On the 20th of October, the MA students in Transatlantic Studies at Radboud University went on a field trip to The Hague as the final session of our course 'The Foundations of Transatlantic Relations'. We visited the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Canadian Embassy, and the Hague Center for Strategic Studies and discussed the current state and possible developments of Transatlantic relations in light of the impending US elections, war in Ukraine and US-China relations. The insightful opinions and experiences of the experts from the diverse set of organizations were a welcome addition to the theory covered in class.

USA Nijmegen on tour in New Orleans! This week 35 students and 3 staffers will be in the Big Easy. The (long!) trip went well, but traveling by public transport with a group that big turned out to be a challenge but doable, now it’s time to start the program!

The deadline is coming up soon, April 14. The event will take place on June 22. So you will have plenty of time to prepare for the presentation (ca. 15 minutes, PPPs are welcome). More information will be posted later this month. All you need to do at this point is to send a title and a short pitch what your talk will be about. Please see the cfp below.

American Soft Power at Work in Nijmegen

As part of Frank`s seminar on American Culture in Global Contexts and Albertine`s seminar on Foundations of Transatlantic Relations, Master Students of our Transatlantic Studies program visited the exhibition "Nijmegen en het Marshallplan" to trace the visual DNA of the Marshall Plan, to investigate the mechanisms of Americanization, and to critically evaluate the origins of a Dutch consumer society American-style after WWII. Albertine and Jorrit, the curators of the exhibition, offered new insights on their research and how to translate results for a wider audience in public spaces. Today, 75 years ago, U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall delivered a short commencement speech at Harvard which initiated the post-war European Aid Program commonly known as the Marshall Plan.
My colleagues at Radboud, Albertine Bloemendal and Jorrit van den Berk, honored this moment at Amerikanistendag last Friday at the RIAS with a special edition of GESCHIEDENIS Magazine dedicated to the historical impact of the Marshall Plan. In a little ceremony, the very first edition, fresh from the press, was cordially presented to Jennifer DeWitt Walsh, the American Consul General, Amsterdam. This time it was not only the Europeans but most of all the American representative who expressed her gratitude honoring the efforts of the Dutch American Studies team coordinated by Albertine and Jorrit. The issue will be available on Tuesday, June 7, with contributions by other Radboud team players: Lennaert van Heumen (writing on the challenge of collaborating with the former enemy via the Marshall Plan), Albertine and Lisette Brussee (on the MP and Dutch-American cooperation in water management), Frank Mehring (on Dutch Marshall Plan animation films to "reorient" West German children) and Jaap Verheul (on the Americanization of the Dutch steel industry.) Additional articles are contributed by Harm Zwarts from Groningen (on the impact of new American tractors), Diederik Oostijk from Amsterdam (on the Marshall bells as a sign of Dutch gratitude), and Marja Roholl from Amsterdam (on the general impact of the Marshall Plan on Dutch citizens, the comprehensive media campaign, and the roots of the Cold War). Congrats to a fantastic event and kick-off into a Marshall Plan year with many other events rangig from expositions to various online activities. We will keep you posted, promised! As part of the course “The Foundations of Transatlantic Studies: Domestic Politics and International Relations" some of our MA students went on a field trip to The Hague. Karla Kiefer was one of them and you can read about her experience below:

"Last week as MA students in Transatlantic Studies, we had the amazing opportunity to visit the US embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Den Haag with our professor Albertine Bloemendal. We had a wonderful talk with Foreign Service Officer Shane Siegel at the embassy, who shared his experience and knowledge about being a diplomat.

In the afternoon, we got some great insight into the bilateral relations between the US and the Netherlands both past and present. We had a presentation by Sam van Damme who explained how and why the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is so important and what this means when it comes to international relations.

At both events, we got to ask questions and learn more about these career paths. Although this excursion was a great way to interact with my classmates, it was also very insightful to see where our studies can take us and how important and useful this study is. What was very intriguing is that the discussions we have in class are very similar to the debates and discussions that take place at these political institutions.

This was a delight to understand more about international relations, diplomacy and politics from a practical point of view. Waking up super early to travel from Nijmegen to Den Haag was worth it. We also got to explore the beautiful city of Den Haag."

How does a policy paper differ from a research paper? Which factors, aside from content, make your policy paper stand out?

Two students from our MA program in Transatlantic Studies, Femke Verbeek and Bavo Oost, and instructor Albertine Bloemendal discuss that question in the podcast series "De Atlantische Blik", a publication by the "Jonge Atlantici".

