Galerie Mokum

Viewpoints through open doors👀
Carlos Morago likes to play with different viewpoints and perspectives in his work, often painting scenes that are based in one space yet look into another. Whether through an open door, window, or down a corridor, Morago's compositions draw the viewer's eye into his paintings. This effect creates a suspenseful and mysterious atmosphere, as the viewer is unaware of what lies in the next room.
Nature plays a large role in Morago's work. He often paints gardens, potted plants and flowers as his subjects. His still lives are extreemely poetic, with compositions that have a splendid harmony evoking a profound sense of stillness.
Exhibition on view until 29 June!
Please join us tomorrow for the opening of Carlos Morago's solo show!
From 4 - 6 PM we will be serving drinks and bites at the gallery in celebration of our latest exhibition!🥂
Morago’s interest in interior and architectural spaces is predominant throughout his work. Spaces are often observed through half-open doors or windows, with rooms or views partly hidden. In doing this, Morago plays with the mood, adding suspense and mystery to each work.
Spring Showcase: Eline Brontsema
For her prints, Eline Brontsema makes use of the reduction technique: the print is created from a single wooden plate. Part of the plate is cut out, so that the higher parts absorb ink and can be printed. After that, the work needs to dry and the next part can be cut out. To make editions, this process must be repeated. Then the second color can be printed.
While traditionally this woodcut technique uses a limited amount of colours, Eline makes detailed prints with many different colour layers, which gives her work painterly qualities. This time consuming way of working requires a lot of patience. The atmosphere of a place plays an important role in her work. By using colour and light, she tries to create a world where you would like to be.
On view now in the Spring Showcase: 20 April - 25 May
Spring Showcase: Gustav Sundin
Gustav Sundin delves into the intricacies of everyday life, capturing moments that often escape our notice. Through intimate portrayals of interiors and still lifes, he strives to reveal life in its raw and unfiltered form, eschewing the polished facades we often present to the world.

Spring Showcase: Florens Kool
'In my work I try to connect my interest in classical painting subjects, like expression of materials, color- and shadow effects, perspective and illusionism, to a more contemporary interpretation of this. I'm interested in a form of realism where everyday subjectmatter is placed within balanced compositions. I put a strong emphasis on the use of paint and how this relates to the material depicted.
I try to aim, through its size and precision, for an attentive gaze from te viewer. By trying to accurately depicting various prosaic details the viewer comes in contact with images that would normally, in all its banality, pass us by. In a time where we are repeatedly confronted with quick and sensational impulses, often aimed at consumption or entertainment, I hope my work gives room for the less sensational , but ever present, aspects of our everyday surroundings.'

Spring Showcase: Edmond Praybe
Edmond uses still life as a vehicle for intense observation paired with abstract structure, rhythm, and color. His objects hold deep personal significance, each carrying memories of people, places, and moments. He arranges these items into unassuming vignettes, creating a narrative where elements reappear like characters in a story. While figures occasionally emerge, the human presence is mostly implied through daily artifacts meticulously placed within the scene.
On view now in the Spring Showcase: 20 April – 25 May
Spring Showcase: Bea Sarrias
Bea Sarrias paints architectural spaces inspired by famous architects.
She captures the character or architecture painting 'portrait' spaces, paying close attention to the careful handling of perspective, light, color, and a clean brushwork. Despite the complete lack of human figures in her scenes, Sarrias is able to evoke the sense of inhabitation through her representations of interior spaces. This allows the viewer to glimpse the intention of bringing the living subjects that have created a memory of the place through the objects that compose the scenes.
On view now in the Spring Showcase: 20 April – 25 May
Spring Showcase: Hanie Soltani
Hanie Soltani paints intimate portraits of women in domestic spaces. Using a mix of medias from gauche to oil and pencil drawings to compose her scenes, she crafts tender portrayals of women and the beauty and complexities of human emotion.
