Home Tour: A Light-Filled Home for a Family of Seven Effendy Nadzri Design Office transforms an awkwardly laid out house into an elegant yet comfortable home for the family of seven to enjoy.

MH House, USJ

Spatial planning in a home is all about making the space livable and inviting. The entrance is shifted to the left side of the façade to create more privacy of the interior space & creating a sense of journey into the house.

We introduced ” “ in the new layout. Its a transition space between the outdoor and indoor areas where the owners remove their footwear before entering other parts of the home & catchalls for keys, hats & other items.

As you enter the house passing through the mudroom, the courtyard & pocket garden slowly presents itself as the background of the ground floor area. The once mundane & gloomy interiors are now filled with ‘Lightness’.

The narrow pocket garden located between the house and the neighbour are designed with privacy & calmness in mind. A fully functional area as living room extension & meditation space.

A humble cement brick wall that separates the pocket garden and laundry area is susceptible to shadows and lights, becoming the “feature wall” in the living area with strong contrasting background for the tropical plants & trees.

The existing middle courtyard is under-utilised. By filling it in with lush greeneries and a full height operable windows in the main living area; the courtyard now functions as the green lung of the house; connecting indoors and outdoors space.

The materials and design are kept minimal throughout the interiors; featuring clean lines, simple white walls, oak timber, light grey stone and black metal details over cozy lighting and contemporary furniture.

- Main Living Area

KJ House is a private tropical villa located at east of Kuala Lumpur. The architecture & interiors are inspired by old Malay houses & regional tropical resorts.

The grand main living hall is adjacent to the outdoor terrace & pool area, connecting the exterior & interiors. These open areas become lively spaces for big family gatherings just like in traditional Malay houses. Santai Sofa by .home fits perfectly in this space.

The combinations of all these linear compositions, open spaces, local natural materials, rattan & teakwood furniture & landscaping creates a tropical hospitality atmosphere. Currently still under construction.

‘Home with a S(e)oul’

Master

Tranquil design with minimal decoration is stretched out to other spaces including the master bedroom and bathroom.

The master bedroom’s bed frame, bedside table and wall lamp is designed as a single unit, serving its function while maintaining the aesthetics and efficiency of space in the bedroom.

The centrepiece of the master bath is Furo, a custom-made Japanese soaking tub with matte black fittings.

‘Home with a S(e)oul’

As the pandemic forces us to stay at home, it’s important to have an anxiety-free living space that will also shape our well-being. This 3000sqft condominium unit belongs to a family of 4 in Saujana Resort in Klang Valley.

The brief from the client is to have an intimate & calm home with Asian sensibilities, celebrating the clients’ roots. They are also avid collectors of oriental furniture & art pieces and wish to have the pieces displayed throughout the house.

Referring to the traditional Korean house; Hanok. It uses natural elements such as pale oak timber, paper lantern and lattice timber door in their homes. We takes the challenge to incorporate these elements; balancing traditional and modernity in this unit by adding clean lines & geometry, warm lighting, consistent natural pallets & scheme which are visible throughout the house.

Entree way

As you enter the house, you will be greeted by the calming sounds of water from the indoor pond and the indoor tree at the entrée way. The oak wood veneer finish wall completes the introduction mood as you enter the home. The narrow hallway cm gallery area lighting is dim and intimate, creating sense of journey along the hallway to the living area.

Living area

The living area is the heart of the house where friends and family members gather and entertain. Because there is no obstruction or tall buildings surrounding the building, the balcony & living area receives abundance of natural light & ventilation throughout the day with amazing view of the Saujana golf course.

Since the homeowner is an avid art collector; to display their collection, we designed a solid oak timber display shelf that complements with the natural lighting in the house. The family piano placed at the centre creates sensory atmosphere for enjoying music as well as appreciating their art collection in full display.

The furniture placed in the living area is a combination of custom-made furnishings by our very own and bespoke designers Stellarworks and Jaime Hayon & Fritz Hansen to complement the space.