Together with fellow students, Bavo and Femke created a policy paper about possible European approaches to the Biden administration for the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs, as part of the MA course "Current Issues in Transatlantic Studies". They discuss their experience in the podcast.

Dear friends and alumni of our American Studies program:

Last Friday, the first cohort of our new Master in TRANSATLANTIC STUDIES celebrated with us a pre-ID4 launching event: Our new website MAPPING THE AMERICAN CENTURY, the brainchild of Jorrit van der Berk, programmed by Milan Lobik, offers a comprehensive overview of our Master student projects and makes their research visible to the public. The website will grow each year based on further work by the next generation of our Master students. In his introductory remarks, Frank praised the remarkable discipline, motivation and dedication of our first cohort of Master students during extraordinary times. Mathilde outlined the transatlantic PROJECT TURTLE, which is based on student work regaring the involvement of Native Americans in the liberation of Nijmegen. Hopefully, we can erect a public memorial in the future to make this inspiring chapter of history come to live. At the end, Jaap looked into the future of our program and pointed towards the possibility of a European-American virtual classroom which promises to add a new dimension to next year`s RUDESA spring academy. Afterwards, we enjoyed the beautiful Friday late afternoon with good vibrations and spirits at the CultuurCafe.

Life is a tragedy full of joy

Met verslagenheid en droefenis hebben we kennis genomen van het overlijden van onze oud-studente Claire Mesman, op zondag 21 maart. Na haar propedeuse Rechten (2001) stroomde Claire in bij Amerikanistiek, toen nog een post-propedeutische doctoraalstudie. Ze studeerde bij ons van 2001-2004. Behalve in de kernvakken over Amerikaanse geschiedenis, politiek en literatuur vond Claire een nieuwe intellectuele uitdaging vooral in de cursus Amerikaanse kunst van Wouter Weijers, die zij met een excellent resultaat afsloot. Onder zijn begeleiding schreef ze ook haar doctoraalscriptie, over de Amerikaanse fotograaf Edward S. Curtis, wiens representaties van Amerikaanse Indianen zij analyseerde als culturele constructies die net zozeer inzicht gaven in de vorming van een Amerikaans zelfbeeld als in de werkelijkheid van het Indiaanse leven. Haar scriptie werd gehonoreerd met een mooie 8, maar het was, zoals ze zelf schreef, een “hard-won” overwinning. Al tijdens haar studie werd Claire geplaagd door zeer ernstige gezondheidsproblemen, die leidde tot uitstel en uitval, zware medicatie, en periodieke ziekenhuisopnames. Maar Claire, veeleisend voor zichzelf en terughoudend over haar ziekte, werkte naar de finishlijn met bewonderenswaardige consistentie en volharding. Ze wilde haar gezondheid niet gebruiken als excuus, en hield haar problemen met longen, bindweefsel, botten en gewrichten liever voor zich. Als ze er al over sprak deed ze dat – ik citeer uit de laudatio van Wouter Weijers – “op een zeer nonchalante, haast onverschillige toon, met een nauwelijks waar te nemen, maar karakteristiek licht schouderophalen en een verontschuldigende glimlach.” Ze had veel waardering voor de loyale steun en begrip die zij bij de opleiding vond, vooral in de persoon van haar docent en studieadviseur Jac Geurts.
Een van de hoogtepunten van haar studietijd was haar deelname, met zo’n veertig medestudenten, aan de studiereis naar San Francisco in het vroege voorjaar van 2003, juist toen de VS Irak aanvielen, en midden in de SARS-epidemie. Tijdens de heenvlucht kreeg ze dermate acute ademhalingsnood dat haar zuurstof moest worden toegediend en ze bij landing in San Francisco meteen met voorrang door een paramedisch team naar het ziekenhuis werd vervoerd. Ook gedurende de rest van de studiereis werd ze gekweld door haar longen, en moest ze een paar keer de nacht in het ziekenhuis doorbrengen. Ze baarde haar begeleiders en medestudenten grote zorgen, maar zelf trad ze haar aandoening moedig en levenslustig tegemoet, zij het ook ietwat koppig en roekeloos. Op mijn netvlies staat het beeld van Claire en Albertine, met wie zij tijdens de reis een hechte en levenslange vriendschap begon: twee jonge ondeugende vrouwen die – tegen alle medisch advies in – blootvoets en dartel spartelend liepen te spelen en spetteren langs de waterlijn van San Francisco Bay, met links uitzicht op de magische Golden Gate Bridge, en rechts op gevangenis eiland Alcatraz. Het moment lijkt, terugkijkend, haast symbolisch: enerzijds de gouden g***s van een gedroomd paradijselijk leven dat vervaagt in de opdoemende mist, anderzijds een oneerlijke gevangenschap in pijn en lijden.
Na haar studie deed Claire een tweejarig rijkstraineeship bij het Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport; een deel daarvan werkte zij in Ottawa bij de Nederlandse Ambassade in Canada. Daar had ze een heerlijke tijd, en Canada had altijd een warm plaatsje in haar hart. Vanaf 2006 werkte ze als beleidsadviseur bij Actal, een adviescollege voor regering en Staten Generaal over toetsing van regeldruk. Ze was ook zeer actief voor D66 in Den Haag.

