🔴ST JO’S HERITAGE BUILDING TODAY
The Straits and Oriental Museum is a three-floor lifestyle and heritage hub located at the iconic St. Jo’s Building. It proudly features Penang’s first museum showcasing over 300 ancient oriental ceramics from shipwrecks and those from the Song, Ming and Qing dynasty folk and official kilns while conveniently housing restaurants, an art gallery exhibition spaces and a merchandise section over the structure’s three floors.
🔴ITS HISTORY
The St. Joseph's Novitiate, is a significant heritage site situated in Pulau Tikus, Penang, with Gurney Drive to the north and Kelawai Road to the south. Presently, it stands meticulously restored and preserved as an integral part of Gurney Paragon Mall.
Historically, St. Joseph's Novitiate was a component of the St. Joseph's Training College, positioned adjacent to the original College General complex. In 1984, College General relocated to its current site on Mount Miriam. Subsequently, the premises of St. Joseph's Novitiate housed Uplands International School until it established its independent campus in Batu Ferringhi.
Both College General and the St. Joseph's Training College were seminaries established by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the Christian Brothers, Lasallian Brothers, French Christian Brothers, or De La Salle Brothers. This Roman Catholic teaching order played a pioneering role in mass education in Malaya and worldwide.
The Pulau Tikus site, which became linked with this order, was acquired by the De La Salle Brothers in 1916 for a novitiate (lodgings for novices) and a training college. Originally, the buildings of St. Joseph's Training College faced the sea along North Beach, as Gurney Drive had not yet been established. St. Joseph's primarily served as a teacher's training college for those aspiring to teach in schools established by the La Salle Brothers.
Among the mission schools established were St. Xavier's Institution and Convent Light Street in Penang, St. Michael's Institution in Ipoh, and St. Joseph's Institution (now known as the Singapore Art Museum) in Singapore.
Constructed in 1925, the St. Joseph's Novitiate building is a two-story edifice featuring an upper-level chapel. This structure boasts exquisite stained-glass windows and a statue of Mary triumphing over a serpent. On the exterior wall facing Gurney Drive, an inscription in Latin, ANNO SANCTO MCMXXV, commemorates the year of its completion, translating to Holy Year 1925.
Following the departure of the De La Salle Brothers from the Gurney Drive premises in the early 1980s, the International School of Penang (Uplands) took over the site. By mid-2006, the international school, which had been leasing both the land and the St. Joseph's Novitiate building rather than owning them outright, relocated to Batu Ferringhi.