Kitchen

The dry and wet kitchen cabinetry is by Bulthaup Germany & Clean Up Japan. Our scope is to complement the look and feel of the kitchen design to realise the a state-of the-art modern kitchen for the Client.

Dining

The dining room is inspired by the traditional Korean Hanok tea-room with lattice sliding panels and oriental dining set. The custom paper-lantern inspired pendant lights in the dining room comes with dimmer function to create a cosy atmosphere throughout the room. The dining room also has a traditional oriental art called Munjado ('painting of words').

KJ House, Kuala Lumpur

KJ House is a private tropical villa located at the east side of Kuala Lumpur. The architecture & id are inspired by old Malay houses & regional tropical resorts. Working closely with the client, the design process yield a timeless blend of tropical vernacular and contemporary design. We extracted elements, treatment and construction details from Malay kampung houses & redefine it with contemporary settings. Solid Teak & balau wood widely used throughout the house.

Clients private collections of reclaimed railway sleepers become the main feature in the formal dining area. The rustic character of the oxidised iron & aged timber finish over sculptural rattan light enhance the space, blending old & new.

The kitchen area & family dining, the heart of the home. Where the real conversations & ‘’merewang’ take place, is airy, spacious & well lighted. The kitchen island double as preparation area & breakfast spot

The master suite is 2000 sqft space consist of the main bedroom, lounge, work+study area, pantry, his & hers walk-in closet & master ensuite. Separated by layers of timber screen & panels

The combination of natural materials, sophisticated mood lighting & bespoke custom-made furniture & light fixtures creates a tropically calm & peaceful space for the owners to rest.

DSS Residence, Kuala Lumpur

The master bedroom has an uninterrupted view of the lush greenery and gardens from the outdoor lounge area; fit in with proposed custom teak wood bed set, bespoke lighting, earthy color palates, greens and contemporary furniture creates a resort style bedroom.

The plantation shutter proposed in the living room and the master bedroom is not only practical for privacy and ventilation, but also creates sense of timeless and charm to the space.

The room next to the master bedroom is converted into walk a in wardrobe. Continuing the timeless design style, the idea is to create a wardrobe that has the look and feel of a luxurious boutique. Its modern storage made with spray paint timber & rattan weaving is likely to remain relevant for years to come.

DSS Residence, Kuala Lumpur

A 2500sqft condominium unit in Kuala Lumpur, is located on the lower ground and has a pretty view of the lush garden in the condo compound.

The client is a growing family and would like to have a home that is suitable for family and friends gathering. The client is also avid collector of antique ornaments and furniture during their travels from all over the world. As each collection holds beautiful rich historical stories, they wish to have the pieces on display in their new home.

ENDO took the challenge to design a home that resonates with their personality and interest while blending in modern elements and old-world charm into their new home.

The inspired antique archway stands in the entryway of the house as you enter. The subtle white-washed oak panel gives a feeling of a more open-air room to the living area and thus let the furniture and antiques collections as the center of attraction of the house.

To complement the whole warm and coziness of the living room, we proposed our contemporary Santai sofa. The lush sofa sits comfortably 3 persons and is perfect for long lounging over coffee or tea. The sofa material is made out of Aquaclean fabric which prevents from staining and is easy to clean.

Since the unit is located on the lower ground and has the beautiful view of the lush condo garden, we take advantage of the spacious balcony and turn it into an outdoor dining and lounge area. This outdoor area is also perfect to entertain friends and family while enjoying the breezy evening dinners al fresco.

The dining cm dry kitchen and wet kitchen is adjacent to the living area to create more space for entertaining family and friends. The wet kitchen and dry kitchen are hidden behind pivot door & pivot sliding door.

The TV area cm library is separated by a large sliding door from the living room. The separation of this space from the living room is to keep the clutter out of sight and privacy while entertaining family and friends.
