The House of Yeap Chor Ee was the first home of Yeap Chor Ee, a young immigrant who came to Penang in 1885 and worked as a barber before becoming a captain of industry at the turn of the 20th century. Through the journey of Yeap Chor Ee, the Gallery gives an insight into his remarkable life and the lives of immigrants who arrived on the island from China, more than 100 years ago.

'AS EQUALS – The Oei Women of Java’ charts the lives of three remarkable women - Oei Huilan, Ida Oei Yeap and Lucy Hoo Oei – the daughters and wife of Asia’s richest man at the turn of the century.
Described as ‘Tolstoy’s War & Peace for the Straits Chinese’ by Prof Lien-Hang Nguyen of Columbia University, the book discusses the Chinese diaspora, the modernization of Chinese customs among leading figures, and contrasting Western and Asian viewpoints about women, marriage and duty.

Daryl Yeap is a banker turned author. 'As Equals - the Oei Women of Java' is her second book. She is also the author of 'The King's Chinese'.
ABOUT KWOH SHOO CHEN
Kwoh Shoo Chen is a grassroots cultural worker in voluntarily promoting Chinese cultural activities in Penang though ways such as delivering talks, organizing site visits, and conducting workshops and seminars to the younger generations.

Carrara marble sculpture of a nymph at Homestead. Located by the sea at the Italian garden commissioned by Lim Mah Chye in early 1920s - before Yeap Chor Ee bought over the property.

Homestead. In 1919, Lim Mah Chye commissioned the architects, Stark & McNeil to design this magnificent building along Northam Road (Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah). It was bought by Yeap Chor Ee in early 1930s and later, vested to the Wawasan Education Foundation to establish the Wawasan Open University. Photo taken in 2004.

The bank that Yeap Chor Ee built - Ban Hin Lee Bank. Established in 1918 and incorporated in 1935, it was the only bank with its headquarters based in Penang. It was also the only bank established by a single shareholder in Peninsular Malaysia.
