Our thoughts and prayers are with all our friends and patients who have seen their city destroyed. We cannot begin to comprehend what the people of this city, that we have visited many times, have endured in these last days. We wish everybody safety and hope recovery will be very soon to start. The Importance of Fixing a Hiatus Hernia When Doing a Sleeve Gastrectomy hiatus (hiatal) hernias need to be repaired during sleeve surgery. If not done properly, this will cause patients problems later on like reflux and choking.

Easy and Cheap Tip for Well Healed Scars: Tape them! After the steri strips fall off (or you remove them 10 days to 2 weeks post-op) put a piece of tape over each incision. I prefer 3M Micropore because it's soft and doesn't cause skin irritation. Just leave the tape on until it starts peeling off, then replace. If you're patient enough to do this for 3 months or so, your scars will heal flatter and lighter than they would have healed exposed. It's really easy and very low maintenance :)

Tip for feeling more satiated during clear liquid stage:
After a couple days of water, sports drinks and jello I was feeling empty and weak. The great savior was broth! It's warm, comforting and packs the great combination of fat, salt and protein. You still need the other liquids but do not underestimate the power of broth! And do not be afraid of fat - that was in the past. Fat keeps you satiatied and it's something your body needs in certain amounts. Especially during liquid diets.

Easy Delicious Recipe for Chicken Broth:
In a pot, 2 chicken thighs (bone in, skin ON), 1 onion cut in 4 pieces, 1 tomato cut in 4 pieces, 4 cloves garlic (peeled), 1 Tbsp salt, 4 Liters water. Cover and boil for 1 - 1.5 hours. Remove chicken, give to those more fortunate than us who can eat ;) and use an immersion blender in the broth to completely blend all the pieces of onion, tomato and garlic. Sip and enjoy!
Tip: drink broth from mug instead of using spoon. It decreases the air intake a lot.

Tip for post-op liquid phase of diet: SIPPY CUP!!! I find it SO helpful in keeping each sip small and it greatly decreases swallowing air so the pain of gas is minimal. It's easy to carry around (I used the 4 oz small one) and helps very much to stay hydrated. I carry it around the house with me and out in my purse.
