Introducing artists in our winter residence program Jassem Hindi and Sina Seifee.

Sina Seifee (b.Tehran) lives and works in Brussels. Structured around a research-intensive and transversal exploration of performative storytelling and image-making, Seifee’s artistic practice looks at how epistemologies and knowledges get shaped. His work has been recognized for its commitment to social dimensions of imagination in the intersection of techno-media and globalism, with emphasis on the heritage of zoology in West Asia. He has been presenting internationally in City Gallery, Prague (2022); WIELS, Brussels (2020); SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin (2016); Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE (2018); Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2017); Temporary Gallery, Köln (2019); Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen (2019); and Akademie der Künste der Welt, Köln (2015).

Jassem el Hindi (b. Saudi Arabia) is French\Palestinian artist and performer based in Norway. He examines the double bind of haunting / hospitality. His work is based on broken dances, broken objects, broken texts, cast in nervousness and necessity. His latest pieces make use of "death poems" - by Etel Adnan, El Malaika, Aase Berg, CA Conrad - in order to generate baroque, cruel, cosmological worlds. Aside from his solo work, el Hindi also creates sound pieces for numerous choreographers around the world. Latest collaborators: Sina Seifee, Aase Berg, Mia Habib, Harald Beharie, Ligia Lewis, Charlott Utzig, Paolo Gile, Keith Hennessy, Clara Furey.

Tomorrow morning, Thursday 9.30am we and CoFutures from UiO invite you to join us for a public presentation of "Speculative Storytelling as Transformative Practice Reimagining Narratives of Displacement" organised with UN and Parsons School of Design who are currently exploring how storytelling and speculative fabulation can act as world-building practices.

Participants:
Lauren Parater is a Creative Strategist at United Nations Global Pulse, supporting the UN Secretariat’s innovation and strategic foresight portfolio. Previously, she led strategic communication and storytelling initiatives at the UN Refugee Agency’s Innovation Service. Her current professional and personal explorations focus on the intersections of design, narrative change, world-building and social justice.

Cian McAlone is Assistant Innovation Officer at the UN Refugee Agency, supporting the Innovation Service’s Strategic Communications and Design portfolio. He is interested in the role of communication, narrative, and organizational strategy in serving the political, social and economic concerns of people forced to flee.

Shanice Da Costa is an artist and training environmental scientist. Having South Asian heritage and living as an immigrant in both UAE and Germany, she has a deep appreciation for multicultural belonging (and multicultural cuisine). Professionally, she has an interest in intersectional climate justice and ecological art, and how the two are being ad- dressed in climate change communication.

Jane Pirone is an Associate Professor of Design Ecologies at Parsons School of Design where they served as Dean of the School of Design Strategies from 2015-2019 and as Director of the Communication Design program from 2006-2011. Jane’s creative and transdisciplinary practice engages with living systems, storytelling, participatory futures, and new technologies from critical, q***r and post-human perspectives.
Barbara Adams is a sociologist whose interdisciplinary research looks at how knowledge is produced and po- litical action is initiated through art and design projects. Barbara co-edited the book Design as Future-Making and is co-editor in chief of the journal Design and Culture. She is Assistant Professor of Design and Social Justice at Par- sons School of Design and was previously a postdoctoral fellow at Wesleyan University.

Hala Abdel Malak is design critic, curator, educator, researcher and strategist. Born in Beirut during the civil war, she grew up, worked, and studied internationally, in Lebanon, USA, Canada, UAE, Holland, UK, Morocco and France before grounding in New York. Hala’s multicultural background is reflected in her versatile transdisciplinary approach she explores work around global dynamics, power, organization, leadership and societal impact. Her interests span from re-imagining and challenging learning, knowledge production and creative education to include diverse, non-colonial and indigenous perspectives and traditional ecological knowledge, the exploration of global cultural and societal dissonance and flow, the resonance around migration and forced displacement and the triggers and contexts for resistance, advocacy and revolt. She is an Assistant Professor of Strategic Design and Management and Director of the Strategic Design and Management BBA at Parsons School of Design.

PODIUM is an Oslo based artist-run space with a history dating back to 2004. In 2015, the current team took over and reestablished the space. Our curated programme mainly consists of solo presentations by emerging artists based in Norway, interspersed by some group-shows and a series of discursive events: talks, round tables and reading groups. The selection of artists is based on their daring to create spearheading contexts that aim to challenge the potential audiences to rethink their views on society, aesthetics and art. The exhibitions are intertwined in their content with Heresies, a series of talks on pressing issues of today. The curatorial method is based on creating environments for various interactions: such as long-term conversations with actors involved with the space, sharing time, thoughts, efforts and food. This has lead PODIUM to become a space for concordant alignments, friendships and factions.

During these years, through reflections, talks and practice we have developed a particular workflow at PODIUM with a series of questions, recurring in our discussions. What kind of art institutions do our times require? What kind of aesthetic and political agenda and ethics are we promoting with our work? Which strategies should be employed? How to respond to the regional particularities? And what is lacking in Oslo’s cultural fabric? Is there a space for redefining an involved method and exhibition making, lifting weight off artists’ shoulders and mount better mediation towards a potential public?

We have developed a common vision through working shoulder by shoulder, by being responsive to the aspirations and wishes of the artist community and being attentive toward global intellectual thought. We understood that we are defined by being a team of artists sharing the common belief that there should be a platform for reflections around the challenges of our time, both in terms of cultural production and being members of society. This belief is that art is not solely about satisfying eyes or self-enclosure, but also entails opening to the outer world, taking a stance and devote time to confront the pressing issues and injustices of today, to reflect upon and unmask the conditions which cause them, to provoke thought, both through intellect and senses. The current team at PODIUM is Ragnhild Aamås, Ayatgali Tuleubek and Ignas Krunglevičius

Podium is currently receiving funding from The Norwegian Art Council (Kulturrådet).
