On June 19th, Brazilian Cinema Day is celebrated! It is a time to honor the richness and diversity of national productions that move us, make us laugh, and make us think. From the first images captured by pioneers to contemporary blockbusters, Brazilian cinema is full of memorable stories and characters.
📽️ This date honors Affonso Segreto, one of Brazil’s first filmmakers. In 1898, he recorded the first images of Brazil aboard the ship Brésil after taking a cinematography course in France. The scenes captured the beauty of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro. Some historians, however, claim that possible recordings in Petrópolis in 1897 with Thomas Edison’s equipment could be the first Brazilian film. Regardless, the name "Segreto" has been synonymous with pioneering Brazilian cinema ever since.
🌍 Brazil has stood out internationally with award-winning films like "Central Station" (1998), nominated for an Oscar, and "City of God" (2002), which received four Oscar nominations. "Elite Squad" (2007) won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, showcasing the strength of national productions.
🎥 Brazil is also known for its documentaries. "Bus 174" (2002) and "The Edge of Democracy" (2019) have gained global recognition, with the latter being nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar.
📊 The Brazilian cinema market continues to grow. In 2023 alone, over 114 million tickets were sold, showing how much the Brazilian audience values (national) film productions.
Let us pay tribute to the filmmakers, screenwriters, actors, and all the professionals who dedicate their lives to telling stories that reflect our culture, challenges, and joys. How about binging some classics today? Movies like "Central Station," "City of God," "Elite Squad," and "A Dog’s Will" showcase the talent and creativity of our cinema.
What is your favorite Brazilian movie? Share with us in the comments! 🎥🇧🇷