Voordat ze Amerikanistiek kwam studeren was Claire een hartstochtelijk hardloopster en hockeyster. De strijdbaarheid, het fanatisme en het doorzettingsvermogen van een sportvrouw kenmerkte ook haar gevecht tegen een chronische aandoening van het bindweefsel – ze leed aan een variant van EDS, het Syndroom van Ehlers-Danlos – maar ze streed ook vol passie vóór het leven: daarbij zocht ze ook moedwillig de grenzen op – en soms ging ze er overheen. Uiteindelijk belandde ze in een rolstoel. Ze kon niet altijd geloven dat artsen en verpleegkundigen ook het beste met haar voor hadden. Maar ondanks een schijnbaar eindeloze en onbenoembare reeks van operaties, complicaties, ontstekingen en botontwrichtingen, en voortdurende problemen met longen en ademhaling, trad ze haar ziekte tegemoet met levenslust, moed, en haast onvoorstelbare veerkracht. Soms, als ze zich door haar lichaam weer eens in de steek gelaten voelde, was ze boos, opstandig, roekeloos en recalcitrant, tegendraads en tergend; dan weer grapte ze over haar lot met wrange of hilarische humor. Altijd vond ze troost en warmte bij haar geliefde katten – en bovenal bij haar vele vrienden en vriendinnen, zowel vanuit haar studietijd als vanuit de internationale gemeenschap van EDS-patienten, met wie ze contacten onderhield via sociale media.
Claire vocht een ongelijke strijd – against all odds. Uiteindelijk gaf Corona haar de laatste zet. Haar dood kwam vroeg – Claire werd 40 jaar – maar was ook het genadig einde van een gekweld leven. Terugdenkend aan San Francisco, probeer ik troost te vinden in de gedachte dat ze nu eindelijk ontsnapt is uit haar Alcatraz en de Golden Gate-way heeft gevonden naar licht, lucht en verlossing.
We blijven verslagen achter aan de waterlijn, maar koesteren de herinnering aan Claire als een sociaal en warm-voelend mens, sensitief, intelligent, witty and wise, die – tegen alle mogelijke en onmogelijke weerstand in – het leven bleef omhelzen. We wensen Claire’s naaste familie en vrienden alle moed, kracht en wijsheid toe om dit immense gemis te dragen.

