What an amazing and creative day we had at our Matisse workshop!

With a nearly full house of talented participants, we explored bold and beautiful themes, from cats chasing fish to still lifes and the French Riviera. We truly embraced the spirit of Matisse, using every color on the palette without holding back. This was one of our most colorful workshops to date, and though it’s impossible to share everything we painted, the smiles on everyone’s faces say it all.

A lot goes on behind the scenes to make a day like this possible—planning the theme, deciding on the date, preparing reference images, and sharing ideas on a personal level, making attendees feel that they can paint and really well. It’s a labor of love, but seeing everyone leave with a content heart makes it all worthwhile.

I hope you all feel as fulfilled as I do, knowing that we’ve created something special together. I’d say we’ve succeeded! 🙏🏽

Our today’s acrylic painting Monet’s inspired workshop was fun-tastic :). Our artist members painted works inspired by Monet’s water garden. Each artist brought their unique style to the theme, resulting in a wonderfully varied collection of works.

They chose tones and colors based on their personal preferences and personalities, ranging from light and bright to warm and cool contrasts.

It’s amazing to see idea come to life in such different expressions. Thank you for joining; you all add extra colors to this world. I’m very proud of each and every one of you. The day was truly wonderful, filled with new connections and the joy of seeing familiar and new faces alike.

We’ve already scheduled the next workshop for August 18. It will be a bit longer to make the most of the summer holiday. Matisse is in my mind for the next month’s theme.

Here is the work I promised to paint for our next workshop and bring at the location. This painting I quickly completed in three hours, setting a timer to challenge myself and create a reference for our workshop. It was indeed fun to paint with brushes, as I typically use palette knives for my own work. While this may not be a perfect artwork, the main goal is to explain the usage of colors. I’ve provided a brief description to help you understand the color choices.

1. Colour Harmony: Using brilliant blue, ultramarine, and violet together creates a smooth and pleasing effect because these colors are close to each other on the color wheel.

2. Contrast: Adding a little orange and yellow ochre creates a nice balance because these colors are opposite blue and violet on the color wheel, making the painting more interesting.

3. Depth: Mixing dark brown and purple for the dark areas adds depth.

4. Natural Look: These colors reflect the natural beauty of a waterlily pond. The blues represent water, while the violet and touches of white and pink for the waterlily flowers, mix of green is for the pads.

5. Mood: The cool blues and violets create a calm feeling, while the small amounts of orange and yellow add a bit of warmth and light.

Using these colors demonstrates how they work together to make a painting both beautiful and thoughtful. While you can feel free to use colors as you like, I believe it’s important to learn the rules before breaking them. Understanding color theory can enhance your creativity.

Yesterday at our “Watercolour Painting Workshop”

What an incredible day at the “Feathers and Flare” workshop! The turnout was fantastic, and everyone’s paintings turned out beautifully. From flamingos to peacocks, each canvas was a unique masterpiece, and the quality of the work was exceptional—everyone truly painted like pros. Time flew by as we enjoyed creating art together.

The connections we form during these workshops are always heartwarming. Seeing friends leave together, laugh, sip drinks, and later party together brings me immense joy ❤️

Our Klimt’s Garden workshop today was outstanding, with a packed house of 21 artists. ❤

In the morning, as I scrolled through the images I sent out for reference, doubts crept in. The ambitious and difficult references left me questioning how the day will be and would 3-4 hours will be enough for the theme we selected?

However, as I set up early at our favorite location, I hoped for the best.

We started with having no wrinkles and four hours flew by. Each and everyone painted something different – a flower-filled river, a woman and poppy garden, cat in meadow, a childhood memory in grandma’s garden. Everyone used their memories and imagination brilliantly.

It was amazing to see everyone’s unique take on the theme, even though they strayed from the original pictures.

Our artist’s group was so diverse – we had makers, digital creators, homemakers, researchers, photographers and even mathematicians! And working and painting together felt like a big, creative party.

A big and special thanks to for snapping some awesome photos during the workshop. Great to know an amazing photographer and let’s stay connected 🙏🏽

As we wrap up, I’m filled with gratitude for everyone who joined, filled the day with their creativity.
Our next event awaits on June 2nd, promising another beautiful theme and another opportunity to create together.

Yesterday's open studio day was packed with familiar faces and our members, all excited to learn watercolor techniques and have fun painting landscapes with acrylics. And let me tell you, some of my absolute favorites were there (You know who you are) ❤ .

Today was just like yesterday - our workshop was fully booked a month ago. Twenty-two enthusiastic participants showed up without missing a beat, all the way from Leiden, Eindhoven, De Hague, Dordrecht. Even though a few left early, the rest of us stayed until the end, not wanting to miss a moment of the creativity (I spotted most of you downstairs having coffee and food together and this made me smile and a bit jealous in a good way as I was hungry and busy packing up)

The atmosphere buzzed with laughter, learning, stories, and real connections, making the whole experience awesome for everyone. However, behind the scenes, the preparation for such workshops extends far beyond the four-hour session. Each workshop requires meticulous planning, from curating images of varying difficulty levels to ensuring everyone has a suitable painting spot, choosing the subject what they want to paint, managing countless emails and messages discussing participants' painting preferences, addressing their queries and doubts, and providing guidance to those who stay till the end to refine their work.

The responsibility weighs heavily on me and there's a quiet determination that drives me forward. It's a commitment to authenticity, to ensuring that every participant feels seen, heard, and valued. Because ultimately, it's not about filling seats. It's about fostering a safe space where everyone feels welcome, where their creativity can flourish without fear or judgment.

As I'm getting ready for the next workshop, working on everyone's desire for a technique class at my studio, The May workshop at Bunk Utrecht is already nearly full, even though I haven't officially announced it yet (I know, it's not really fair, but I'm working on it 😛).

During this introductory session, we'll cover the fundamental techniques and concepts essential for watercolour painting:
Introduction to Tools and Materials: Familiarize yourself with the necessary tools and materials required for watercolour painting, and learn how to set up your painting area for optimal creativity.

- Palette Setup: Discover effective methods for setting up your palette and organizing your colors.
- Activating and Mixing Paint: Explore the fascinating world of color mixing, and learn how to activate and blend watercolor pigments on your palette.
- Understanding Values: Delve into the concept of values in watercolour painting, and master the creation of light, medium, and dark tones.
