Understanding the safety and efficacy of innovative medicines across demographic subgroups, which is critical for reducing inequities and improving equity, is hampered by a lack of diversity.
Clinique Research, West Africa's leading indigenous CRO, fills this void by providing clinical trial monitoring and regulatory services to a wide range of sponsors and CROs across the continent.
This allows pharmaceutical companies to develop medicines for which we can be more confident that the outcomes will apply to everyone who will take those medicines in the future.
Every year on May 20, International Clinical Trials Day commemorates the start of the first randomized clinical trials by James Lind in 1747.
Are you a Principal Investigator or medical professional interested in the field of clinical research? Would like to make your clinical research site visible and attractive?
Join us for our first Investigators meet-up, a forum for African research sites to network, exchange ideas, and collaborate.
This quarterly event will provide a fresh and valuable chance to engage in conversations of mutual interest, including updates on current developments and sharing of best practices.
To sign up; send a mail to [email protected]

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE today announced their mRNA-based vaccine candidate, BNT162b2, against SARS-CoV-2 has demonstrated evidence of efficacy against COVID-19 in participants without prior evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, based on the first interim efficacy analysis conducted on November 8, 2020 by an external, independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) from the Phase 3 clinical study.
The Phase 3 clinical trial of BNT162b2 began on July 27 and has enrolled 43,538 participants to date, 38,955 of whom have received a second dose of the vaccine candidate as of November 8, 2020. Approximately 42% of global participants and 30% of U.S. participants have racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. The study also will evaluate the potential for the vaccine candidate to provide protection against COVID-19 in those who have had prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2, as well as vaccine prevention against severe COVID-19 disease.
Based on current projections, Pfizer expects to produce globally up to 50 million vaccine doses in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021.

Israel administered the first dose of its Covid-19 vaccine as the first phase of its clinical trials began on Sunday at Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv.
The first dose was given to 26-year-old volunteer Segev Harel, who will now be monitored for three weeks, to see if he has any side effects and whether he develops antibodies.
The vaccine, which is called BriLife -- a combination of the Hebrew words for health, Israel, and life -- was developed at the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR).
As part of Phase 1 trials, either the vaccine or a placebo will be administered to 80 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 55 at two different hospitals in Israel.
We have been working around the clock leading up to this important day -- the start of clinical trials," said Dr. Shmuel Yithzaki, the head of the Biology Division at the IIBR. "The work of all the hidden heroes in the institute and the hospitals has been poured into a little bottle which has the potential to bring a life-saving vaccine to the citizens of the state of Israel."
The second phase, expected to begin in December, will see 960 healthy volunteers given the vaccine or a placebo. This phase will involve safety tests on the vaccine, to determine the effective dosage, and further examine the vaccine’s effectiveness.
The third phase, expected to begin in April or May 2021, will see more widespread testing with the participation of 30,000 volunteers.
"The true exit from the coronavirus crisis is in the development of vaccines," said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after visiting the hospital. "Therefore, this is a very important day, a day that gives a shot of encouragement."

FACT: Clinical trials are designed for research purposes and as a result, some level of risk is involved.
However, investigational drugs are given to clinical trial participants only after the drugs have gone through a rigorous testing process and scientific evidence indicates that the drug is likely to be effective and safe for use in humans.
In addition, keeping you safe when you volunteer to participate in a clinical trial is a top priority for everyone involved in the trial. All clinical trials are reviewed before they start by an institutional review board (IRB), a committee made up of doctors, scientists and community members who have the responsibility to protect clinical trial participants.
During clinical trials, participants’ safety is frequently assessed and monitored by the researchers.
Nigeria, Guinea, SierraLeone, Liberia remain the epicenters of Lassa Fever in Africa.
Lassa Fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness caused by Lassa virus, a member of the arenavirus family of viruses.
Humans usually become infected with Lassa virus through exposure to food or household items contaminated with urine or faeces of infected Mastomys rats. The disease is endemic in the rodent population in parts of West Africa.
About 80% of people who become infected with Lassa virus have no symptoms. 1 in 5 infections result in severe disease, where the virus affects several organs such as the liver, spleen and kidneys.
Candidate drugs are in early stages of testing and vaccines are in development.