In memoriam Jeroen van Hilten

Met verslagenheid, droefenis en verbijstering hebben we kennis genomen van het overlijden van onze oud-student Amerikanistiek Jeroen van Hilten. Jeroen (1985) studeerde Amerikanistiek aan de Radboud Universiteit van 2003 tot 2007, en behaalde zowel zijn propedeuse (2004), bachelor (2006) als master (2007) cm laude. Binnen de Amerikanistiek ging zijn belangstelling vooral uit naar de Amerikaanse geschiedenis en politiek, het rechtssysteem en bedrijfsleven – hij volgde de zogeheten politiek-economische variant. In 2005 werd hij uitgeselecteerd om een semester te studeren aan de University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, waar hij cursussen volgde over American Business, The American City, Native Americans en American Constitutional History. Terug in Nijmegen deed hij de Minor Canadian Studies, met de focus op Canadian Business, Politics and Society, en liep hij stage bij Buysse Immigration (de visa-specialist voor o.a. de VS en Canada). Hij schreef zijn bachelor scriptie (over “Abraham Lincoln: Protector and Shaper of a More Perfect Union”) en zijn master scriptie (“A Constitutional Controversy Unsolved. America’s Quest to Balance National Security, the Separation of Powers and Civil Liberties”) onder begeleiding van dr. J. Geurts. Vanuit Nijmegen hebben we zijn masterscriptie voorgedragen voor de Theodor Roosevelt American History Award van het toenmalige Roosevelt Study Center. Een indrukwekkend academisch portfolio.
Jeroen was een alom gewaardeerd en in vele opzichten opmerkelijke student. Hij was solide van lichaamsbouw – hij was een fervent beoefenaar van American Football, trainer en bestuurslid van de Nijmegen Pirates, stond ook op de sportvelden in North Carolina zijn mannetje, en hing op de afdeling trots affiches op dat in 2010 de Tulip Bowl in Nijmegen plaatsvond – maar bovenal was hij solide van karakter. Met zijn open, eerlijke blik gaf hij, en kreeg hij, vertrouwen van eenieder, staf of student, die met hem van doen had. Maar bovenal was hij een levenslustige, opgeruimde, daadkrachtige, pientere, en initiatief-rijke student, sociaal bewogen, communicatief, vriendelijk en beleefd, met een groot hart voor zijn vak (Amerikanistiek), die een sterke belofte voor de toekomst in zich droeg. Hij was zeer betrokken bij het wel en wee van de opleiding, en kon, als weinigen, mensen motiveren, enthousiasmeren, in beweging krijgen. Als lid van de Opleidingscommissie Engelse Taal en Cultuur was hij kritisch, creatief, en pro-actief. Hij maakte zich sterk voor de destijds nieuwe vorm van studie-evaluatie via panelgesprekken, zette zich belangeloos en enthousiast in als voorlichter over Amerikanistiek, promootte het belang van Study Abroad, en participeerde in bijeenkomsten over career perspectives na de studie.
Na zijn studie Amerikanistiek volgde hij de eerstegraads lerarenopleiding aan de Radboud Docenten Academie (2007-2008). Als docent was Jeroen een natural, bevlogen en gepassioneerd, mens-gericht, pedagogisch sterk, en didactisch creatief. Hij vond in het leraarschap Engels een gedroomde manier om “zijn” Amerikanistiek praktisch en intellectueel, menselijk en maatschappelijk zin te geven. Jonge mensen op weg helpen naar verwezenlijking van hun talenten was zijn drijfveer. Op het Nijmeegse Dominicus College (van 2007 tot 2011, eerst als LIO, toen als docent Engels) spande hij zich in om Amerika als doelcultuur in de sectie Engels op de radar te krijgen, stimuleerde hij profielwerkstukken over “De invloed van Amerika op Nederland op het gebied van eten, popular culture, en taal”, en organiseerde hij activiteiten rond de Amerikaanse presidents-verkiezingen van 2008. Na een discussie van leerlingen met een Amerikaanse uitwisselingsstudent, rapporteerde hij: “Mijn 6 VWO leerlingen waren erg enthousiast en stelden veel kritische vragen. Ik weet zeker dat er nu al anders tegen Amerika en de verkiezingen wordt aangekeken dan vanochtend. Een gouden leermoment dus!” Op Dominicus zette hij zich in voor een “versterkt” Engels traject, en in 2008 nodigde hij een oud-docent uit om een voordracht te houden bij de uitreiking van de Cambridge Certificates. Steeds wist hij de weg terug naar de opleiding te vinden, voor samenwerking of stimulans, het aanleveren van expertise, of een kop koffie in de Skylounge van het Erasmusgebouw. Dat laatste vooral na dat hij in 2014 was teruggekeerd naar zijn alma mater – “het oude nest,” zoals hij zei – als vakdidacticus Engels bij de Radboud Docenten Academie (2014-2017), om zijn pedagogische en didactische vaardigheden en ervaringen in te zetten voor toekomstige generaties docenten Engels. Sinds 2011 was hij werkzaam als docent Engels aan het Jeroen Bosch College in Den Bosch, waar hij zich sterk maakte voor het Tweetalig Onderwijs, en met verve leiding gaf aan de afdeling die hij had opgezet. In 2016 organiseerde hij ook in Den Bosch een evenement in het kader van de Amerikaanse verkiezingen.
We koesteren de herinnering aan Jeroen als een bijzondere oud-student, die, tijdens zijn studie en daarna, veeleisend was voor zichzelf, maar mild en opbouwend in zijn oordeel over anderen. In zijn gedrevenheid bleef hij bescheiden, en bovenal verbindend en inspirerend. Een mooi mens, die zijn talenten optimaal realiseerde.
We blijven verslagen achter met onze herinneringen, en we wensen Jeroens partner, zijn twee kinderen, en zijn naaste familie en vrienden alle moed, kracht en wijsheid toe om het gemis te dragen.

As the academic year comes to an end so does my time as Facebook editor. For the past three years I filled the page with content. I particularly enjoyed the personal stories from our students studying abroad or interning at various companies, the success stories of our alumni, and of course the dedication of our staff. I will spend these remaining months focusing solely on writing my dissertation. (A little bit like the cartoon!) Thank you all for contributing and making this page a succes. Till we meet again!
