Crowned Lapwing and her crowned little chick.
These guys live and nest on the ground and therefore the chicks needs to camouflage extremely well to avoid being preyed on.
Lapwings and Plovers can pretend to have a broken wing or some sort of injury when a predator approaches the nest, to seem like easy prey while slowly moving away from the nest. When they are far enough from the nest, they will simply fly away and have changed the path of the predator away from their nest.

KUNENE
The site of the spectacular Epupa Falls, which are home to endemic species found nowhere else in the world as well as historic stands of baobab, fig and palm trees.
What a magical location
SHORT-TOED ROCK-THRUSH (Monticola brevipes)
'Monticola' is latin for "an inhabitant of the mountains" and 'brevipes' for "short-footed".
Thus a bird that lives in the mountains and has short 'toes' - pretty straight forward!
BOKMAKIERIE - a beautiful melody seldomly heard on NamNau Habitat.
The species is known for male-female duetting (singing/calling).
By tradition, 'bok' is the call of the male bird, and 'makierie' the immediate response of the female.

SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT NAMIBIAN IMPALAS - a short history
Black-Faced Impala (Aepyceros melampus petersi) are endemic to Namibia as they are now thought to be extinct in Angola.
Herds of black-faced impala were confined to Kunene by the dry 800km expanse of Namibia’s North Central Region, where they formed a sub-species of their own.
WHY ARE THEY ENDANGERED?
Poaching, drought, competition with livestock and interbreeding with the Common Impala was a big threat to Black-faced Impalas. Another reason is trophy hunting; The Black-faced Impala is bigger, and more beautiful than the Common Impala, and also more rare - which made it an ideal Trophy.
In the 1960's Black-Faced Impalas turned from the blink of extinction, when the Namibian Department of Nature Conservation stepped in. The last remaining Impalas (about 250) were captured and released into the Etosha National Park, where they had the opportunity to increase the numbers.
Luckily, all went well and they numbers soon started to rise again. After this the government agreed that Private Game Reserves may have Black-Faced Impalas BUT they are not allowed to have Common Impalas on the same Property, unless there are 2 fences between the two species, as well as a 40km distance between them, to avoid interbreeding again.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO?
The Black-Faced has a dark nose blaze, a longer, bushier tail, a darker coloration and a larger body weight approximately 10kg heavier than the Common Impala.
WHY THE BLACK FACE?
My own theory would be that the black around the face is to absorb sunlight around the eyes in order to see better in the desert sun. (Same as a Cheetah's black tear markings.)
