The project is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering UK. Two microcredential modules have been developed entitled "TinyML for Engineering Safety" and "Soft Skills for Responsible Engineers", under the collaboration of FKAB UKM, ICTP: International Centre for Theoretical Physics Italy & IX Telecom. The module contains lecture videos, assessment, live case study recording, animation case study and expert forum discussion.
Our recent paper provides a comprehensive survey on the application of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) techniques to minimize the Age of Information (AoI) in UAV-assisted data collection systems, particularly in scenarios where timely data is crucial, categorised into policy-based, value-based, and actor-critic DRL methods. Within the context of Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), several UAV-assisted applications, including environmental monitoring, smart cities, health, and disaster management were highlighted. The key challenges in implementing DRL for AoI minimization include the complexity of the environment, the need for real-time decision-making, and the integration of various system components. The paper is open access & available to all through this link: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10589619
Our recent paper based on the PhD work of Dr. Ammar Riadh Kairaldeen explores the integration of machine learning techniques to enhance security and performance in IoT blockchain networks and the rapidly evolving digital landscape. It highlights the use of anomaly detection to identify potential security threats and effectively predict fraudulent transactions. The research emphasizes the importance of transaction representation for optimizing data processing and scalability. It identifies key areas for future exploration, including advanced algorithms and large-scale deployment strategies. This work is very much aligned to our research grant supported by Royal Academy of Engineering Distinguished International Associates programme entitled "Blockchain-based Mobility-as-a-Service: The Future of Intelligent Transportation Systems for a Sustainable Society".

Another recently published work by Wireless Research@UKM delves into the realm of Industry 4.0, focusing on the optimization of Virtual Network Function (VNF) placement in industrial automation systems. Leveraging the power of 5G technology and reinforcement learning algorithms, the study aims to minimize overall latency while considering the reliability of the 5G wireless channel, particularly in mmWave bands.
The study formulates an optimization problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and introduces two reinforcement learning-based algorithms (AVP-Q and AVP-DQN) to optimize VNF placement. These algorithms outperform existing methods, showcasing significant improvements towards enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and latency of industrial automation systems in the era of Industry 4.0.

Last year, Wireless Research@UKM team conducted extensive wireless measurements in remote tropical areas, collecting over 43,553 data samples to investigate the path loss limit on LoRa wireless communications. Several renowned path loss models were evaluated and a Machine Learning-based path loss model was proposed tailored to Malaysia’s remote tropical environment. This path loss model is designed for adaptation to complex remote terrains while achieving 89% accuracy on the prediction.
The team has broken our previous record for LoRa coverage, achieving 48 km coverage. The LoRa gateway was mounted atop the remote decommissioned mining hill, while drive tests were conducted from Chini to Pekan area. Safe to say we faced extreme conditions to achieve extreme communications!
Happy to share that the study has recently been published in the IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society.

On 19th June 2024, 14 undergraduate students and 8 postgraduate students of JKEES, UKM had an industrial visit to Huawei Malaysia KL (Intermark Tower) accompanied by two lecturers: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nor Fadzilah Abdullah and Dr Asma’ Abu Samah. The students had the opportunity to delve into the exciting world of telecommunications. This insightful session exposed them to the latest advancements and future directions shaping the industry.
Huawei representatives shed light on several key areas:
- 5G vs. 4G: Students gained a clear understanding of the improvements and advantages offered by 5G technology compared to its predecessor, 4G.
- 5.5G: A Glimpse into the Future: The visit offered a fascinating peek into China's implementation of 5.5G for industrial applications, showcasing the rapid evolution of mobile communication.
- 6G on the Horizon: Students were introduced to the general concepts and potential of 6G networks, sparking their curiosity about the future of connectivity.
Beyond network advancements, the session highlighted Huawei's commitment to innovation across various aspects:
- Smart Antenna Design: Students learned how antenna design adapts to address limitations in different areas, ensuring optimal network coverage.
- Tech for Sustainability: Huawei's vision for a connected world was presented, alongside its efforts in combining AI, IoT, cloud services, hardware, and software to contribute to sustainable development goals.
The visit wasn't just about cutting-edge technology; it also offered valuable career insights. Students were introduced to exciting programs like the Huawei Sales Elite Challenge and the Huawei ICT Competition, open to all university students regardless of background. These programs provide opportunities for students to explore their interests and develop skills in the ICT field.
Wireless Research@UKM was invited to MyNOG-11 conference to talk about the recently completed LUCI project, funded by ISIF Asia 2021 grant, APNIC Foundation. Thanks to the organisers for sponsoring the tickets for team members of the project (Assoc Prof Dr Fizee Abdullah, Prof Rosdiadee Nordin, Dr Asma' Abu Samah, Ms Hasinah) & our postgraduate students (Nauman, Sani, Mushfiq) who are working on hybrid LoRa, virtual network function in factory automation, optimal UAV path planning for disaster scenario, and plastic waste classification/volume estimation for prioritised retrieval planning. Wish our postdoc Dr Haider AlObaidy was also here. It was also a pleasant surprise to reconnect with our BEng alumni Ms Athirah Ridzuan, who is currently working at Fiberail. Enjoyed the yummy food and the generous freebies ;) Loved the durian conference logo & durian mochi! Looking forward to hearing many more success stories & innovations in wireless networks.
An overdue post. Belated congratulations to Dr. Ali Wheeb, who successfully defended his viva on the 16th of April 2024. His research was on the ADAPTIVE ROUTING PROTOCOL FOR RELIABLE UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES AD HOC NETWORK BASED ON DEEP Q-NETWORK.
