It's International Women's Day! Today, equal rights and opportunities for women are the centre of attention. That is why we also take a moment to point out women who have meant a lot to our faculty. Such as Christine Mohrmann, the first female professor at Radboud University and the faculty (1952). Or Ida Groenewout, student of Classical Archeology who was appointed as the first female president (praeses) of the Club of Protestant Students, part of the Nijmegen Student Corps Carolus Magnus (1935). You can read more on the timeline that will be exhibited in the Erasmus building from Monday.

⚠Be aware of phone scams! ⚠
We were informed by police that many young people with an international background are being digitally scammed. They receive a call from ‘a government agency’ and are told that they are on an international arrest warrant list, or that they have to pay a big fine. The ‘employee’ on the line often has a lot of personal information such as a social security number (BSN) and therefore sounds credible. This ‘employee’ wants to help you to get you off this list. For this, they ask to install software for example TeamViewer or Anydesk. With this software, the scammer can look at the bank details and transfer money to another account without any notice. This is a scam, no government agency will contact you by phone.

What to do in this situation?
Hang up immediately. Even when in doubt. Sometimes scammers will give you a phone number, but this is fake as well. Always look up the correct number yourself and wait until you get someone on the line with whom you can verify the call. Please inform your family, friends and acquaintances about this scam and warn them.

“I was very shy during my own orientation week: I came to Nijmegen and didn't know anyone here. Fortunately, I had mentors who immediately started a conversation and were interested in me: this way, it was easier to open up. At the end of the Radboud Intro, I had a whole new group of friends, and I wish that for everyone.

The most important thing for me is that everyone feels safe and at ease during the Intro. Therefore I always make clear to all participants that they are welcome here and can come to their mentors for everything. The preparation for the Intro already starts in January, with training sessions from the university among other things. Everything is well prepared, so I am confident everything will turn out fine. Still, it's always a bit scary to be a mentor, because ultimately you are responsible for a group of new students and you have to take that seriously.

I’m mostly looking forward to getting to know all the new students in my study programme next week. Art history is a small bachelor's programme, so everyone knows each other well. That makes the atmosphere very personal and that's nice. I think it's great to see that both the current students and the lecturers of my study programme are so involved and work hard to make studying a pleasant time for everyone. My tip for the new students is not to be too nervous: everything will be fine and your mentors are always there for you. Make the most of it!”

- Fay Achterhof, bachelor’s student of art history and mentor during the Radboud Intro

Today it is Keti Koti: the national celebration of the Dutch slavery abolition. Officially, slavery was abolished on 1 July 1863, but in reality, at least ten years went by before slavery truly ended for everyone. In the entrance hallway of the Erasmus Building you can now visit the exhibition ‘Mens als bezit’ (‘People as property’), about slavery and its aftermath. The exhibition will be up until halfway through September and is part of an extensive research project on the history of slavery by prof. Jan Kok, Coen van Galen, Rick Mourits and Thunnis van Oort together with many volunteers. Want to know more about this project? bit.ly/3ywobO8.
