‘I like to mix it all together, European sources and the mass media. I feel the world is like that -a complete mixture of everything…I guess I’m doing abstract paintings and making them a little less abstract by putting faces on them.’

‘I describe what I do as psychological cubism, ‘ says George Condo. ‘Picasso painted a violin from four different perspectives at one moment. I do the same with psychological states. Four of them can occur simultaneously. Like glimpsing a bus with one passenger howling over a joke they’re hearing down the phone, someone else asleep, someone else crying – I’ll put them all in one face.’

that Pierre Soulages has always seen black in a unique way?

Even as a child, Soulages had a distinct understanding of black. When asked to paint snow, he used black, explaining that it made the white paper look even whiter by enhancing the contrast. This innate understanding of light and shadow laid the foundation for his renowned ‘Outrenoir’ concept. Through this, Soulages delved into the intricate dance of light across textured black canvases, forging a path of artistic exploration unlike any other.
