new members to our faculty team: Professor Taiyo Fukai and Professor Fatwa Ramdani.
Professor Fukai (left) specializes in labor economics and applied micro econometrics and joins PEPP having served as a research officer at the Economic and Social Research Institute, Cabinet Office, Government of Japan. Taiyo received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo.

Fatwa joins PEPP having taught at Brawijaya University, Indonesia, where he also acted as director in the Geoinformatics Research Group.
We have an open seminar in the next two weeks. Our lunch seminar will be open to the public. If you live in Tsukuba or near Tsukuba and if you know somebody who might be interested in our program, we would appreciate it if you could disseminate the following information.
