In the 50's and 60's, many of the restaurants in George Town that served western food were operated by this community. Most of these restaurants which were modelled after the American diners, served a limited menu like beef steak, chicken chop (colloquially called 'Kay Steak') and lamb chop along with milk shakes, ice cream soda and desserts like 'Bomb Alaska'. These were the days of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard and the Beatles when men with slick greasy hair-do's wore tight drain-pipe trousers and ladies with back combed 'omega' hairstyles wear frock dresses and flat tie shoes. Hanging out at these snack bars was the in-thing. Today Yeng Keng Café Bar brings you Hainanese cuisine which is synonymous with Penang, a rare find in the present days.
