Astronomical Society of Trinity College

Official page of the Astronomical Society of Trinity College The first secretary was P.R. Perera and the President was Mr. McLeod Campbell the Principal.

The Astronomical Society of Trinity Kandy (ASTCK) came in to existence on the 22nd of October 1928, considering the request made by a large number of students who were interested in astronomy at that time. After few meetings and lectures the society felt the need of having something more practical for their astronomical work. The ASTCK was privileged to have an observatory built inside the College

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launches with the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) spacecraft onboard, Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Jointly developed by NASA and Centre National D'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and United Kingdom Space Agency, SWOT is the first satellite mission that will observe nearly all water on Earth’s surface, measuring the height of water in the planet’s lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and the ocean.

A dwarf galaxy is a small galaxy composed of about 1000 up to several billion stars, as compared to the Milky Way's 200–400 billion stars. The Large Magellanic Cloud, which closely orbits the Milky Way and contains over 30 billion stars, is sometimes classified as a dwarf galaxy 🌌 💫

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, the agency's successor to the famous Hubble telescope, launched on Dec. 25, 2021 on a mission to study the earliest stars and peer back farther into the universe's past than ever before.

Webb is currently on a 29-day trip to its observing spot, Lagrange point 2 (L2), nearly 1 million miles (1.6 million km). It is the largest and most powerful space telescope ever launched.

"A small step for a man, but a great leap for humanity" 🌍

Four American space tourists began an incredible journey in zero gravity on Wednesday in a SpaceX spacecraft, where they must spend three days in orbit around the Earth without any professional astronaut onboard, a historic first because it is the first civilian mission that will orbit our planet.

The Falcon9 rocket lifted off at the scheduled time, from the mythical launch area 39A of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, in the middle of a fireball that illuminated the night.

A few minutes later, the first and then the second floor of the rocket separated, leaving the Dragon capsule and its passengers alone in the cosmos.

"Few have been there before and many will continue. The door is opening now, it's pretty amazing," billionaire Jared Isaacman, the mission commander, said from inside the capsule after reaching space.

They must travel farther than the International Space Station (ISS), in a target orbit of 575 km. Every day they will go around the world about 15 times.

Inspiration4, the mission represents a step toward democratizing space, demonstrating that the cosmos is not reserved only for astronaut crews trained over the years.

The Mars Exploration Program is a science-driven program that seeks to understand whether Mars was, is, or can be, a habitable world. To find out, we need to understand how geologic, climatic, and other processes have worked to shape Mars and its environment over time, as well as how they interact today.

The goal of the Mars Exploration Program is to explore Mars and to provide a continuous flow of scientific information and discovery through a carefully selected series of robotic orbiters, landers and mobile laboratories interconnected by a high-bandwidth Mars/Earth communications network.

Starship is the fully reusable spacecraft and second stage of the Starship system. It offers an integrated payload section and is capable of carrying passengers and cargo to Earth orbit, planetary destinations, and between destinations on Earth.

Starship system is a fully reusable, two-stage-to-orbit super heavy-lift launch vehicle that is currently under development by SpaceX. As of August 2021, it is the world's tallest and most powerful rocket ever built, with more than twice the thrust of the Saturn V.

The Falcon 9 is a medium- to heavy-lift launch vehicle designed and built by Hawthorne, California-based Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX). It is the first, and only, rocket to fly and soft-land a first stage after it has sent payloads to orbit.

The Falcon 9 is also the first commercially designed and built vehicle to launch spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). The Falcon 9 has launched satellites for commercial customers, cargo for the ISS, and was awarded a contract by the U.S. Air Force in 2016.

At present, the Falcon 9 is slated to launch the Crew Dragon spacecraft to the ISS in 2018 under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (CCP). SpaceX also plans to launch a “Heavy” version of the vehicle, which will employ three Falcon 9 stages for payloads going beyond low Earth orbit.

Rest in Peace Michael Collins (1930 - 2021)

Michael Collins, the man who stayed behind aboard the Apollo 11 command module while crewmates Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the moon and walked into history, died Wednesday after a battle with cancer, his family announced. He was 90.

He was also a test pilot and major general in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He will always be remembered as a tireless promoter of space, human space travel, and exploration.
