[Expo Bart Nijmegen] • Visit ROOM OF POSSIBILITIES by Isabelle Wenzel, a space for experimentation and play, for trial and error, where the journey is more important than the outcome. Now on view until 21 April at Expo Bart in Nijmegen.

Expo Bart emerges as a playground for free experimentation with movement. As a visitor, you will be introduced to Isabelle's photographic work, be surprised by art installations or fashion objects, or experience your own body, through written instructions from the artist.

'Here the performance connects to my photographic work: it questions how we look at each other, what image we give each other and how we can free ourselves from it. Whether we can let go of our reflection for a moment and just accept: it's okay, I am who I am.'

Upcoming events:
13 April 12.00 - 17.00: Live performance Isabelle Wenzel
14 April 12.00 - 17.00: NYMA open day with performance by various dancers in ROOM OF POSSIBILITIES

[ Art Busan ] • Jeppe Lauge at Art Busan 2024!

Jeppe Lauge (1980, DK) goes out into the world, photographing landscapes, cultivated or otherwise. Being out there in nature is a way to see and find the stories of the landscape. Just as people manipulate nature, he manipulates his photos to construct new landscapes in digital collages on his computer. ‘‘When I see a landscape, I see a complex picture, a shaped space to which we added layers over time. In my work, I'm always searching for ways to excavate the layers to know how to relate to them.’’ A painted landscape then arises on the canvas that evokes both recognition and alienation – for on closer inspection, a pine forest proves to be impossibly dense, and a tree turns out to be composed of countless fragments.

[ Art Busan ] • Bringing Jisan Ahn to Art Busan 2024!

Jisan Ahn (1979, KR) creates oil paintings that exude a poetic and mysterious character. His canvases depict allegorical figures and objects, seemingly born from the profound emotions he infuses them with. Because he had had a carefree childhood, Jisan has always been searching for the feeling of discomfort in himself. When he finds this emotion, he translates it into images with the aim to evoke this discomfort to the viewer as well. In previous work he has accentuated this objective by depicting explosions, slaughtered animals and hunting scenes, yet presently he paints in a more poetic way. The ordinary, the everyday and the repetitive are his subjects.

Art Busan will take place from 10 - 12 May 2024.

1. City tree 4, 2023 by Jisan Ahn. Oil on canvas, 60,5 x 50 cm.
2. Portrait of Jisan Ahn.

[ Art Busan ] • Tamara Muller at Art Busan 2024!

Tamara Muller uses her face in her paintings to tell a universal story. They are not self-portraits in the fundamental sense of the word. She plays a complex role: the personas she inhabits in her work shoot back and forth between combinations of people: man, woman, adult, child, human, animal, perpetrator and victim. By leaving parts of the canvas untouched with simple brush strokes, the focus predominantly is on the characters. They almost always look straight at you. However, Tamara does not want to tell a straight story. It is the interaction between apparent contradictions: the personal and the universal, reality and fiction, and realism and abstraction. Ambivalent in form and content, the images on the canvases are contrived to make the viewer co-actor in these painted cut-and-paste theatres about power, guilt and shame.

Art Busan will take place from 10 - 12 May.

[ Art Busan ] • Presenting an amazing artist duo at Art Busan 2024: Rotteveel Vermeer!

Rotteveel Vermeer, is a Dutch art studio by colourists Jochem Rotteveel and Thomas Vermeer. They explore how colours can affect each other as well as how they affect the mood of the viewer. The result of their efforts is a collaborative series of works, created in the tradition of Jochem’s methodology. With foil and tape, they investigate several boundaries. By folding the foil, they add volume onto flat surfaces, stretching the boundary between two-dimensional and three-dimensional.

[ Art Busan ] • We are very excited to bring Bas Kosters to Art Busan this year!

His stories are expressed in tapestries, puppets, sets, costumes, glass objects, installations, drawings and paintings. He creates worlds inhabited by radiant, alarming and endearing figures that reflect his social engagement. No matter the discipline, Bas works vigorously and with enthusiasm, but he is especially fond of textile and graphic art, which he uses to express and celebrate personal and societal themes. He approaches difficult emotions in a light-footed way, with subtle and sometimes wry humor and his trademark texts. Bas’ fascination for cartoon characters, visualizations and erotica leads to a reality full of friction, full of different views that compete for your attention.

[Event 16 March ] • You don't want to miss this special event! Join us Saturday 16 March for the very last day of Strictly Tapes and Friends with exciting listening sessions by Anan Striker and Mick La Rock!

16.00 - Anan Striker
17.00 - Mick La Rock
Location: Elandsgracht 16, Amsterdam

At 15 (in mid-2003), Anan met one of his teachers; Lord Luuk. Luuk still had a Walkman and a bunch of mixtapes in an era where that really wasn't "in". After all, we already had the disc-man and mini-disc player. After some urging (from Luuk), Anan drummed up his mother's Walkman and carefully listened to the rebirth of his introduction to cassettes; the mixtape. Sixty to ninety minutes of hip-hop mixed and scratched together that made you run, cycle, jump and nod your head faster. Anan was sold. The rest is history.

Mick La Rock, a.k.a Mickey is one of Europe's first female graffiti writers. Together with Jake, this Bonne & Clyde of Dutch graffiti provided described netline maps of the local public transportation company within the exhibition. In addition to these iconic works, Mickey, last but not least, will be performing her cassette collection. A collection to die for; neatly labeled cassettes categorized by year, stored in cassette storage drawers featuring hand-drawn artwork on the covers of cassette sleeves. Mickey knows how to tell wonderful stories with her cassettes, not to mention the contents of the tapes.

