OT301-Supernova // 20:45 // € 8,50
God Has AIDS / Deus tem AIDS
Gustavo Vinagre, Fábio Leal, Brazil, 82’, 2021
Language: Portuguese Subtitles: English

Forty years after the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic, a person infected with the virus is no longer automatically condemned to death; the disease has become a chronic condition. But in Brazil, where many still directly associate HIV/AIDS with homos*xuality and a promiscuous lifestyle, the stigma surrounding the disease remains high. President Bolsonaro’s hateful rhetoric in recent years has fueled “serophobia,” and his budget cuts are hitting educational programs and clinics. As a consequence, more than 10.000 people a year in Brazil die from this treatable disease.

Seven artists and an activist doctor—all HIV-positive—speak out against the fatal ignorance, but also against racism in the gay scene and the total invisibility of women with HIV/AIDS. Through dance, performance, and poetry, they give HIV-positive people a face. They even manage to take something positive from their serological status: a better understanding of their bodies and their mortality. (Synopsis and still via IDFA)

Film program day 4: SOURA x IQMF

Retrospective: Anyab (Fangs)
Egyptian filmmaker Mohammed Shebl’s ‘Anyab’ (Fangs), released in 1981, is a remake of the musical cult classic ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’. Packing on more vampires and deemed almost too ho******ic to handle, ‘Anyab’ is not only a lost gem of q***r cinema, but also a social commentary on the situation in Egypt, from unemployment of youth to class war, intersecting politics and s*x in the most peculiar ways.
—————————————————————
Anyab will be screened at Supernova Cinema on Sunday, October 31st at 15:00

Beirut by D**e 18:30:
is a researcher, storyteller, and illustrator. In 2018, they created Beirut By D**e, a web-comic series featuring short stories about being q***r in Beirut. Their multi-media page, which tackles personal intersectional topics around gender, s*xuality, and mental health, grew from a small autobiographical project edited on Paint, to a case study of visual activism taught in media and gender courses at the American University of Beirut, Leiden University, SOAS University of London, the University of Chicago, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Home 19:30:
The documentary tells the story of three lovely and brave LGBTQ+ refugees. In their country they’re not accepted because of their s*xuality. At a young age they had to live true traumatic experiences, till the point they decide to leave everything behind and find a new life. Now they settled here, they still have to deal with old sorrow. Despite their experience they found the courage to live true life with a smile on their face.

Love Spells and All That 20:30:
Turkish filmmaker Ümit Ünal’s ‘Love, Spells and All That’, an evocative take on folk tales and forbidden love affairs, tells the story of Eren and Reyhan, two women in love, who were separated by their families once they found out about their affair. Twenty years later, they randomly find each other, with Reyhan believing that Eren’s reappearance was due to a spell done before, therefore embarking on a day-long journey breaking the spell.