[ Artwork highlight ] • Take a look at 'The Morning' series by Tim Wunderink!

Tim collects items he finds on the street and at thrift stores, leaving him with plenty of material to work with. This allows his work to unfold organically, with found objects serving as both the starting point and the material for his assemblages. In these works, he dissociates objects from their original functions and transforms them into something new. Tim does this with only minimal alterations.

Check out our current duo exhibition (Hideen) Trophies by Tim Wunderink & Britte Koolen, on view until 16 March!

17.00 - Rege Satanas
18.00 - DJ Daan (Osdorp Posse)

Tune in on echobox.radio or come to Galerie Bart to attend the session live.

Anan has invited several artists to record a listening session at the gallery. The listening sessions are part of Anan his group exhibition 'Strictly Tapes and Friends' on the second floor of Galerie Bart. On view until 16 March.

As one of the two DJs of Amsterdam's own Osdorp Posse, Daan (a.k.a. Deegmeester Daan) and his crew stood at the foundation of Hiphop in the Netherlands; Nederhop. You know it, with classic crackers like; 'Original Amsterdams', 'Volle Maan' and 'Murderers'.

Besides his enthusiasm on the one's and two's, R2D2's and the Hiphop nights in the Vrankrijk, we can get ready for Dj Daan's cassette collection during Strictly Tapes #33.

Especially for "Strictly Tapes and Friends," Echobox Radio resident Rege Satanas is hosting a radio show regarding his cassette collection from the gallery. This collection is nothing compared to his record and CD collection. That makes it no less listen-worthy with great stories, knowledge and experience, most likely dressed in an exceptional camouflage suit. Tune in at echobox.radio or join us at Galerie Bart.

Inspired by the words of John Maeda: ‘‘When there is less, we appreciate everything much more’’, her work consists of minimalist, sculptural installations and wall sculptures. Driven by the minimalistic principles including reuse, organisation and reduction, Britte her work embraces our universal desire to create order out of chaos. It is necessary, or rather urgent to pause, take a moment, investigate and search for the essentials.

[ Opening 01.03] • Very exciting news! On 1 March we are opening 'Strictly Tapes and Friends' a group exhibition and series of events on the second floor of Galerie Bart about the cassette tape as a means of communication. Bart invited artist Anan Striker, and Striker in turn invited a motley crew of visual artists, disc jockeys, word artists, graffiti writers, MCs, and a photographer.

The result is a treasure chest brimming with personal yet universal stories, which, combined with forgotten sounds, have been fused into an exhibition enhanced with listening sessions.

Listen to the gallery owner's cassette collection. Find your way on the marker-marked map of the Amsterdam subway. A dragonfly floats through magnetic fields. A plasterboard basketball bounces off the wall.

In a visually saturated world, Strictly Tapes reminds us of the raw beauty of imperfection. Step into this analogue time machine through the present, past and future.

[ Insta Takeover ] • Hi everyone, we, Tim Wunderink and Britte Koolen will be taking over Galerie Bart's Instagram today! We are currently showing our work in the exhibition (Hidden) Trophies.

The idea of making a work together and challenging each other in it has been with us for a while. This seemed the perfect moment to take the first step. Together, we created a work for the garden of Galerie Bart. During this process, the focus was not so much on the end result, but on the collaboration, creating an art piece together. We started looking for materials while walking. These walks also made for good conversations where we learned a lot from each other and about ourselves.

Are you curious to see what came out of our collaboration? Come to the unveiling of the work 'Blue Mountain' on Saturday, where we will tell more about the collaboration alongside the work.

The opening takes place on Saturday 17 February from 15.00 - 18.00 at Elandsgracht 16, Amsterdam.

It is necessary, or rather urgent to pause, take a moment, investigate and search for the essentials. When creating her sculptures, Britte restricts herself to basic geometrical shapes: the circle, the rectangle and the square. Her use of colour is also steadfast, as she remains faithful to the same shades of red, yellow, purple and black, which regularly recur in her installations and wall sculptures.

[Art Rotterdam 2024 ] • Galerie Bart at Art Rotterdam with Marleen Sleeuwits, Nomin Zezegmaa and Kevin Bauer! Find us at booth no. 90.

Marleen Sleeuwits (1980, NL) was approached by Centre Photographique in Rouen (FR) for a residency and tasked with delving into local cultural heritage. She visited local abandoned mining caves along the Seine and gothic architecture made from typical type of limestone found along the Seine. Marleen then translated these into her signature style. With her bold use of colour and abstracted architectural structures, she creates a poetic visual narrative.

Nomin Zezegmaa (1992, DE/MN) explores the connections between history, the natural world and spiritual dimensions, drawing inspiration from Mongolian cosmogony. She uses natural elements like earth, wooden branches, stones, minerals, and natural fibres. Through her diverse art practices, she aims to encourage viewers to think about us as human beings and our bodies and their impact on the natural world.

Kevin Bauer (1987, NL) uses his work to reflect on the relentlessly growing prosperity and its consequences. He has also become fascinated by big monuments and disused infrastructures, in which these elements bear witness to lost civilisations. He draws inspiration from themes of impermanence, erosion and ageing. Kevin manipulates his subjects and creates compositions that play with time, space and function.

During Art Rotterdam, Kevin shows the series Civiliet (Ci), referring to the periodic table of elements. With these objects, Kevin wonders what can be found in the present era in the distant future, while also questioning the extent of contemporary production.
